MATTERS of GREATEST SIGNIFICANCE
Significant Concerns of Jesus
As Jesus hung on the cross, He voiced particularly important concerns.
At the juncture of life & death, matters of greatest significance become our greatest concern.
At the juncture of life & death, matters of greatest significance are prioritized.
What matters are of greatest significance as evidenced from the Cross?
What are significant concerns of Jesus?
6 matters are of greatest significance as evidenced from the Cross.
6 Significant Concerns of Jesus.
3 Significant Concerns of Jesus are...
1. One’s FORGIVENESS(Lk. 23:34)
2. One’s DESTINY/FUTURE(Lk. 23:43)
3. One’s CARE(Jn. 19:26-27)
4— A Significant Concern of Jesus is...
One’s SEPARATION(Mat. 27:46; Mk. 15:34)
Explanation:(Mat. 27:46; Mk. 15:34)Separation
Mat. 27:45—“Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
“Eli, Eli”—Hebrew—“My God, My God.”
Mk. 15:33-34—“Now when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
“Eloi, Eloi”—Aramaic—“My God, My God.”
Jesus quotes from & calls us to examine Psalm 22:1 & possibly Psalm 22:1-31. A call from David for deliverance from his enemies, yet it is also a Messianic prophecy emitted roughly 1000yrs.(~1010-970 BC) before Messiah’s arrival.
Every good Jew knows that Elijah must come before Messiah.
Mal. 4:5-6—“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great & dreadful day of the LORD. And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come & strike the earth with a curse.””
Jesus’ cry could very easily be misunderstood as a cry to Elijah.
Mat. 27:47-49—Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, “This Man is calling for Elijah!” Immediately one of them ran & took a sponge, filled it with sour wine & put it on a reed, & offered it to Him to drink. The rest said, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.”
Mk. 15:35-36— Some of those who stood by, when they heard that, said, “Look, He is calling for Elijah!” Then someone ran & filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, & offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.”
Unfortunately many did & do not recognize John the Baptist as Elijah.
Mat. 11:11-15—““Assuredly, I say to you, among those born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. “And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, & the violent take it by force. “For all the prophets & the law prophesied until John. “And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah who is to come. “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”
Mat. 17:10-13—“And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” Jesus answered & said to them, “Indeed, Elijah is coming first & will restore all things. But I say to you that Elijah has come already, & they did not know him but did to him whatever they wished. Likewise the Son of Man is also about to suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them of John the Baptist.”
Lk. 1:16-17—““And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. He will also go before Him in the spirit & power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ & the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.””
Jesus’ trust of His Heavenly Father was so intense that He sensed the abandonment as He was being judged for the sin of mankind. He experienced a separation which He had never known/experienced before or after. A personal darkness from being alone & condemned.
Rom. 8:2-3—“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh,”
*Jesus did this so you would never experience it, & that you by voluntarily receiving the relationship with God, would always be unnerved at the Separation which sinful flesh affords!
Amos 8:4-12—“Hear this, you who swallow up the needy, And make the poor of the land fail, Saying: “When will the New Moon be past, That we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, That we may trade wheat? Making the ephah small & the shekel large, Falsifying the scales by deceit, That we may buy the poor for silver, And the needy for a pair of sandals-- Even sell the bad wheat?” The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: “Surely I will never forget any of their works. Shall the land not tremble for this, And everyone mourn who dwells in it? All of it shall swell like the River, Heave & subside Like the River of Egypt. “And it shall come to pass in that day,” says the Lord GOD, “That I will make the sun go down at noon, And I will darken the earth in broad daylight; I will turn your feasts into mourning, And all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on every waist, And baldness on every head; I will make it like mourning for an only son, And its end like a bitter day. “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord GOD, “That I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine of bread, Nor a thirst for water, But of hearing the words of the LORD. They shall wander from sea to sea, And from north to east; They shall run to & fro, seeking the word of the LORD, But shall not find it.”
Argumentation:
Isa 53:4-6, 10-12—“Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”....“Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities. Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors.”
Rom. 3:21-26—“But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law & the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all & on all who believe. For there is no difference; for all have sinned & fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just & the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”
Rom. 8:35-39—“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?.....For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
God does not want you to be separated from Him in the slightest degree. He has provided in Christ’s moment of separation on the Cross, all that anyone needs, of any generation, to have God’s will fulfilled.

5— A Significant Concern of Jesus is...
One’s PREPARATION(Jn. 19:28)
Explanation:(Jn. 19:28)Impartation
Jn. 19:28—“After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”
Jesus was not concerned with His own physical well-being but with His spiritual well-being & the spiritual well-being of mankind in general. Therefore, He needed to slake his thirst in order to accomplish this His final & grandest act of Divine intervention.
:29—“Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; & they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, & put it to His mouth.
Did they give Him drink out of love, pity or mockery? Either way, Jesus is prepared to finalize His ministry on earth.
Argumentation:
Jn. 4:34—“Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, & to finish His work.”
Jn. 17:1-4—“Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, & said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You, “as You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, & Jesus Christ whom You have sent. “I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do.”
Mat. 10:5-8, 11:1—“These twelve[disciples] Jesus sent out & commanded them, saying: “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, & do not enter a city of the Samaritans. But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons. Freely you have received, freely give.”.....“Now it came to pass, when Jesus finished commanding His twelve disciples, that He departed from there to teach & to preach in their cities.”
Lk. 10:1-3—“After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, & sent them two by two before His face into every city & place where He Himself was about to go. Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. “Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves.”
Our Sunday School teaching is important.
As a teacher or student, have you neglected or gotten lax in its Preparation?
Preparation may require different things for different needs.

6— A Significant Concern of Jesus is...
One’s COMPLETION (Mat. 27:50; Mk. 15:36; Lk. 23:44; Jn. 19:30)
Explanation:(Mat. 27:50; Mk. 15:36; Lk. 23:44; Jn. 19:30)Finish/End/Finality
Mat. 27:50—“And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, & yielded up his spirit.”
Mk. 15:36-37—“Then someone ran & filled a sponge full of sour wine, put it on a reed, & offered it to Him to drink, saying, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to take Him down.” 37 And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, & breathed His last.
Jn. 10:18—““No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, & I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father.””
Lk. 23:44—“Now it was about the sixth hour, & there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. 45 Then the sun was darkened, & the veil of the temple was torn in two. 46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.’ ” Having said this, He breathed his last.
*Jn. 19:30—“So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
What is “it”?—Every aspect of the entire reason for Jesus’ coming to this earth...the reason for God’s visitation has been accomplished in the life of Christ! Sin has been dealt with once for all, decisively. Propitiation for sin has been permanently met!
Jesus has Taken on human flesh, Humbled Himself, Remained sinless, Given God the glory, Revealed His Father’s will, Overcome the devil, Saved the elect, Secured the Christian’s future, Gifted the faithful, Empowered the called, Enabled the weak, Encouraged the faint of heart, etc.
“Finished”—telew—1) To bring to a close, to finish, to end; 2) To perform, execute, complete, fulfil, (so that the thing done corresponds to what has been said, the order, command etc.); 3) To pay.
Argumentation:
Isa 53:10-12—“Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. He shall see the labor of His soul, & be satisfied.
Rom. 10:4—“For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.”
Col. 2:13-15—“And you, being dead in your trespasses & the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities & powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”
Notice the Aorist tenses—These actions have taken place once with their effects lasting for all time.
*2Tim. 3:16-17—“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, & is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
1Tim. 6:6-11—“Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, & it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food & clothing, with these we shall be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation & a snare, & into many foolish & harmful lusts which drown men in destruction & perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, & pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But you, O man of God, flee these things & pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.”
2Tim. 2:19-21—“Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” &, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold & silver, but also of wood & clay, some for honor & some for dishonor. Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified & useful for the Master, prepared for every good work.”
2Cor. 9:8—“And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.”
Eph. 2:10—“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”
Eph 3:14-21—“For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven & earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted & grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width & length & depth & height-- to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever & ever. Amen.”
Eph. 4:11-16—“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, & some pastors & teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith & of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to & fro & carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head--Christ-- from whom the whole body, joined & knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.”
Are you complete in your service to God by faith in Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit?
