Ezekiel 47: 1 – 23
A River Runs Through It
1 Then he brought me back to the door of the temple; and there was water, flowing from under the threshold of the temple toward the east, for the front of the temple faced east; the water was flowing from under the right side of the temple, south of the altar. 2 He brought me out by way of the north gate, and led me around on the outside to the outer gateway that faces east; and there was water, running out on the right side.3 And when the man went out to the east with the line in his hand, he measured one thousand cubits, and he brought me through the waters; the water came up to my ankles. 4 Again he measured one thousand and brought me through the waters; the water came up to my knees. Again he measured one thousand and brought me through; the water came up to my waist. 5 Again he measured one thousand, and it was a river that I could not cross; for the water was too deep, water in which one must swim, a river that could not be crossed. 6 He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen this?” Then he brought me and returned me to the bank of the river. 7 When I returned, there, along the bank of the river, were very many trees on one side and the other. 8 Then he said to me: “This water flows toward the eastern region, goes down into the valley, and enters the sea. When it reaches the sea, its waters are healed. 9 And it shall be that every living thing that moves, wherever the rivers go, will live. There will be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters go there; for they will be healed, and everything will live wherever the river goes. 10 It shall be that fishermen will stand by it from En Gedi to En Eglaim; they will be places for spreading their nets. Their fish will be of the same kinds as the fish of the Great Sea, exceedingly many. 11 But its swamps and marshes will not be healed; they will be given over to salt. 12 Along the bank of the river, on this side and that, will grow all kinds of trees used for food; their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. They will bear fruit every month, because their water flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for medicine.” 13 Thus says the Lord GOD: “These are the borders by which you shall divide the land as an inheritance among the twelve tribes of Israel. Joseph shall have two portions. 14 You shall inherit it equally with one another; for I raised My hand in an oath to give it to your fathers, and this land shall fall to you as your inheritance. 15 “This shall be the border of the land on the north: from the Great Sea, by the road to Hethlon, as one goes to Zedad, 16 Hamath, Berothah, Sibraim (which is between the border of Damascus and the border of Hamath), to Hazar Hatticon (which is on the border of Hauran). 17 Thus the boundary shall be from the Sea to Hazar Enan, the border of Damascus; and as for the north, northward, it is the border of Hamath. This is the north side. 18 “On the east side you shall mark out the border from between Hauran and Damascus, and between Gilead and the land of Israel, along the Jordan, and along the eastern side of the sea. This is the east side. 19 “The south side, toward the South, shall be from Tamar to the waters of Meribah by Kadesh, along the brook to the Great Sea. This is the south side, toward the South. 20 “The west side shall be the Great Sea, from the southern boundary until one comes to a point opposite Hamath. This is the west side. 21 “Thus you shall divide this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel. 22 It shall be that you will divide it by lot as an inheritance for yourselves, and for the strangers who dwell among you and who bear children among you. They shall be to you as native-born among the children of Israel; they shall have an inheritance with you among the tribes of Israel. 23 And it shall be that in whatever tribe the stranger dwells, there you shall give him his inheritance,” says the Lord GOD.
We continue to study about the amazing things that will happen in the Millennium. Many people are familiar with chapter 47 where it teaches about a river that begins at the Temple. What will start out as a little spring turns out to form a river that will flow into the ‘Dead Sea’. During the new beginnings of the One Thousand year reign of our Master and Messiah – The Lord Jesus Christ, all things will be new. Look at what the prophet Isaiah said in chapter 11, 1 There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots. 2 The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. 3 His delight is in the fear of the LORD, and He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, nor decide by the hearing of His ears; 4 But with righteousness He shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked. 5 Righteousness shall be the belt of His loins, and faithfulness the belt of His waist. 6 “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, The leopard shall lie down with the young goat, the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. 7 The cow and the bear shall graze; Their young ones shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. 8 The nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole, and the weaned child shall put his hand in the viper’s den. 9 They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. 10 “And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, Who shall stand as a banner to the people; for the Gentiles shall seek Him, and His resting place shall be glorious.”
We read of two other significant rivers, one which opened the bible and one which closes the bible. In Genesis chapter 2 we read, “8 The LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. 9 And out of the ground the LORD God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10 Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads. 11 The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which skirts the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 And the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and the onyx stone are there. 13 The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one which goes around the whole land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it is the one which goes toward the east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates.”
In Revelation chapter 22 is the other river that is not the same as we read in Ezekiel, 1 And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. 3 And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. 4 They shall see His face, and His name shall be on their foreheads. 5 There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.” This river is in the new Heaven and Earth.”
The prophet Zachariah in his book at chapter 14 speaks of this river also, 8 And in that day it shall be that living waters shall flow from Jerusalem, half of them toward the eastern sea and half of them toward the western sea; in both summer and winter it shall occur. 9 And the LORD shall be King over all the earth. In that day it shall be— “ The LORD is One,” and His Name One. 10 All the land shall be turned into a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem. Jerusalem shall be raised up and inhabited in her place from Benjamin’s Gate to the place of the First Gate and the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the king’s winepresses. 11 The people shall dwell in it; and no longer shall there be utter destruction, but Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited.”
We will find out that the significance of this river is to give life. A proper water supply is one of the primary sources of our existence. Remember, we are but dirt. Without water we dry up and die. Our Lord recognized this importance. We read about this in the Gospel of John chapter 7. The feast that was being celebrated was the Feast of Tabernacles. It is interesting that the priests would fill a vessel with water from the spring Gihon. A part of the ritual celebration over prayers the priest would pour out the water. With that background we see our Lord next action quite stirring, “37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” The very source of life giving sustenance was right there in their presence.
It might not sound that big a deal for us but to the Jewish people this prophecy is the answer to their dreams. Look at these passages of Scripture;
Isaiah 32, “15 Until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is counted as a forest”
Isaiah 44, “3 For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, and My blessing on your offspring; 4 They will spring up among the grass like willows by the watercourses.’ 5 One will say, ‘I am the LORD’s’; another will call himself by the name of Jacob; another will write with his hand, ‘The LORD’s,’ and name himself by the name of Israel.”
Joel 2, “23 Be glad then, you children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God; for He has given you the former rain faithfully, and He will cause the rain to come down for you— the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month. 24 The threshing floors shall be full of wheat, and the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil. 25 “ So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the crawling locust, the consuming locust, and the chewing locust, my great army which I sent among you. 26 You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, who has dealt wondrously with you; and My people shall never be put to shame. 27 Then you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel: I am the LORD your God and there is no other. My people shall never be put to shame 28 “ And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. 29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. 30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: blood and fire and pillars of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD. 32 And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance, as the LORD has said, among the remnant whom the LORD calls.”
Water issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward. It is a picture of spiritual life and growth whether it is described as rain or as a river. The prophet Ezekiel had already said in chapter 36, 25 Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. Our Holy Spirit transforms and revives man.
These two Psalms say it all;
Psalm 36, 8 They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, and You give them drink from the river of Your pleasure. 9 For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.”
Psalm 46, “There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High.”
7 When I returned, there, along the bank of the river, were very many trees on one side and the other.
In just a few verses we have witnessed the source of the river. { Our Holy Righteous God developed it from the right of the Temple]. Then we see its miraculous growth. Its size went from a spring to a river so deep that one would have to swim. Now we read of the scope of its impact. Living vegetation sprung up. There were trees on both sides. But this is not enough of the amazing result of its flow. Look at what happens next,
8 Then he said to me: “This water flows toward the eastern region, goes down into the valley, and enters the sea. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for medicine.”
The Holy One causes the water to run over the dry and barren land. He causes this land to be instantaneous fruitful. He causes the deadest place in the world, The Dead Sea, to be healed. It becomes a fresh water lake where in addition to the Sea of Galilee fish will thrive. Notice the point of the fishermen spreading their nets. That phrase indicates that they are a lot of fish in the water.
Why do you think our Lord is doing this? – “11 But its swamps and marshes will not be healed; they will be given over to salt.” This is not a disadvantage but our Lord is leaving His people some valuable resources. The minerals from the Dead Sea are marketable for their rich properties. Our Lord is leaving them some for this benefit along with the valuable commodity of salt.
I find this passage to my liking, “12 Along the bank of the river, on this side and that, will grow all kinds of trees used for food; their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. They will bear fruit every month, because their water flows from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food, and their leaves for medicine.”
I enjoy helping people with their various issues by encouraging them to put their trust in our God. He can transform us into a new creature no matter how lifeless we have become. He has the Power to heal. If you have ever tried to help some individuals balance themselves spiritually you may run into some roadblocks. A person may have had bad Psychological counseling or they might have a debilitating illness. Now, hopefully, you and I both know what is our life source and that is the bible. To get people to that stage of total dependence on Jehovah Elyon – The Lord Most High, I had to familiarize myself with these two obstacles in order to understand what the people were going through. I obtained my Doctorate in Psychology to assist people who have already trodden down that dead path to know the ins and outs of what they were fed. On a better part, I finished a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine to offer alternative therapies to individual physiological problems. When I read about how the leaves of the trees would be used for healing, I rejoiced. Perhaps our Lord could use me to help others in the Millennium.
13 Thus says the Lord GOD: “These are the borders by which you shall divide the land as an inheritance among the twelve tribes of Israel.
Our Holy Father will leave no one out. Everyone is going to receive a proper inheritance. The land would be split equally between the tribes, 14 You shall inherit it equally with one another.’ Joseph would receive two portions because he bore two sons, which became tribes – Ephraim and Manasseh. Someone took the time and measured this territory. It would be 280 miles total in available land for the tribes.
The new Israel will be inclusive not exclusive. There will be room for foreigners as long as they were willing to become a part of the covenant and worship Adoni Yahweh. Our Lord had made this promise in the past as these Scriptures testify;
Leviticus 24, “22 You shall have the same law for the stranger and for one from your own country; for I am the LORD your God.’”
Numbers 15, “29 You shall have one law for him who sins unintentionally, for him who is native-born among the children of Israel and for the stranger who dwells among them.”
Isaiah 56, 3 Do not let the son of the foreigner who has joined himself to the LORD speak, saying, “ The LORD has utterly separated me from His people”; nor let the eunuch say, “ Here I am, a dry tree.” 4 For thus says the LORD: “ To the eunuchs who keep My Sabbaths, and choose what pleases Me, and hold fast My covenant, 5 Even to them I will give in My house and within My walls a place and a name better than that of sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that shall not be cut off. 6 “ Also the sons of the foreigner who join themselves to the LORD, to serve Him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be His servants— Everyone who keeps from defiling the Sabbath, and holds fast My covenant— 7 Even them I will bring to My holy mountain, and make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on My altar; For My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations.” 8 The Lord GOD, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, says, “ Yet I will gather to him others besides those who are gathered to him.”
