10 New Year’s Resolutions from the Wisest Man that Ever Lived!
New year’s resolutions-who has one? Who will share theirs?
New year’s resolutions usually fit into 1 of 3 categories. They deal with:
1. Things to make us look better or live longer
2. Things to make us have more; wealth, etc.
3. Things that will help us to get along with others.
If we were to translate these 3 into biblical terms we would call them:
1. Longevity
2. Prosperity
3. Peace.
So if we are making a New Year’s resolution what should we base it on? How are we going to fulfill it?
God’s Word has a whole book of wisdom and good advice: there are 31 chapters in the book of Proverbs. My challenge to you is to read a chapter of the book of Proverbs each day in the month of January.
This morning I want us to look at some writings of Solomon, the son of David, King of Israel-known as the Wisest man who ever lived, some even call him the richest man who ever lived, now he was a wealthy man but he had more than money, he had wisdom, which if used correctly is better than all the money in the world.
Solomon prayed for wisdom not money.
Proverbs 3:1-35 (NIV) 1 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,
2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity.
This is true for the entire Bible, if we remember God’s teaching, keep His commands and follow them then we can truly prosper.
3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
1. Let love and faithfulness never leave you.
Love & faithfulness are 2 qualities that we all need to have in our lives!
If we don’t have love we do not have anything! And if we don’t have faith then we can never experience true love! We will never realize how much our savior loves us.
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
2. Trust in the Lord with all your heart…In all ways acknowledge Him…
Def. of trust- relying without fear!
Def. of acknowledge- declare to be true, to know something is true
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. 8 This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
3. Do not be wise in your own eyes.
We always think we have it all figured out, we don’t need anyone’s help.
9 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; 10 then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
4. Honor God with your wealth.
11 My son, do not despise the LORD
