The Attack Through the First Beast: A Political Ruler
Revelation 13: 1-10
Chapter 13 discusses the terrible rulers that will rise up in the end time, the antichrist and his cohort, the world-wide religious leader who will help the antichrist gain and maintain control over the world. Their rule will be so savage that the Bible calls them beasts and they will launch the most horrific holocaust the world has ever seen. Literally millions of people, all over the world will be murdered during their reign. The murder and evil will so bad that God will not stand for any more. The antichrist will not only bring the world to the brink of disaster but will cross the line and cause absolute destruction of the world as we know it.
Remember, in chapter 12 we were given a glimpse into the spiritual world and what lies behind the evil in the world. We saw the battle that is being fought for the souls of man, as the evil one tries to pull man away from God. The dragon is cast down to the earth and he realizes his time is short. The dragon, Satan, will unleash his anger in the last days like the world has never seen before.
How will he do this? By using a leader who will gain control of the entire world. Who is this person? Let’s look.
v.1 The antichrist is the world leader and he rises up from the sea.
Will the antichrist actually rise up from the ocean or is this another use of a symbol in scripture?
Look at Rev. 17:15. The waters are described as peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues.
The increase of violence, the wars and terrorist activities, the famines, the earthquakes and disease will have the people of the world scrambling for a leader who can offer them help and hope. When the people are the most vulnerable the antichrist will rise up and promise the world the hope they seek. The leaders of the nations will hand over their power to the antichrist.
vs.1 -2 The description of the antichrist.
1. The antichrist will have 7 heads. This means at least two things.
a. The antichrist will have great ability, an unusual genius. The seven in scripture means complete and full. The antichrist will be able to think and react in a way that is more effective than man has ever known. Never in the history of man has there been a man so talented, so intelligent.
b. The seven heads, with ten horns are a reference to the ten nations that he will control. In the beginning there will be ten nations leading the world but the antichrist will take over three, leaving seven. The remaining seven will surrender their governments to his rule. In the end the antichrist will have power over seven heads of state, thereby controlling the world.
2. The antichrist will have 10 horns. This is the same number of horns the devil had. This points to the antichrist as being the embodiment of the devil and his evil.
Horns also mean power. The fact that there are ten horns means there will be a confederated power of 10 nations.
What is one thing that a bull will do with his horn if you get too close?
So horns are also a symbol of these ten nations being not only powerful but they will strike fear in the hearts of all people.
3. The antichrist also has ten crowns on his ten horns.
Crowns mean authority. This tells us that the antichrist will be calling the shots as the ultimate authority of the confederated nations.
4. The antichrist will have ten blasphemous names on his seven heads. This means that his blasphemy against God and God’s people will be complete. Remember what seven means? Complete
a. He will be the abomination of desolation who will stand in the temple of God, in Jerusalem, and blaspheme God.

b. He will be the man of sin, who opposes all religions; all that is called God and that is worshipped.

c. He will speak terrible things against The Most High.
Scripture proof: Dan. 7: 25
d. He will demand that all worship him and his state.
Scripture proof: Rev. 13: 4
5. The antichrist will combine and embody 3 of the world’s most powerful empires. Imagine if you took all the lust for power from each of the three most powerful nations in history and put it one man, this would be the antichrist.
Who could these three empires be? Notice the description given in verse 2.
The antichrist will;
Look like a leopard
Have feet like a bear
Have a mouth like a lion
The antichrist will possess the characteristics of three world powers. He will arise from a fourth and possess the characteristics of that nation as well. What four world empires will be combined in this one man?
We will need to look at Daniel’s vision of the end time in order to see this more clearly. The following chart will show how Daniel’s visions and John’s vision are a perfect match. Both are looking at the end time and the power of the antichrist and his government.

vs.2-3 There are two reasons given in these verses for the dramatic rise in power of the antichrist.
1. The dragon, or as some would say, supernatural powers will be at work.
Who is the dragon in verse two? Barney Puff the magic dragon Satan himself
The dragon will put the antichrist in power and the antichrist will be willing to completely submit to the authority of Satan.
The antichrist will be given over to doing all kinds of evil, but his kind of evil will be different from any the world has ever known.
When we do evil, it is usually done on a personal and small scale. World leaders who are evil will keep it to a national level. The worst examples you can think of in history will not compare to the evil launched by the antichrist. His evil will be world - wide.
Notice what Satan will do for the antichrist.
a. Satan will give his own power to the antichrist.
- He will give him his inner strength, his energy and his spirit.
- He will give him his personality.
- He will give him his ability to persuade and to influence other.
b. Satan will give the antichrist his seat or his throne. Look at Matthew 4:8-10 and see if you can figure out whom else Satan offered this very same seat to. Who was the one offered this position? Jesus
c. When Satan gives the antichrist his own authority the antichrist will be

2. The antichrist will be healed from a mortal wound. This must be important because it is mentioned three times in this chapter and also others. See Rev. 13: 3, 12, 14 * Rev. 17: 8, 11
There are three possible interpretations of this.
a. The death of the beast could refer to the death of the political power of the Roman Empire. Remember, the Roman Empire was the beast with the feet of iron and clay mixed together. The iron empire could not remain in power since it had clay mixed in it and was doomed to crumble and be divided. The iron, however, continues on. In other words the traits of the Roman Empire continue in the world and during the end time, the Roman Empire will be revived and the spirit of Rome will dominate the world once more.
b. The antichrist will actually be the return of some world leader who lived in the past.
* Many have turned this verse around and distorted it for years.
* Some say this is speaking of the restoration of some dead dictator or political person that died from a head wound.
* Some say that no one has access to the sixth floor of the hospital where President Kennedy died and it is referring to him.
* Some say that a former Catholic Pope will be the antichrist, or the Catholic Church is the antichrist.
* Some say this is speaking of Mussolini, Stalin, Hitler or possibly Nero.
* Some say that Satan or the dragon will revive this person, the antichrist from the dead.
* He does not nor has he been given the power to raise folks from the dead only Jesus has that power.
* This is likely speaking of a fake death and resurrection enacted by the antichrist.
* Everything the devil and the antichrist is and does is a lie and they try to duplicate the original.
* Whatever God does Satan says “I can do better“.
* People in the world will be astonished at this act of deception of the antichrist and follow him.
c. The mortal wound will be from an assassination attempt early in his rule. The false prophet [the second beast] performs a miracle of healing and raises the antichrist from the dead. The false prophet will have some of the most unusual power the world has ever seen. Scripture even tells us that he will do some powerful stuff,
look at Rev. 13: 14 My question is would God give up His power over life and death to the false prophet, or will the resurrection be just another cheap trick from Satan? We know that Satan tries to copy everything God does, so is this just smoke and mirrors?
.Now let me throw a stick in your spokes right here. The antichrist is going to rule over the final government of the earth. Man’s dream of a one world government has become a reality but the government will have a leader, a man who sits on the throne. Mr. President, your highness the king; what ever the world wants to call him.
The Bible makes it clear and the Bible makes it plain that the antichrist will be thrown into the lake of fire.
* Governments, empires, nations aren’t thrown in to the lake of fire, people are. Rev. 19: 20
* The antichrist is said to be a man. 2Th. 2: 3
* The antichrist will stand in the temple of God in Jerusalem and proclaim to be God. A nation can’t do this.

We could go on all night with this subject but understand this. The antichrist will be a man, not just some revived government. The great empires of the past will be revived and combined into one world power, but there will be one leader; chosen by Satan to sit on the throne.
vs. 4-8 There are nine methods the antichrist will use to secure the governments of the world.
1. The antichrist will have no problem taking over because of the ungodly lifestyle of the people.
What does it say in verse 4 about the people who live in the end time?
—They lived godly and pure lives —They worshipped the dragon
This is not talking about what we call Satan worship. In the last days people will become more and more worldly, sinful, evil and ungodly.

2. The antichrist will secure power by his personal ability and charm. Look at verses 4b “who is like this guy?” When this verse says that they “worship the beast” it means that they give their loyalty and allegiance to him.
The antichrist will…
* be full of knowledge
* have a magnetic personality
* be a wonder to behold
We have to remember what is happening in the world at this time is utter chaos. There will be disaster after disaster, famine, earthquakes. Wars will be increasing and there will be many rumors of war all around the world. Things like terrorist attacks are common; an increase in drug activity and immorality will be out of hand. The world is going to be anything but pleasant, for any who remain.
We can see, even today, the world is moving in this direction. The morality of society is beginning to crumble and even the world leaders recognize the fact that they are unable to stop the onrush of lawlessness in their nation. So somewhere in the future, when a certain leader comes upon the scene, and he seems to have all the answers to the problems of the world, people will flock to him. They will force their government leader to listen to and follow this man. According to Revelation 13: 3 the entire world will wonder at, be amazed with and admire the beast.
3. The antichrist will secure power by military and economic strength.
When the antichrist first comes on the scene, he will conquer three nations and completely absorb them into his. After this happens seven other nations will, peacefully, surrender to the antichrist. The governments that he will rule over will be some of the most powerful and richest in the world.
Dan. 7: 8
The antichrist will possibly have, in his possession, the most powerful military machine in the world. And people will know it, so nation after nation will surrender to his authority.
* Other nations will fear him. Rev. 13: 4
* He will control huge amounts of wealth. Dan. 11: 38, 43
* He will have the final say in who rules where and how. Rev. 17: 12-17 * Dan. 11: 39 These rulers will be nothing more than pawns in hand of the master manipulator.
4. The antichrist will secure his power through persuasion and blasphemy. His speech will be so eloquent that he could persuade a zebra to give up his stripes.
He will offer hope to a hopeless world.
He will bring peace to war torn nations.
He will appear to be the savior of all mankind.

He will possess the military power and the wealth to solve most of the problems the world is facing. 1thing he can’t offer is salvation.
Many will say, “He’s my kind of guy” “this is the kind of leader we need”
He may look like the greatest thing since banana pudding, but don’t forget, this is nothing more than a smoke screen. The antichrist is simply setting the world up for the biggest blindside ever known to man.
5. The antichrist will offer the world peace and prosperity for 3 ½ years. Rev. 13: 5b
6. The antichrist will secure power through atheism and humanism. He will reject God completely and he will openly blaspheme God. He will do it in the most famous of all religious places, the Jewish temple, which is in the most famous religious city, Jerusalem.

7. The antichrist will secure power through religious persecution.

8. The antichrist will secure power by conquering many nations. How can he gain authority over every nation?
Some say he will conquer with military might but most likely most will simply hand over their seat of authority.

9. The antichrist will secure power through imperial worship.
All of the ungodly, who remain will come together and offer their allegiance to the antichrist. The antichrist will bring back the same thing the old Roman Empire had: the worship of the state. Every citizen of the world will be required to give their first loyalty to the state. They may even be allowed to worship their own gods, as long as they remember who comes first and that is the state or the antichrist.

vs. 8-10 There will be some who refuse to worship the antichrist. Who are these?
The adversaries of the antichrist will be the true believers who live through the great tribulation.
It is possible to be a believer and support your government 100% True False Not sure
Think about our nation and how many true believers have given their lives for the freedom we know. What’s the difference in what we now see and what will be seen in the end time?
Now we worship God and support our nation. In the end time you will be forced to worship the state.
Notice four things about the believers or the adversaries of the antichrist.
1. They are secure in the Lamb’s book of life.
2. They are the ones who hear the message to repent and come to Christ.
3. They accept God’s will; even if it means captivity…Don’t defend the faith with violence.
4. They stand firm and loyal in their faith. It won’t be hard to recognize a true believer in the end time. He will be the one standing fast for Christ even if it cost him/her their lives.
How different is #4 in comparison to many Christians we see today? There will be no such thing as compromise in the end time and that will cost millions to be killed for their faith.
IF YOU WERE GIVEN THE CHOICE TO WORSHIP THE STATE OR DIE FOR YOUR FAITH WHAT WOULD YOU DO? That may not be a hard decision for you today, because we, in the U.S., have never had to deal with the issue. What if you were watching as your pastor and his family died, you mother, your father, your children; everyone you know and loved died for what they believed and you knew that sooner or later you would be found out. Would you go into hiding or just go along with the program? In the end time they will stand proud and strong, who know Jesus Christ and we need to do so even today…

That may not be a hard decision for you today, because we, in the U.S., have never had to deal with the issue. What if you were watching as your pastor and his family died, you mother, your father, your children; everyone you know and loved died for what they believed and you knew that sooner or later you would be found out. Would you go into hiding or just go along with the program? In the end time they will stand proud and strong who know Jesus Christ and we need to do so even today…
