The New Heavens, The New Earth

and The New Jerusalem Revealed

Revelation 21: 1-8

Have ever thought about what eternity will be like? What will it be like to live with God, forever and ever?

Let’s take a closer look at these eight verses and see what it will be like.

V. 1John sees a new creation as new heaven and a new earth were made.

What happened to the old one?

˜nothing, God just made a new somewhere else. ˜John said they had passed away and even the sea was gone.

The reality is that everything as we know it will be totally destroyed.

Put a check in the box next to the items that are gone, forever:

–The sun –The moon –Every star –Satan –All believers –Every planet –Severe thunderstorms –Hurricanes –Tornados –Tragic weather –God

Do you believe that every star and planet in every solar system will be gone œYes œNo Just our solar system

What do think will be so different about this new heaven and new earth? Discussion time

The next time you look up at a starry night, smell a flower, or look out across a field of wheat or look at any of the wonders of this world; try to imagine what the night sky will look like, what the world around you will look and smell like when those things are part of a universe without sin.

I wonder what they will be like, created in perfect magnificence.

V.2 John saw the City of God, the New Jerusalem coming down from God out of heaven.

But I thought that heaven and earth passed away? Remember what Paul said about trip he took?

2Cr 12:2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago--whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows--such a one was caught up to the third heaven. [NKJV]

2Cr 12:2 I was caught up into the third heaven fourteen years ago. [NLT]

Why would God destroy His dwelling place? He didn’t need to, since His dwelling place would already be perfect.

Some would argue that the only thing that is destroyed is the earth and the surrounding atmosphere. But when you take the earth out of the equation you throw the entire universe into a tail spin.

John also said that the new earth was adorned like a bride. Now I have been to few weddings where the bride was wearing blue jeans but for the most part the bride is adorned in magnificent beauty.

We will discuss this New Jerusalem in more detail, in the next passage.

V. 3 There is going to be immediate fellowship with God.

Can you think of a time or times, when you could not feel the presence of God?

Think about how wonderful it will be when we will never fell that way again. We will always be in the presence of God and able to fellowship with Him face to face.

WHAT A DAY THAT WILL BE!!!!!!

V4-6 Everything will be just perfect.

When this day comes we will not only be living a perfect world but a perfected or glorified body, as well.

Look at the words of this wonderful hymn

There is coming a day when no heartaches shall come

No more clouds in the sky, no more tears to dim the eye.

All is peace forevermore on that happy golden shore,

What a day, glorious day that will be.

Chorus

What a day that will be when my Jesus I shall see,

And I look upon His face,

The One who saved me by His grace;

When He takes me by the hand

And leads me through the Promised Land,

What a day, glorious day that will be.

There’ll be no sorrow there, no more burdens to bear,

No more sickness, no pain, no more parting over there;

And forever I will be with the One who died for me,

What a day, glorious day that will be.

Chorus

What a day that will be when my Jesus I shall see,

And I look upon His face,

The One who saved me by His grace;

When He takes me by the hand

And leads me through the Promised Land,

What a day, glorious day that will be.

What a day, glorious day that will be!

WHAT A DAY THAT WILL BE!!!!!!

Let’s list the things that John says will not be there.

1. Tears Because God is going to wipe them ALL away

2. No one will ever die again

3. There will be no more crying

4. Won’t it be good when all pain is taken away?

*When you think about no more death a number of things must come to mind.

a. There’ll be no more aging, watching our bodies fall apart until we die

b. No more sons, daughters, husbands or wives will be lost in war. There will be no more answering the phone to find out that a loved one has been murdered.

c. Never again will a doctor have to look at two young parents and shatter their dreams by saying I’m sorry, we could not save the baby. No more husbands/wives who will wonder what they will do without their spouse.

d. No more funerals or cemeteries. No more weeping over losing a loved one.

*What do you think; when you think of no more sorrow/crying?

a. There will be no more broken people, broken homes or broken families.

b. No more disappointment or regret. No more failure or weakness.

c. There never again be a man, woman, boy or girl without a place to call home. Never again will any child go to bed hungry or thirsty.

d. No more wives/children crying because Dad just decided he didn’t want them anymore.

e. No more mothers crying over a son/daughter lost to the alcohol/drug or gang world. To prostitution or gambling.

*How does it make you feel to no that there will be no more physical pain?

Scripture:

Rev 7:17 for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

2Cr 4:17 -18 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding [and] eternal weight of glory,

while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen [are] temporary, but the things which are not seen [are] eternal.

1Cr 15:26 The last enemy [that] will be destroyed [is] death.

1Cr 15:51-54 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed--

in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal [must] put on immortality.

So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory."

God Himself makes us a promise that every bit of this really will take place.

He says that His Word is not only true but it is also faithful.

1Th 5:24 He who calls you [is] faithful, who also will do [it].

2Ti 2:11-13 [This is] a faithful saying: For if we died with [Him], We shall also live with [Him].

If we endure, We shall also reign with [Him]. If we deny [Him], He also will deny us.

If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.

Luk 21:33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

Vs.6-8 Who will be there and who will miss out.

1. Those that are thirsty.

So does this mean that any thirsty person will be there? YES NO It depends on what they thirst for.

Only those who thirst after God will able to drink from His fountain.

2. Not the up and comers but the over-comers, will be there.

This is the person who overcomes the temptations of this world and clings to the promises of God.

There is a long list of those who will not be there. Let’s see who they are.

a. The fearful or the cowardly won’t be there.

This is the person who is afraid to give up or let go of this world. The person who is afraid to confess Jesus, because of what it might cost them.

Mat 10:32-33 "Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.

But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.

Rom 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

b. The unbelieving won’t be there.

Jhn 3:18 "He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Jhn 8:24 Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am [He], you will die in your sins."

Jhn 10:26 But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you.

Jud 1:5 But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.

c. The abominable or those who are polluted.

These are the people who refuse to separate themselves from the pleasures, the possessions and the lust of this world.

Luk 21:34-36 "But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly.

For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth.

Watch therefore, and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man."

2Cr 6:17-18 Therefore "Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you."

"I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the LORD Almighty."

Titus 2:12-13 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age,

looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,

James 4:1-4 What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Isn’t it the whole army of evil desires at war within you?

You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous for what others have, and you can’t possess it, so you fight and quarrel to take it away from them. And yet the reason you don’t have what you want is that you don’t ask God for it.

And even when you do ask, you don’t get it because your whole motive is wrong--you want only what will give you pleasure.

**You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with this world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again, that if your aim is to enjoy this world, you can’t be a friend of God.**

d. There won’t be any murderers there.

Exd 20:13 "You shall not murder.

Which is worse; to kill an unborn child, through abortion or to blow up an abortion clinic just to stop the doctor from killing anymore babies? Sure you may stop the doctor but what about those nurses? What about those, pregnant women? What about those unborn babies, in the building?

We can justify murder by saying that we are serving God and it is still murder Read Ex. 20: 13 again.

**Here’s a kicker for you**

1John 3:15 [NKJV] Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

1Jo 3:15 [NLT] Anyone who hates another Christian is really a murderer at heart. And you know that murderers don’t have eternal life within them.

e. The whoremongers or the immoral will be missing.

Those who commit all sorts of sexual acts that are opposed to God’s order of things.

The adulterer, those who live an alternate lifestyle [discuss] any kind of sex act that God forbids.

**Here’s another kick in the head**

Mat 5:27-28 "You have heard that the law of Moses says, `Do not commit adultery.’

But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust in his eye has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Rom 1:24-29a Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves,

who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature.

Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

And even as they did not like to retain God in [their] knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting;

being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality…

f. There won’t be any sorcerers there.

These are the people who engage in astrology, witchcraft, devil worship, spiritism, séances, palm reading, fortune telling. In reality, any belief that claims to be able to tell the future or reveal your fate etc.

1Ch 10:13 So Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he had committed against the LORD, because he did not keep the word of the LORD, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance.

Isa 8:19-22 And when they say to you, "Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter," should not a people seek their God? [Should they] [seek] the dead on behalf of the living?

To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, [it is] because [there] [is] no light in them.

They will pass through it hard-pressed and hungry; and it shall happen, when they are hungry, that they will be enraged and curse their king and their God, and look upward.

Then they will look to the earth, and see trouble and darkness, gloom of anguish; and [they will be] driven into darkness.

When we look at the new season for TV, read the newspaper and look at the world around us [even within the church] we can see this taking place…

Mic 5:12-15 I will cut off sorceries from your hand, And you shall have no soothsayers.

Your carved images I will also cut off, And your sacred pillars from your midst; You shall no more worship the work of your hands;

I will pluck your wooden images from your midst; Thus I will destroy your cities.

And I will execute vengeance in anger and fury On the nations that have not heard."

g. There will be no idolaters there.

These are the people who worship idols. It does not matter whether they are made by hand or simply in the mind.

We can have an image of what we think God is like and worship that image of Him instead of the true God and that is idolatry.

1Cr 10:14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.

Gal 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,

idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,

envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told [you] in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

h. The liars will be missing as well.

People that speak falsely. Those who deceive, gossip and spread rumors.

Pro 19:5 A false witness will not go unpunished, And [he who] speaks lies will not escape.

Well, it looks like heaven is going to be a lonely place. If we are to get honest, for just a moment, every one of fit one of these descriptions.

So what do we do? How do we get there?

Pro 19:5 A false witness will not go unpunished, And [he who] speaks lies will not escape.

And if we don’t

Rev 21:8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars [they] shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." Bracket added.
