WHEN SIN ENTERED IN-VI—Genesis 3:1-24

Need:

Why are things the way they are? Why does it seem that my life is an uphill battle? Why is my marriage so strained? Why is my spouse so difficult to live with? Why do we argue all the time?

Genesis chapter 3 precisely documented the original appearance of sin.

The original appearance of sin is precisely documented in God’s word.

*What is significant about the entrance of sin?

*How is the entrance of sin to be regarded or how is it significant?

23 considerations regarding the entrance of sin.

Earlier in Genesis 3 we found that Sin entered in with ...

1. CUNNING(:1a)

2. IMPLICATION(:1b)

3. Self-PROTECTION(:2-3)

4. BLATANT UNDERSTATEMENT

5. BLATANT OVERSTATEMENT(:5)

6. RATIONALISM(:6)

7. KNOWLEDGE (:7a)

8. COVER UP(:7b)

9. FEAR(:8)

10. PARENTAL CONCERN(:9)

11. LIMITED CONFESSION(:10)

12. BLAME(:11-12)

13. ADMISSION (:13)

Curse upon Satan:

14. Satan’s HUMILIATION(:14)

15. CLASS HATRED(:15a-c)

16. Satan’s DEFEAT(:15d-e)

Curse upon the Woman:

17. MONUMENTAL PAIN (:16a-b)

18. MARITAL COMPETITION(:16c-d)

Today we will look at the Curse upon the Man:

WEAK CHOICE for AUTHORITY(:17a)

Explanation: (:17a)Weakness for the woman/Choice

:17—“Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, & have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’:....”

Now God brings the result of his sin upon his world. This is because the man entered into sin because he “heeded the voice of his wife,” rather than the voice of God.

“Ground”—hmda ad-aw-maw’—1) Ground, land. Strong—Soil (from its general redness):-- Country, earth, ground, husband[-man] (-ry), land.

“Toil”(See :16—“Sorrow”)—Nwbue its-tsaw-bone’—1) Pain, labour, hardship, sorrow, toil. Strong—Worrisomeness, i.e. Labor or pain:-- Sorrow, toil. Used 3X.

Argumentation:

1Cor. 7:27-35—“Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be loosed. Are you loosed from a wife? Do not seek a wife. But even if you do marry, you have not sinned; & if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. Nevertheless such will have trouble in the flesh, but I would spare you. But this I say, brethren, the time is short, so that from now on even those who have wives should be as though they had none, those who weep as though they did not weep, those who rejoice as though they did not rejoice, those who buy as though they did not possess, & those who use this world as not misusing it. For the form of this world is passing away. But I want you to be without care. He who is unmarried cares for the things of the Lord--how he may please the Lord. But he who is married cares about the things of the world--how he may please his wife. There is a difference between a wife & a virgin. The unmarried woman cares about the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body & in spirit. But she who is married cares about the things of the world--how she may please her husband. And this I say for your own profit, not that I may put a leash on you, but for what is proper, & that you may serve the Lord without distraction.”

1Pet. 3:1-7—“Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives, when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear. Do not let your adornment be merely outward--arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel-- rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle & quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose daughters you are if you do good & are not afraid with any terror. Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, & as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.”

Wives are physically weaker vessels & in some respects emotionally weaker—but they are not morally, spiritually or intellectually weaker.

Wives seeking/scrapping for headship of the household, incite their husbands to maintain the God-ordained place of that headship. In our doing so we must not bow to emotionally driven decisions/We must operate on fact according to God’s revelation, to His truth!

Any action entered into by authority other than God’s is foolish at best!

Today we are bad to trust the internet for our information/However we may not know the author....their credentials, their trustworthiness, their reliability with truth/And we pass the formation on like its reality/Much of the internet is popular opinion only with no basis in truth.

Today trusting National Geographic or History Channel for truth regarding spiritual matters is slipshod, careless & negligent at best/WEAK(choice for) AUTHORITY

If you look at legitimate reference books, you will discover the author’s priority or dishonesty with the truth by looking at the bibliography & footnotes & the publisher/WEAK (choice for) AUTHORITY

If Adam had seriously considered for a moment, the origin of Eve’s temptation—that it was not from & contradicted God’s revealed word—then surely he would NOT have partaken of the fruit!

TOILSOME PROVISION (:17b-19)

Explanation:(:17b-19)Laborious rather than gracious

:17—“Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, & have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’: “Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life.”

God designed a woman to experience her greatest fulfillment & influence in her relationship to her husband & as the major participant/complement/contributor toward nurturing their/her children. That is her major realm/sphere of operation. It is tied directly to her relationship with the man. Thus God places a unique curse on that realm so that she is continually reminded of the cost of her sin.

Likewise, the penalty for the man’s sin effected his major realm of operation/relationship as well. His place was the field(agrarian) or his work place(industrial). He would now be subject to the very dust from which he was made in his working it.

Logically then, the man would now be, repetitively, thruout his life, daily yet temporarily be separated from the direct influence of home with wife & children. This is because he would be daily(physically) bound to the field for which his “toil” would be exacted & necessary to draw out its fruit. He would also be nightly(mentally) bound as well in his concern for it would consume his thoughts.

Thus the very ground which the man was purposed to “tend & keep,”(2:15) is now “cursed” so that it is no longer a pleasant exercise but becomes a toilsome effort to maintain his sustenance.

The ground is cursed as a standing/continual lesson in...obedience to God’s perfection, authority, love, goodness, provision, righteousness, care, etc...in how good God is to us...in how our trust in Him should never waver.

Does “All the days” of Adam’s( “your”) life refer to his progeny as well?...

As far as Adam knew, he would live forever—which was a definite possibility judging from the couple’s banishment(:22-24) from the Tree of Life. This of course was not just specific to the man alone.

Provision would no longer be idyllic nor come easily(1:29; 2:16). It would, from this point on, be toilsome. He would no longer “tend & keep” a perfect garden(2:15). He would now have to work hard to produce even a poor semblance of that perfect garden & idyllic existence.

“Cursed”—rra aw-rar’—To curse. Strong—To execrate:-- X Bitterly curse.

“Ground”—hmda ad-aw-maw’—1) Ground, land. Strong—Soil (from its general redness):-- Country, earth, ground, husband[-man] (-ry), land.

“For your sake/Because of you”—rwbe aw-boor’—1) For the sake of, on account of, because of, in order to. Strong—properly, Crossed, i.e. (abstractly) Transit; used only adverbially, On account of, in order that:-- Because of, for (...’s sake), (intent) that, to.

“Toil”(See :16—“Sorrow”)—Nwbue its-tsaw-bone’—1) Pain, labour, hardship, sorrow, toil. Strong—Worrisomeness, i.e. Labor or pain:-- Sorrow, toil. Used 3X.

:18—“Both thorns & thistles it shall bring forth for you, And you shall eat the herb of the field.”

The effect of the curse upon the ground, is that it will yield “both thorns & thistles” or weeds. These will be battled constantly because the man is destined to “eat the herb of the field.”

This curse will be present everywhere outside of the Garden in Eden & the man, Adam will be expelled into that cursed land—:23-24.

At this point Adam knows nothing of laborious toil in regard to his tending the garden of God. He knows only the pleasure of harmony in all things. The entrance of sin has destroyed such harmony in all things which eventually & ultimately must effect Adam.

Adam will battle weeds(much like sin) in their constant & incessant attempt to take over/control his livelihood. In fact, both thorns & thistles, though passively, will physically hurt & hinder Adam’s attempts at sustenance for he, his wife, & children.

“Thorns”—Uwq qowts—Thorn, thornbush

“Thistles”—rdrd dar-dar’—Thistles, thorns.

“Bring forth”—xmu tsaw-makh’—1) To sprout, spring up, grow up.

“Herb”—bse eh’seb—1) Herb, herbage, grass, green plants.

:19—“In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread Till you return to the ground, For out of it you were taken; For dust you are, And to dust you shall return.””

Man’s lot is to have his “bread” but only by “the sweat of his face.” He will maintain this hard labor until he returns to the ground in death. This is because he was formed of the dust of the ground, he literally is dust, & thus he is destined to return to it.

Today we have become so acclimatized to this unintended role that we think there is no other way....no other possibility...no other means. Man is so attuned to provision by his own hands & sweat

“Sweat”—hez zay-aw’—Perspiration, sweat. Used 1X.

“Bread”—Mxl lekh’-em—1) Bread, food, grain. Strong—Food (for man or beast), especially bread, or grain (for making it):-- ([shew-])bread, X eat, food, fruit, loaf, meat, victuals. Where we get—Mxl tyb Beyth Lechem—‘House of Bread.’

“Dust”—rpe aw-fawr’—1) Dry earth, dust, powder, ashes, earth, ground, mortar, rubbish.

Before Sin:

Gen. 1:29; 2:8-9; 2:15-16—“And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, & every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.”....“The LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden, & there He put the man whom He had formed. And out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight & good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, & the tree of the knowledge of good & evil.”....“Then the LORD God took the man & put him in the garden of Eden to tend & keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;””

Afterward—Consider our unfounded complaint of hardship:

Adam died after living on this earth 930yrs.(Gen. 5:5). 930 yrs. toiling to provide & that after having experienced the fruitful abundance of God’s garden in Eden! And we have the nerve to want to retire when? 62...55...45? Oh please!

*Earlier generations, as do many even today, spent most of their time & most of their resources on food alone. “Compare that with the United States. Under six percent of total consumer expenditures in the United States are for food... We have 94 percent of our money going somewhere other than to feed us.”—John MacArthur

Much of this tremendous wealth has come at the hands of Christianity.

Argumentation:

Eccl. 9:9-10—“Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of your vain life which He has given you under the sun, all your days of vanity; for that is your portion in life, & in the labor which you perform under the sun. Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.”

1Tim. 5:3-8—“Honor widows who are really widows. But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety at home & to repay their parents; for this is good & acceptable before God. Now she who is really a widow, & left alone, trusts in God & continues in supplications & prayers night & day. But she who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives. And these things command, that they may be blameless. But if anyone does not provide for his own, & especially for those of his household, he has denied the faith & is worse than an unbeliever.”

2Cor. 12:14-15—“Now for the third time I am ready to come to you. And I will not be burdensome to you; for I do not seek yours, but you. For the children ought not to lay up for the parents, but the parents for the children. And I will very gladly spend & be spent for your souls; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I am loved.”

Our work, men, should be to provide 1st & foremost for the present & future of our own children....& in like manner, for the well-being of others.

Benefit of work:

Isa 58:6-11—““Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh? Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, & the LORD will answer; You shall cry, & He will say, ‘Here I am.’ “If you take away the yoke from your midst, The pointing of the finger, & speaking wickedness, If you extend your soul to the hungry And satisfy the afflicted soul, Then your light shall dawn in the darkness, And your darkness shall be as the noonday. The LORD will guide you continually, And satisfy your soul in drought, And strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.”

Our work should help others. If our job/career/profession/work does not it is selfishly independent from God.

Col 3:23-24—“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord & not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.”

Eph. 6:5-8—“Bondservants, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear & trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ; not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, & not to men, knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free.”

1Pet. 2:15-16—“For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men-- as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God.”

Application:

“And so through salvation the curse is mitigated as it was in the case of the woman who now has a relationship to her husband who is like that of Christ in the church, & relationship to her children which is one of godliness & one in which she’s producing righteous children. And all of a sudden what was a point of pain becomes a point of joy.

And for the man, the mundane routine life-long struggle of work becomes for him a realm of witness, the realm of worship & the realm of reward.”—John MacArthur
