WHEN SIN ENTERED IN-III—Genesis 3:1-24

Attention:

“Sin is any personal lack of conformity to the moral character of God, or the law of God. Then sin is a disposition of the heart, it is a bent.”....“It is...any violation of the character or law of God, the moral character or the law of God.”.... “it’s ignoring God’s law, it’s violating God’s law.”

Rom. 14:23 tells us that “...whatever is not from faith is sin.” so that anything that you do that is not a direct act of faith in God is sin.”

“You study the Bible & you’re going to find out what God commands us to do & not to do, you’re going to find out the essential elements of God’s nature. And whenever we violate those, we sin.”.... “....there is no external cause of sin....It’s just choice.”— John MacArthur & that choice is afforded us & allowed by freewill.

Genesis 3 explains the human dilemma, the seemingly endless frustrations we face thruout our lives.

“All the problems of the universe have their origin in the events of this historic account. I’ll say that again, all the problems in the universe, physical problems, spiritual problems, moral problems, social problems, economic problems, political problems, all the problems in the universe have their origin in the events of this historic account.”—John MacArthur

Genesis chapter 3 precisely documented the original appearance of sin.

The original appearance of sin is precisely documented in God’s word.

Sin’s DISCOVERY(EXPOSURE)

PARENTAL CONCERN(:9)

Explanation:(:9)

:9—“Then the LORD God called to Adam & said to him, “Where are you?””

YaHoVeH God calls directly to Adam(the man) rather than to both the man & the woman. Thus Adam is the point-man as it were.

God seeks for Adam to reveal his location. It is not as though God does not know their whereabouts. God is expressing the informed concern of parental care. The question is awakening Adam to the fact that His heavenly Father knows something(everything actually) is amiss & wants Adam to recognize it, man up, give it up & own it. Adam is given ample opportunity to approach God on his own rather than forcing the meeting Adam must dread.

“Called”—arq kaw-raw’—Verb Qal Waw Consecutive third masculine singular—1) To call, call out, recite, read, cry out, proclaim1a) (Qal)—1a1) To call, cry, utter a loud sound, 1a2) To call unto, cry (for help), call(with name of God), 1a3) To proclaim, 1a4) To read aloud, read (to oneself), read, 1a5) To summon, invite, call for, call & commission, appoint, call & endow, 1a6) To call, name, give name to, call by.

Argumentation:

Ex. 20:12—(5th Commandment)—“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.”

Prov. 4:1-6—“Hear, my children, the instruction of a father, And give attention to know understanding; For I give you good doctrine: Do not forsake my law. When I was my father’s son, Tender & the only one in the sight of my mother, He also taught me, & said to me: “Let your heart retain my words; Keep my commands, & live. Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, & she will preserve you; Love her, & she will keep you.”

DIRECTION & CORRECTION:

Prov. 29:15-17—“The rod & rebuke give wisdom, But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother. When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increases; But the righteous will see their fall. Correct your son, & he will give you rest; Yes, he will give delight to your soul.”

Eph. 6:4—“And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training & admonition of the Lord.”

Col. 3:21—“Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.”

Heb. 12:6-11—“For whom the LORD loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives. If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate & not sons. Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, & we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits & live? For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.”

LOVE:

2Thes. 2:16-17—“Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work.”

1Jn. 2:15-17—“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”

Rom. 5:8—“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

1Jn. 3:1—“Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!....”

1Jn. 4:9-10—“In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

Paul’s PARENTAL CONCERN extended to the churches—because they are filled with the children of God!

2Cor. 11:28-29—“besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: my deep concern for all the churches. Who is weak, & I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, & I do not burn with indignation?”

LIMITED CONFESSION(:10)

Explanation:(:10)

:10—“So he said, “I heard Your voice in the garden, & I was afraid because I was naked; & I hid myself.””

There seems to be no immediate fear on Adam’s part of his having eaten of the forbidden fruit. Perhaps he believes that such action can be more easily be hidden or is less obvious than his nakedness. He does not yet realize that the ‘shame of his nakedness’ is a direct result of his disobedience/sin.

Adam’s concern is that he is naked & he did not want God to see him in such a state. He was ashamed. Thus “fear” came over him & he sought to alleviate that emotion by hiding.

Adam does not initially bring blame upon Eve as he does in verse :12. He answers only for himself before God as he( “God called to Adam”) is the one YaHoVeH God seeks.

Remember the parable of the prodigal son? He approached his father on his own, when his heart was right. The prodigal’s confession came about without his father’s approaching him. He came to the end of himself & out of desperation, returned to his father humbled. Adam wasn’t humbled until YaHoVeH God called him out personally.

When our confession is limited/partial we are 1)Convinced that we are hiding something from God...the same God who is omniscient! Or more importantly, we are 2)so Oblivious & Insensitive to personal sin that we focus on only one aspect or occurrence of it, while retaining other sin. We thus compartmentalize our sinfulness by nourishing certain ones. This brings about a Limited Confession.

“Voice”(See :8—“Sound”)—lwq qowl—1) Voice, sound, noise—1a) Voice, 1b) Sound (of instrument); 2) Lightness, frivolity. Strong—from an unused root meaning to call aloud; A voice or sound:-- + aloud, bleating, crackling, cry (+ out), fame, lightness, lowing, noise, + hold peace, [pro-]claim, proclamation, + sing, sound, + spark, thunder(-ing), voice, + yell.

“Afraid”—ary yaw-ray’—1) To fear, revere, be afraid.

“Hid”(See :8)—abx khaw-baw’—1) To withdraw, hide.

Argumentation:

As long as we have something to hide, we will not produce a full confession & are not being fully honest with God or ourselves.

This is not the same as exercising discretion about how, when, where, & with whom we confess. Adam had no reason to hide from His heavenly Father, because his Father is perfect in love, perfect in understanding, & perfect in judgment, justice & consequence.

Ex. 20:16—“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”

A “false witness” is, minimally, a limited confession. Maximally an outright lie with no shade of truth.

BLAME(:11-12)

Explanation:(:11-12) Accuser

:11—“And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?””

God then plies Adam as to the reason behind the discovery of his own nakedness. The man’s nakedness should be of no consequence to him. In the question is the implication that someone told the man he was naked.

God then pointedly asks the man if he had eaten of the fruit which He had specifically prohibited. Unknown to the man, his concern about his nakedness is a result of his first sin of compliance. God has flushed out the truth for the man’s own admission.

:12—“Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, & I ate.””

Upon finding that God knows of his sin, the man then blames not only his wife but God as well! True, the woman gave the fruit to her husband & true, God did make the woman for the man. But neither of them can rightly be blamed for the man’s decision for it is his alone. Though the woman offered him the fruit, he had a choice & made it based on flesh rather than obedience to God.

It seems everyone, in the man’s opinion, “gave” him something he didn’t ask or had need for. A perfect scenario for blame.

God in particular cannot rightly receive blame for forming the woman & giving her to the man. God did it solely for the well-being of the man. God is love & everything He brings about is born of love. He made the woman out of love for the man as it would not have been “good that man should be alone.”(Gen. 2:18ff.)

What Adam doesn’t realize is that he had earlier praised God for giving him “bone of my bones & flesh of my flesh” & that “she shall be called woman because she was taken out of man”(husband). Thus Adam is condemning himself as he & his wife are of the same make up.

Argumentation:

Rev. 12:9-11—“So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.”

“Devil”—diabolov—‘Accuser’—Prone to slander, slanderous, accusing falsely.

We put ourselves in the same category with the Devil/Satan when we cast blame on others. Blame is a poor & desperate attempt to remove responsibility from ourselves by damaging others.

Isa. 29:15-16—“Woe to those who seek deep to hide their counsel far from the LORD, And their works are in the dark; They say, “Who sees us?” and, “Who knows us?” Surely you have things turned around! Shall the potter be esteemed as the clay; For shall the thing made say of him who made it, “He did not make me”? Or shall the thing formed say of him who formed it, “He has no understanding”?”

Js. 1:13-15—“Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires & enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; & sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.”

Illustration:

“I love the story of the guy in New York city who... robbed a store & the store owner grabbed a gun & shot him & paralyzed him so that the lower part of [the robber’s] body...was paralyzed & he was then confined to a wheelchair. When the case came to trial, the attorney for the robber ... took the case on the basis that ... the man who committed the crime was a victim of society. That he was driven to [commit the] crime by his economic disadvantages.

The lawyer said he ... is a shooting victim of the insensitivity of the man who shot him. And ...because of that man’s callous disregard of the thief’s plight as a victim, the poor thief is going to be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. He deserves some compensation. And the jury agreed. And the store owner paid a huge settlement.

What always fascinates me when I think about [that] story is within two months, the man was arrested committing another armed robbery in his wheelchair.”—John MacArthur

ADMISSION (:13)

Explanation:(:13)

:13—“And the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, & I ate.””

The woman’s work(sin committed—what she had done) was eating the forbidden fruit, whereas God’s work(that He had done) was making all things good(1:31, 2:2).

The woman admitted that the serpent had purposely led her astray, that she had believed the lie & had thus chosen to eat. There does not seem to be any malice in Eve’s words.

Honesty with ourselves, others & God is key to a right relationship with God, others & ourselves!

“Done”—hse aw-saw’—1) To do, fashion, accomplish, make.

“Deceived”—avn naw-shaw’—Verb Hifil Perfect third masculine singular Suffix first common singular—1) To beguile, deceive—1b) (Hiphil) to beguile, deceive.

Argumentation:

Dan. 9:20-21—“Now while I was speaking, praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God, yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering.”

2Chron. 7:14—““if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

Js. 5:16—“Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”

Mat. 18:15-18—““Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ “And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector. Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

*1Jn. 1:8-10—“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.”
