Many debates have occurred over this teaching among our Christian brethren. We find

in the scripture the Holy Spirit works in many different ways in the world and in the lives

of born again believer’s. Baptism in the Holy Ghost is viewed as a distinctive Christian

experience separate from salvation. The promise of the baptism with the Holy Ghost

extends from the appearance of the forerunner, John the Baptist, to the ascension of

Jesus. Therefore, the disciples of the Lord were born again believer’s, sanctified through

the blood of Jesus through the cross; but had not yet received the Holy Ghost. For the

Pentecostal the Holy Ghost baptism is based upon the scripture reference found in Acts

2:1-4 and confirmed by the descending of the dove upon Christ at his baptism John 1:33

and in Mark 1:8.

HOLY GHOST BAPTISM

TEXT: Acts 2.1-4

INTRODUCTION: Many people see the Holy Ghost as and influence or energy, and not a person.

“Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.” (John 14:17)

IT IS PROMISED TO US

1. The Old Testament prophesies:

“And I will put my spirit within you . . .” (Ezekiel 36:27)

“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.” (Joel 2:28, 29)

“For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring.” (Isaiah 44:3)

“Until the spirit be poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness be a fruitful field, and the fruitful field be counted for a forest.” (Isaiah 32:15)

2. The words of John the Baptist in the Gospels declare,

"I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire.” (Matthew 3:11)

“I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.” (Mark 1:8)

“And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.” (John 1:33)

3. Jesus promises the Spirit,

“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.” (John 14:16)

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.” (John 14:26)

“. . . It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.” (John 16:7)

4. Jesus proclaims in Acts,

“For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.” (Acts 1:5)

“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

5. The Apostles continue preaching the promise.

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.” (Acts 2:38, 39)

“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.” (Ephesians 5:18)

BE PREPARED TO RECEIVE

1. We must want to receive.

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” (Matthew 5:6)

“In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.” (John 7:37)

2. Hear the Word.

“While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.” (Acts 10:44)

“And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.” (Acts 11:15)

3. Tarry in the presence of God.

“And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” (Luke 24:49)

4. Pray for the infilling.

“And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.” (Acts 4:31)

“If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” (Luke 11:13)

5. Get in one accords with those around you and with God.

“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.” (Acts 2.1)

“These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.” (Acts 1:14)

6. The laying on of hands.

“Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.” (Acts 8:17)

“And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.” (Acts 19:6)

7. Receive the fullness.

“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:4)

Speaking in tongues is the initial, outward, physical evidence the Holy Ghost baptism.

CONCLUSION:

“How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” (Acts 10:38)

“And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.” (Luke 4:1) Notice to Sermon Central Users:
