Ezekiel 25: 1- 17
Judgment against the east
“1 The word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, set your face against the Ammonites, and prophesy against them. 3 Say to the Ammonites, ‘Hear the word of the Lord GOD! Thus says the Lord GOD: “Because you said, ‘Aha!’ against My sanctuary when it was profaned, and against the land of Israel when it was desolate, and against the house of Judah when they went into captivity, 4 indeed, therefore, I will deliver you as a possession to the men of the East, and they shall set their encampments among you and make their dwellings among you; they shall eat your fruit, and they shall drink your milk. 5 And I will make Rabbah a stable for camels and Ammon a resting place for flocks. Then you shall know that I am the LORD.”6 ‘For thus says the Lord GOD: “Because you clapped your hands, stamped your feet, and rejoiced in heart with all your disdain for the land of Israel, 7 indeed, therefore, I will stretch out My hand against you, and give you as plunder to the nations; I will cut you off from the peoples, and I will cause you to perish from the countries; I will destroy you, and you shall know that I am the LORD.” 8 ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Because Moab and Seir say, ‘Look! The house of Judah is like all the nations,’ 9 therefore, behold, I will clear the territory of Moab of cities, of the cities on its frontier, the glory of the country, Beth Jeshimoth, Baal Meon, and Kirjathaim. 10 To the men of the East I will give it as a possession, together with the Ammonites, that the Ammonites may not be remembered among the nations. 11 And I will execute judgments upon Moab, and they shall know that I am the LORD.” 12 ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Because of what Edom did against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has greatly offended by avenging itself on them,” 13 therefore thus says the Lord GOD: “I will also stretch out My hand against Edom, cut off man and beast from it, and make it desolate from Teman; Dedan shall fall by the sword. 14 I will lay My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel, that they may do in Edom according to My anger and according to My fury; and they shall know My vengeance,” says the Lord GOD. 15 ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Because the Philistines dealt vengefully and took vengeance with a spiteful heart, to destroy because of the old hatred,” 16 therefore thus says the Lord GOD: “I will stretch out My hand against the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethites and destroy the remnant of the seacoast. 17 I will execute great vengeance on them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I lay My vengeance upon them.”
Beginning in this chapter through chapter 32 we are going to read and learn about God’s message to the nations that surrounded Israel. Our Holy God against whom He has something against, picks seven nations. These nations are Ammon, Moab, Edom, Philistia, Tyre, Sidon, and Egypt. These foreign countries would be dealt with because of their attitude towards Him and His people the Jews. These countries were not called upon by God to be an instrument to deal with disciplining His rebellious people. These nations went out of their way in their evil schemes and deeds to kill and destroy God’s people. These nations would learn that He Is The Only Real God – Yahweh. They would learn the hard way about what you get when you mess with God’s kids.
Our Precious Holy Spirit Is Awesome. You see Him do wonders as He arranges the order of this message. The nations listed will be addressed in a clockwise direction ending east of Jordan. Seven throughout Scripture is seen as divine perfection [the world was completed in seven days]. It may be reasonable then to state that these messages apply to the whole world, not just to the nations specifically mentioned.
You will note that Babylon is not listed as a country the Lord was angry at because she was being used as God’s temporary agent. King Nebuchadnezzar was God’s ‘servant’ for the task and he was even referred to as God’s ‘son’. Take a look with me at these passages;
Jeremiah 32: 3 – 5, “3 For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up, saying, “Why do you prophesy and say, ‘Thus says the LORD: “Behold, I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it; 4 and Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape from the hand of the Chaldeans, but shall surely be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon, and shall speak with him face to face, and see him eye to eye; 5 then he shall lead Zedekiah to Babylon, and there he shall be until I visit him,” says the LORD; “though you fight with the Chaldeans, you shall not succeed”?
Jeremiah 25: 9, “9 behold, I will send and take all the families of the north,’ says the LORD, ‘and Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant, and will bring them against this land, against its inhabitants, and against these nations all around, and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, a hissing, and perpetual desolations.”
I was considering naming this study and other studies through chapter 32 as ‘Judgment on the Islamic nations’. However, as I mentioned before these verses not only cover the seven nations, which happen to all be Islamic nations, but the judgments apply to all other countries of the earth as well. This includes godless or watered down Christian countries.
Our Great and Everlasting Jehovah Elyon will prove that despite His serious dealings with the Israelites, His selected people, He was still the Sovereign God of All the world. God will never ever forget His people the Jews. He will deal with all nations who hurt His elect. He will again restore His people to their land and be their only True and Living God.
The first nation to be addressed by our Adoni Yahweh is Ammon. These people were relatives of the Jews based on being a descendent of Lot, Abraham’s nephew. We read about this in the book of Genesis chapter 19, “30 Then Lot went up out of Zoar and dwelt in the mountains, and his two daughters were with him; for he was afraid to dwell in Zoar. And he and his two daughters dwelt in a cave. 31 Now the firstborn said to the younger, “Our father is old, and there is no man on the earth to come in to us as is the custom of all the earth. 32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father.” 33 So they made their father drink wine that night. And the firstborn went in and lay with her father, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. 34 It happened on the next day that the firstborn said to the younger, “Indeed I lay with my father last night; let us make him drink wine tonight also, and you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve the lineage of our father.” 35 Then they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose and lay with him, and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. 36 Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father. 37 The firstborn bore a son and called his name Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day. 38 And the younger, she also bore a son and called his name Ben-Ammi; he is the father of the people of Ammon to this day.”
Because of this family relationship our Holy Lord Watched over and protected the people of Ammon. When the Israelites were traveling to the Promised Land the Holy Everlasting God instructed the Hebrews to leave the Ammonites alone. The book of Deuteronomy chapter 2 informs us of this, “19 And when you come near the people of Ammon, do not harass them or meddle with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the people of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to the descendants of Lot as a possession.’”
Even though they were blood relatives to the Israelites, the Ammonites turned out to be enemies. Look at some of these instances from the Bible;
Judges 3: 13, “13 Then he gathered to himself the people of Ammon and Amalek, went and defeated Israel, and took possession of the City of Palms.”
Judges 10, 6 Then the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served the Baals and the Ashtoreths, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the people of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; and they forsook the LORD and did not serve Him. 7 So the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and He sold them into the hands of the Philistines and into the hands of the people of Ammon. 8 From that year they harassed and oppressed the children of Israel for eighteen years—all the children of Israel who were on the other side of the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, in Gilead. 9 Moreover the people of Ammon crossed over the Jordan to fight against Judah also, against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was severely distressed. 10 And the children of Israel cried out to the LORD, saying, “We have sinned against You, because we have both forsaken our God and served the Baals!”
2 Chronicles 20, 1 It happened after this that the people of Moab with the people of Ammon, and others with them besides the Ammonites, came to battle against Jehoshaphat. 2 Then some came and told Jehoshaphat, saying, “A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, from Syria; and they are in Hazazon Tamar” (which is En Gedi). 3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4 So Judah gathered together to ask help from the LORD; and from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD.5 Then Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court, 6 and said: “O LORD God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and in Your hand is there not power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You? 7 Are You not our God, who drove out the inhabitants of this land before Your people Israel, and gave it to the descendants of Abraham Your friend forever? 8 And they dwell in it, and have built You a sanctuary in it for Your name, saying, 9 ‘If disaster comes upon us—sword, judgment, pestilence, or famine—we will stand before this temple and in Your presence (for Your name is in this temple), and cry out to You in our affliction, and You will hear and save.’ 10 And now, here are the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir—whom You would not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them and did not destroy them— 11 here they are, rewarding us by coming to throw us out of Your possession which You have given us to inherit. 12 O our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.” 13 Now all Judah, with their little ones, their wives, and their children, stood before the LORD. 14 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly. 15 And he said, “Listen, all you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat! Thus says the LORD to you: ‘Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16 Tomorrow go down against them. They will surely come up by the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the brook before the Wilderness of Jeruel. 17 You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the LORD, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!’ Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the LORD is with you.” 18 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem bowed before the LORD, worshiping the LORD. 19 Then the Levites of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with voices loud and high. 20 So they rose early in the morning and went out into the Wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the LORD your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.” 21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the LORD, and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying: “Praise the LORD, for His mercy endures forever.”22 Now when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated. 23 For the people of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them. And when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another. 24 So when Judah came to a place overlooking the wilderness, they looked toward the multitude; and there were their dead bodies, fallen on the earth. No one had escaped. 25 When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away their spoil, they found among them an abundance of valuables on the dead bodies, and precious jewelry, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away; and they were three days gathering the spoil because there was so much. 26 And on the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Berachah, for there they blessed the LORD; therefore the name of that place was called The Valley of Berachah until this day. 27 Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, with Jehoshaphat in front of them, to go back to Jerusalem with joy, for the LORD had made them rejoice over their enemies. 28 So they came to Jerusalem, with stringed instruments and harps and trumpets, to the house of the LORD. 29 And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries when they heard that the LORD had fought against the enemies of Israel. 30 Then the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet, for his God gave him rest all around.”
The leaders of Judah instead of obeying The Mighty Yahweh and submitting to Babylonian rule made an alliance with Ammon to resist this condition. When the Israelites attack the Ammonites did not uphold their end of the agreement and left Judah to be destroyed. Besides this evil they turned on the Jews and slaughtered them adding this vile sin upon their other sins.
“1 The word of the LORD came to me, saying, 2 “Son of man, set your face against the Ammonites, and prophesy against them. 3 Say to the Ammonites, ‘Hear the word of the Lord GOD! Thus says the Lord GOD: “Because you said, ‘Aha!’ against My sanctuary when it was profaned, and against the land of Israel when it was desolate, and against the house of Judah when they went into captivity,”
Ezekiel was able to speak again after news had arrived back in Babylon that Jerusalem had fallen captive to the Chadian army. There would be a gap in his message to his fellow captives. Despite their horrible situation God had not forgotten them. He would show His people about His care and concern in regards to their enemies behavior towards them.
Picture yourselves seated with the elders of Israel in Ezekiel’s house. You notice him react and stare off. He turns in his chair and faces east. He is hearing from God, ‘Set your face towards the children of Ammon’. He hears it but you and the other elders did not hear God’s Words. The elders had gotten use to Ezekiel’s strange reactions; so I think they might have asked the others, what is he doing that for? Some might have responded, ‘Well he is facing east, so what does this mean? Ezekiel then speaks, ‘Son of man, set your face against the Ammonites, and prophesy against them.
“4 indeed, therefore, I will deliver you as a possession to the men of the East, and they shall set their encampments among you and make their dwellings among you; they shall eat your fruit, and they shall drink your milk. 5 And I will make Rabbah a stable for camels and Ammon a resting place for flocks. Then you shall know that I am the LORD.”
If the elders did not know who Ezekiel was talking about, they knew now. Rabbah was the capital of the Ammonites. Their punishment would be that their whole country would be taken over by the very people they despised the most, ‘I will deliver you as a possession to the men of the East, and they shall set their encampments among you and make their dwellings among you; they shall eat your fruit, and they shall drink your milk. 5 And I will make Rabbah a stable for camels and Ammon a resting place for flocks. Then you shall know that I am the LORD.”
I thought the nation of Ammon was east, so who are the men of the east.’ We read a unique fact in the book of Genesis chapter 21, ‘9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, scoffing. 10 Therefore she said to Abraham, “Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, namely with Isaac.” 11 And the matter was very displeasing in Abraham’s sight because of his son.12 But God said to Abraham, “Do not let it be displeasing in your sight because of the lad or because of your bondwoman. Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice; for in Isaac your seed shall be called. 13 Yet I will also make a nation of the son of the bondwoman, because he is your seed.” 14 So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water; and putting it on her shoulder, he gave it and the boy to Hagar, and sent her away. Then she departed and wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba. 15 And the water in the skin was used up, and she placed the boy under one of the shrubs. 16 Then she went and sat down across from him at a distance of about a bowshot; for she said to herself, “Let me not see the death of the boy.” So she sat opposite him, and lifted her voice and wept. 17 And God heard the voice of the lad. Then the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said to her, “What ails you, Hagar? Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18 Arise, lift up the lad and hold him with your hand, for I will make him a great nation.” 19 Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the lad a drink. 20 So God was with the lad; and he grew and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer. 21 He dwelt in the Wilderness of Paran; and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.” The descendents of Ishmael were very active nomads that terrorized the Ammonites. Many of Ishmael’s descendents were desert dwellers. These men of the east would ultimately take over the whole land.
Look at France and England today. They have allowed immigrants, principally from Islamic nations, come and live in their land. At first they were quite happy with this arrangement because these refugees would do all the menial labor for low costs. However, these natives from other countries have no allegiance to their new country. The result is a new nightmare that they cannot see their way out of trouble. Such a condition happened to the Ammonites until they drifted off the pages of history as a nation.
6 ‘For thus says the Lord GOD: “Because you clapped your hands, stamped your feet, and rejoiced in heart with all your disdain for the land of Israel, 7 indeed, therefore, I will stretch out My hand against you, and give you as plunder to the nations; I will cut you off from the peoples, and I will cause you to perish from the countries; I will destroy you, and you shall know that I am the LORD.”
Not only did they not respond to Israel defense but they rejoiced over the harm done to the Jews. They sang and danced a victory celebration. Although God did not authorize the leaders of Judah to make a war treaty alliance with Ammon,or anyone else for that matter, because they should have trusted in Him. It does not alleviate the fact of their malice towards God’s elect. You mock God’s kids; you also mock Him. Not Good!
8 ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Because Moab and Seir say, ‘Look! 11 And I will execute judgments upon Moab, and they shall know that I am the LORD.”
As a reminder, Moab was also a direct relative to the Hebrews from Lot’s other son. In Genesis chapter 19 we find this, “37 The firstborn bore a son and called his name Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day.” Of the two brothers Moab was more settled. Both brothers worked in unison. Sometimes one became more dominant then the other as these two reference point out;
Judges 3, “12 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD. So the LORD strengthened Eglon king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD. 13 Then he gathered to himself the people of Ammon and Amalek, went and defeated Israel, and took possession of the City of Palms. 14 So the children of Israel served Eglon king of Moab eighteen years.”
Judges 10, “6 Then the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served the Baals and the Ashtoreths, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the people of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; and they forsook the LORD and did not serve Him. 9 Moreover the people of Ammon crossed over the Jordan to fight against Judah also, against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was severely distressed.”
So what did the Moabites do wrong? Look at this indictment, ‘Because Moab and Seir say, ‘Look! The house of Judah is like all the nations’ They were saying in effect that the God of Israel is powerless, He Is just like all the other gods. If Judah’s God Is supposes to be All Powerful, then why didn’t He protect the Jews from being destroyed? They were mocking that The Lord Yahweh Is nothing special.
They would receive the same punishment Ammon their brother received. These desert dwellers would come and destroy the mighty fortresses and notable cities.
“12 ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Because of what Edom did against the house of Judah by taking vengeance, and has greatly offended by avenging itself on them,” 13 therefore thus says the Lord GOD: “I will also stretch out My hand against Edom, cut off man and beast from it, and make it desolate from Teman; Dedan shall fall by the sword. 14 I will lay My vengeance on Edom by the hand of My people Israel, that they may do in Edom according to My anger and according to My fury; and they shall know My vengeance,” says the Lord GOD.”
Now it is Edom’s turn. They also were related.- Some family, huh? Ammon and Moab were descendents of Lot, Abraham’s nephew. Edom on the other hand descended from Abraham’s son Isaac who’s wife bore him Esau.
Genesis 32: 3, “3 Then Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.”
Because of their family heritage God also instructed Moses to avoid any conflict with the Edomites when traveling to the Promised Land. The book of Deuteronomy informs us about this, 18 ‘This day you are to cross over at Ar, the boundary of Moab. 19 And when you come near the people of Ammon, do not harass them or meddle with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the people of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to the descendants of Lot as a possession.’” 20 (That was also regarded as a land of giants; giants formerly dwelt there. But the Ammonites call them Zamzummim, 21 a people as great and numerous and tall as the Anakim. But the LORD destroyed them before them, and they dispossessed them and dwelt in their place, 22 just as He had done for the descendants of Esau, who dwelt in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites from before them. They dispossessed them and dwelt in their place, even to this day.”
Over the years they also became enemies of the Israelites. In fact during the time of our Lord Jesus Christ on earth an evil ruthless family of Edomites – Herod’s, ruled the Jews
Ammon and Moab were bad but Edom surpassed these two others in its brutality against the Jews. Look at what Psalm 137 says, “7 Remember, O LORD, against the sons of Edom the day of Jerusalem, who said, “Raze it, raze it, to its very foundation!” 8 O daughter of Babylon, who are to be destroyed, happy the one who repays you as you have served us. 9 Happy the one who takes and dashes your little ones against the rock!” When some of the Israelites tried to flee to Edom they were turned away by the sword.
Teman was a city in norther Edom. It was well known for its wisdom as we read in the book of Jeremiah chapter 49, “7 Against Edom. Thus says the LORD of hosts: “ Is wisdom no more in Teman? Has counsel perished from the prudent? Has their wisdom vanished?”
Dedan, on the other hand, was situated in the north west of Arabia. It was a prosperous city due to its proximity to the caravan trade routes.
Ezekiel 27: 20 tells us, 20 Dedan was your merchant in saddlecloths for riding.”
Isaiah 21: 13 also reports, “13 The burden against Arabia. in the forest in Arabia you will lodge, O you traveling companies of Dedanites”
I love our Lord’s use of the words ‘they will do in Edom.’ Skeptics will argue that this action is hypocritical. God Is going to enact revenge on Islamic nations but it is okay for Him to allow the Jews to initiate revenge. How come?
Our Holy Lord used Nebuchadnezzar as His ‘agent’ to enact revenge on His sinful people. His instruments are measured and deserved. He Is The Lord Of Righteousness – Jehovah Tsidkenu. Everything He does or authorizes is always right. In His proper judgment, He measures His discipline. The other type of revenge is cruel, thoughtless, and indiscriminate which goes way beyond what is was measured to do. You have heard or have said, ‘the punishment far outweighs, the crime.’ This type of vengeance our Holy Lord of Hosts – Jehovah Sabbaoth has no part in.
“15 ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Because the Philistines dealt vengefully and took vengeance with a spiteful heart, to destroy because of the old hatred,” 16 therefore thus says the Lord GOD: “I will stretch out My hand against the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethites and destroy the remnant of the seacoast. 17 I will execute great vengeance on them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I lay My vengeance upon them.”
We now see our Holy Father give attention to a non-relative. Israel’s old time arch enemy, the Philistines. They were greatly weakened by king David but continued to exist as a people, yet they no longer had any prominence in influence over the Jews.
The Precious Shepherd God of Israel – Jehovah Roi, has finally had enough of these foreigners. His Mercy and Grace in putting up with them has come to an end. How many Philistines do you know? His analysis of their behavior is short and to the point. ‘Because the Philistines dealt vengefully and took vengeance with a spiteful heart, to destroy because of the old hatred,” 16 therefore thus says the Lord GOD: “I will stretch out My hand against the Philistines, and I will cut off the Cherethites and destroy the remnant of the seacoast. 17 I will execute great vengeance on them with furious rebukes; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I lay My vengeance upon them.” What they have sown they now reap.
The Cherethites or ‘Cretans’ were linked with the Philistines. The book of Zephaniah chapter 2 mentions them, “5 Woe to the inhabitants of the seacoast, the nation of the Cherethites! The word of the LORD is against you, O Canaan, land of the Philistines: “ I will destroy you; So there shall be no inhabitant.”
The world has been tricked into thinking today’s Palestinians are descendents of the Philistines. This is not true. To insult the Jews after the Roman army destroyed the city of Jerusalem; they changed the name to Palestine. There never was a group of people descended from this group of people. The Philistines as described here ceased to be a people
Now before we call it quits, I want to stimulate your thinking. Let us take a look at a passage that refers to these nations in the future.
Daniel 11: 41 says, “41 He shall also enter the Glorious Land, and many countries shall be overthrown; but these shall escape from his hand: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people of Ammon.”
