MANAGING CHRISTIAN TRIALS-III—James 1:1-27
Attention:
A Shipping Clerk at a factory, discovered a box that was left on the loading dock with this warning printed on it: DANGER DO NOT TOUCH!
Management was called & all employees were told to stay clear of the box until it could be analyzed.
When the foreman arrived, he donned gloves & safety glasses, & then, very carefully opened the box. Inside were 25 signs that read: DANGER! DO NOT TOUCH!
Likewise, Christians are expected to effectively manage their difficulties.
James divulged the proper management of trials which were endemic/common to Christians.
There are proper ways of managing the those difficulties.
How are Christians to manage their trials properly?

TEMPTATION(:13-18)
Explanation:(:13-18)
:13—“Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone.”
Parallel: Rom. 9:18-24—“Therefore He has mercy on whom He wills, & whom He wills He hardens.[He brings about “mercy” &/or “hardening” by a person’s faith] You will say to me then, “Why does He still find fault? For who has resisted His will?” But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, “Why have you made me like this?” Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor & another for dishonor? What if God, wanting to show His wrath & to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, & that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had prepared beforehand for glory, even us whom He called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?”
In facing spiritual trials, the Christian must endure the temptation without directing blame toward God. When one falls into circumstances that challenge his physical & spiritual existence, one is further tempted to say that God is at fault for allowing or engineering the difficulty. & thus by association/default, that God Himself is somehow “tempted by evil” to act.
No one should ever reach the above conclusion for it glorifies human reasoning—denying the truth— & is thus blasphemous. This is because the fact remains that “God cannot be tempted by evil”. That is, an outward force of evil cannot “tempt” God to act.
We immediately are reminded of Job 1:6-12 & 2:1-6, where Satan(in sin) seemingly ‘tempts’ God...to act. However upon further examination, this is not true. It is a half-truth. Rather, God is confident of Job’s trust & declares it. God then acts within His perfect knowledge of Job’s faith, his situation & the many future blessings which will arise/blossom(Job’s as well as untold numbers of his experiencers & readers)because of it. However, God does not act out of temptation by Satan. He acts out of His knowledge of the strength of saving faith.
God gives Satan limited & restricted permission who then takes everything he can squeeze out of it regardless of life. Satan has no qualms about destruction. But faith overrides destruction.
Likewise we can respond to temptation properly within God’s desire.
Consequently, God does not “tempt anyone”.
Gen. 3:6, 12, 17—“So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, & a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit & ate. She also gave to her husband with her, & he ate.”....“Then the man said, “The woman whom You gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, & I ate.””....“Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, & have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’: “Cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it All the days of your life.”
“Tempted”(See :12)—peirazw v.—1)To try whether a thing can be done—1a)To attempt, endeavour; 2)To try, make trial of, test: for the purpose of ascertaining his quality, or what he thinks, or how he will behave himself—2a)In a good sense, 2b)In a bad sense, to test one maliciously, craftily to put to the proof his feelings or judgments, ...by enticement to sin...By impious or wicked conduct to test God's justice & patience, & to challenge him, as it were to give proof of his perfections.
“Cannot be tempted” (used here only)—apeirastov—That can not be tempted by evil, not liable to temptation to sin.
“Evil”—kakov—1)Of a bad nature—1a)Not such as it ought to be; 2)Of a mode of thinking, feeling, acting—2a)Base, wrong, wicked; 3) Troublesome, injurious, pernicious, destructive, baneful.
Kakov frequently means evil rather negatively, referring to the absence of the qualities which constitute a person or thing what it should be or what it claims to be. It is also used meaning evil in a moral sense. It is a general antithesis to agayov ‘good’. Kakov describes the quality(of evil) according to its nature.
:14—“But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires & enticed.”
Gen. 4:6-7—“So the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.””
Js. 4:2-3—“You lust & do not have. You murder & covet & cannot obtain. You fight & war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask & do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.”
Remember the door which is open to us with every temptation?
1Cor. 10:12-14—“Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.”
:15—“Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; & sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.”
“Desire/Lust” is compared to the progressive birth of a child & his subsequent growth to adulthood. Desire is “conceived” within us & it’s natural progression is to produce “sin”.
“Conceived”—sullambanw—1) To seize, take: one as prisoner; 2) To conceive, of a woman—2a) metaph. Of lust whose impulses a man indulges; 3) To seize for one's self—3a) In a hostile sense, To make (one a permanent) prisoner; 4) To take hold together with one, to assist, help, to succor. Strong—To clasp, i.e. Seize (arrest, capture); specifically, To conceive (literally or figuratively); by implication, To aid:-- Catch, conceive, help, take.
“Gives birth”—tiktw—To bring forth, bear, produce (fruit from the seed)—1a) Of a woman giving birth, 1b) Of the earth bringing forth its fruits, 1c) metaph. To bear, bring forth. Strong—To produce (from seed, as a mother, a plant, the earth, etc.), literally or figuratively:-- Bear, be born, bring forth, be delivered, be in travail.
“Sin”—amartia— Strong—A sin (properly abstract):-- offence, sin(-ful). From—amartanw—V.—properly, To miss the mark (& so not share in the prize), i.e. (figuratively) To err, especially (morally) To sin:-- for your faults, offend, sin, trespass. Thayer—Meant originally the missing of a mark. When applied to moral things the idea is similar, it is missing the true end of life, & so it is used as a general term for sin. It means both the act of sinning & the result, the sin itself.
“Full-grown/Finished”—apotelew—1) To perfect, to bring quite to an end; 2) Accomplish. Strong—To complete entirely, i.e. Consummate:-- finish.
“Brings forth”—apokuew—1) To bring forth—1a) From the womb, 1b) Give birth to; 2) Produce. Strong—To breed forth, i.e. (by transf.) To generate (figuratively):-- Beget, produce.
“Death”—yanatov—(properly, an adjective used as a noun) Death (literally or figuratively):-- X deadly, (be...) death.
:16—“Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.”

:17—“Every good gift & every perfect gift is from above, & comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.”
Deception can keep us from recognizing & honoring the very One who “prefectly” gifts us thru His grace.
“Good”—agayov—1) Of good constitution or nature; 2) Useful, salutary; 3) Good, pleasant, agreeable, joyful, happy; 4) Excellent, distinguished; 5) Upright, honorable.
“Perfect”—teleiov—1) Brought to its end, finished; 2) Wanting nothing necessary to completeness; 3) Perfect; 4) That which is perfect. Strong—Complete (in various applications of labor, growth, mental & moral character, etc.); neuter (as noun, with 3588) completeness:-- of full age, man, perfect. From—telov—properly, The point “Above”—anwyen—1) From above, from a higher place—1a) Of things which come from heaven or God; 2) From the first, from the beginning, from the very first; 3) Anew, over again.
“Father of lights”—
Our creator God, has wrought these “lights”—the Sun, Moon & Stars.
The “lights” change continuously as they are to “give light,” & “for signs, seasons,...days & years”(Gen. 1:14-15). Yet He Himself never changes.
“Lights”—fwv—N.-Gen. Pl. Neut.—Strong—Luminousness (in the widest application, nat. or artificial, abstract or concrete, literal or figurative):-- Fire, light. From an obsolete faw (to shine or make manifest, especially by rays.
“Variation”—parallagh—Variation, change. Used 1X. Strong—Transmutation (of phase or orbit), i.e. (figuratively) Fickleness:-- Variableness. Used 1X.
“Shadow”—aposkiasma—A shade cast by one object on another, a shadow.
“Turning”—troph—1) A turning—1a) of the heavenly bodies. Strong—From an apparently primary trepw (to turn); A turn ("trope"), i.e. revolution (figuratively, variation):-- Turning.
:18—“Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.”
Our heavenly Father birthed all Christians by His very word, which is thus “truth.” He did this so that those birthed would be to Him as “firstfruits” of all His living creation. As firstfruits, we are a prized & precious offering of the crown/pinnacle/focus/intent of His creation.
Therefore our very lives are to be an offering to the Father who brought us forth thru the second birth.

Lk. 17:1-4—“Then He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, & he were thrown into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones. Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him; & if he repents, forgive him. And if he sins against you seven times in a day, & seven times in a day returns to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.””

RESPONSE(:19-20)
Explanation:(:19-20) Retaliation
:19—“So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;”
Seeing that we are to live as God’s firstfruits:
In trying situations, We are to recall that we are “beloved” among the “brethren.” We have family, are loved, & have others who depend upon us.
As trials come upon us, we are to quickly give first place to or prioritize a listening ear. We are to do this rather than ‘flying off the handle’ as it were. Any given situation demands careful thought, so that our flesh will not rule it. It is always better to allow the Spirit His say.
As trials come upon us, we are to simultaneously carefully consider what we say. Our words can cause a world of hurt to others as well as ourselves. Once they are out, we can only recant them but cannot completely undo their damage.
Likewise, as with our speaking, & as God’s firstfruits, we are encouraged to refrain from enforcing our desire thru heated anger. The reason follows in the next verse.
“Swift”—tacuv—Quick, fleet, speedy. Strong—Fleet, i.e. (figuratively) Prompt or ready:--Swift. Used 1X. Where we get our Eng. word ‘Tachometer.’
“Hear”—akouw—1) To be endowed with the faculty of hearing, not deaf; 2) To hear—2b) To attend to, consider what is or has been said, 2c) To understand, perceive the sense of what is said; 3) To hear something. Strong—a primary verb; To hear (in various senses):-- Give (in the) audience (of), come (to the ears), ([shall]) hear(-er, -ken), be noised, be reported, understand.
“Slow”(2X)—braduv—1) Slow; 2) metaph. Dull, inactive, in mind—2a) Stupid, slow to apprehend or believe. Slow, tardy, having purely a temporal reference & no necessary bad sense.

:20— “for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.”
Anger wielded in the flesh is always misplaced & misinterpreted. Therefore it is incapable of bringing about God’s righteousness—that is that which is right in God’s eyes, which pleases Him & is His intention for us. No wonder Christians & Christianity can be disdained & scorned by those outside the Church.
When we allow our fleshly passions to overwhelm & override the leadership of the Holy Spirit, the desire of our flesh takes precedence, thus creating confusion minimally...& creating disillusionment, then hatred & persecution at its worst.
“Produce”—katergazomai—1) To perform, accomplish, achieve; 2) To work out i.e. to do that from which something results—2a) of things: bring about, result in; 3) To fashion i.e. render one fit for a thing. Strong—Do work fully, i.e. Accomplish; by implication, to Finish, fashion:-- Cause, to (deed), perform, work (out). From—ergazomai—To toil, commit, do, labor for, work.
“Righteousness”—dikaiosunh—1) in a broad sense: State of him who is as he ought to be, righteousness, the condition acceptable to God.

APPOINTMENT of the WORD(:21-25)
Explanation:(21-25)
:21—“Therefore lay aside all filthiness & overflow of wickedness, & receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.”
As a result of our approaching trials with joy, rather than fleshly wrath, Christians are to actively set/place—“filthiness” & any superiority held by “wickedness”—away from themselves. These things should not characterize the life of a Christian.
In contrast, the “word” of God, which has been planted within us by faith in Christ thru the Holy Spirit, calls us to “receive” its truth with a mild manner that is driven by love. This word is able to “save us as in truth, it implicates & recognizes Christ only as the Savior of our very “souls.”
“Lay aside”—apotiyhmi—To put off or aside or away. Strong—To put away (literally or figuratively):-- Cast off, lay apart (aside, down), put away (off). From—apo—"off," i.e. away (from something near), in various senses (of place, time, or relation; literal or figurative) & —tiyhmi—1) To set, put, place.
“Filthiness”—ruparia—N.—1) To make filthy, befoul; 2) To defile, dishonor; 3) To make filthy. Used 1X.
“Overflow”—perisseia—1) Abundance, superabundantly, superfluously; 2) Superiority, preference, pre-eminence; 3) Gain, profit; 4) Residue, remains: the wickedness remaining over in a Christian from his state prior to conversion. Used by the Greeks to describe the excess wax in their ears.

“Souls”—quch—Strong—Breath, i.e. (by implication) Spirit, abstractly or concretely (the animal sentient principle only; thus distinguished on the one hand from pneuma, which is the rational & immortal soul; & on the other from zwh, which is mere vitality, even of plants: these terms thus exactly correspond respectively to the Hebrew vpn neh'-fesh, xwr roo'-akh, & yx khah'-ee-- Heart (+ -ily), life, mind, soul, + us, + you. Thayer—1) Breath—1a) The breath of life—1a1) The vital force which animates the body & shows itself in breathing, 1b) Life, 1c) That in which there is life—1c1) A living being, a living soul; 2) The soul—2a) The seat of the feelings, desires, affections, aversions (our heart, soul etc.).
:22—“But be doers of the word, & not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
This implanted word(:21) which is capable of bringing about our salvation must be heeded in order to effect that salvation. We must thus “do” the word or rather put it into practice. It must first turn our hearts God-ward, for true discernment, & secondly it must be enacted or engaged in real life.
Upon our choosing not to heed the word we have in fact, chosen deception.
God does not want hearers only but hearers who actually do what is heard! The doing is God’s desire. Otherwise He would not have said something involving our actions. This is because God never wastes effort. He is perfectly efficient.
:23—“For if anyone is a hearer of the word & not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror;”
:24—“for he observes himself, goes away, & immediately forgets what kind of man he was.”
“Observes”—katanoew—1) To perceive, remark, observe, understand; 2) To consider attentively, fix one's eyes or mind upon. Strong—to observe fully:-- behold, consider, discover, perceive.
“Forgets”—epilanyanomai—1) To forget; 2) neglecting, no longer caring for; 3) Forgotten, given over to oblivion, i.e. uncared for. Strong—To lose out of mind; by implication, to neglect:-- (be) forget(-ful of).
“Kind”—opoiov—Of what sort or quality, what manner of.
:25 —“But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty & continues in it, & is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.”
The “perfect law” which is “liberty” is the Good News of God’s saving grace thru faith in Jesus Christ. That which truly brings about a transformation to a new creature thru the new birth.
One must “look into” with intense scrutiny & become either convinced or dissuaded.
Some seem to readily accept this “perfect law of liberty.” But they do it frivolously/emotionally/half-heartedly—To satisfy others OR Try to convince themselves OR are fooled by a flawed understanding of truth. Thus when the heat comes, they shrink away & thereby do not “continue” in it. Like seed cast upon stony places(Mat. 13:5-6 &20-21), they immediately take root, yet wither when the heat comes.
“Looks into”—parakuptw—To bend beside, i.e. Lean over (so as to peer within):-- Look (into), stoop down. ‘Thru stooping.’ Thayer—metaph. To look carefully into, inspect curiously
“Perfect”—teleiov—Complete (in various applications of labor, growth, mental & moral character, etc.); completeness:-- Of full age, man, perfect.
“Law”—nomov—1) Anything established, anything received by usage, a custom, a law, a command. nomov is the common word meaning law. It may mean law in general. In the N.T., however, it usually means the law of God, & most frequently the Mosaic law.
“Liberty”—eleuyeria—1) Liberty to do or to omit things having no relationship to salvation; 2) Fancied liberty—2a) Licence, the liberty to do as one pleases; 3) True liberty is living as we should not as we please. Strong—Freedom (legitimate or licentious, chiefly moral or ceremonial):-- Liberty.
“Continues”—paramenw—1) To remain beside, continue always near; 2) To survive, remain alive.
“Forgetful”—epilhsmonh—Forgetfulness. Strong—Negligence:-- X Forgetful.
“Work”—ergon—1) Business, employment, that which any one is occupied—1a) That which one undertakes to do, enterprise, undertaking; 2) any product whatever, any thing accomplished by hand, art, industry, or mind; 3) An act, deed, thing done: the idea of working is emphasized in opp. to that which is less than work.

But when the sun was up they were scorched, & because they had no root they withered away.”....““But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word & immediately receives it with joy; “yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles.”
