JESUS PRAYS FOR HIS BELIEVING CHURCH (Outline)

EASTER 7 --
John 17:20-26
INTRO: In the verses preceding our text Jesus prays for his disciples (cf. *Gospel). Our text states that Jesus prays for “them”. “Them” refers to Jesus’ disciples. Jesus prays for his disciples. Chapter 17 began with Jesus praying for himself. Here is the very Son of God praying. Jesus is God Himself and considers it vital to take time and pray. Jesus sees the need and finds the time to pray. This is an example for us. One finds comfort in the fact that Jesus now sits on his throne of glory in heaven. Jesus still prays on our behalf. "Because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them" (HEBREWS 7:24,25). Jesus always lives to pray for us.
JESUS PRAYS FOR HIS BELIEVING CHURCH.
I. That is may be united in love.
II. That it may share God’s glory.
I. JESUS PRAYS THAT HIS CHURCH MAY BE UNITED IN LOVE.
A. Verse 20. Jesus prayed for his disciples. Now Jesus changes the attention/direction of his prayer
1. Jesus now prays for those in the future. He prays for those who are yet to believe.
2. Jesus prays for those who will believe because of the apostle’s message, which is God’s word.
B. Jesus prays that the future believers would be united, not in differences, but in God’s love, verse 21a.
1. Jesus desires believers to have the same unity of this Son with his heavenly Father.
2. Jesus uses his unity with his Father to describe the closeness of believers.
C. Verse 21b. Jesus prays for the unity of future believers who believe in the Triune God.
1. Verse 23. This is a powerful prayer on behalf of all believers by the very Son of God.
2. Jesus wants the believers to know and live in that same great love the Father has with his Son.
3. Verse 26. Jesus revealed himself by faith. Through love Jesus lives in the hearts of believers.
D. It is only through love that Jesus lived in this world. It is only through love that Jesus gave up his life for sinners. It is only through love that our wickedness, rebellion and sin have been removed. It is the very self-sacrificing love of Christ, our Savior that unites us. We now know what love is because God first loved us (cf. **second lesson, below). We desperately need God’s love because we are born enemies of God. "Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation" (COLOSSIANS 1:21,22). Jesus has paid the price. Jesus has made us children of God, heirs of eternal life. Not by our choice or merits but by his grace.
E. Now Jesus prays for his believing church. Jesus prays for those who confess him as Savior, for those who confess him as Christ. Believers make confession of faith according to the words of the creeds of the Christian church: Apostles, Nicene, and Athanasian. We confess that we believe in the “holy, Christian church, the communion of saints”. This is the invisible church that includes all believers everywhere who confess and believe in Christ as the Savior, their Savior. This invisible church is united by faith. This holy, Christian church is united in God’s love. "’Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.’ For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, ‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’"(ROMANS 10:11-13). God’s holy, Christian church crosses all denominational lines. God looks at the heart.
F. Those who believe that Christ is their Savior will never be put to shame. We are united by this great love that Christ has for us. We are united in this love of Christ not for ourselves or for our own selfish reasons. We are united by faith and in faith through Christ alone. We are united in Christ to share his joy and love. "Make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves" (PHILIPPIANS 2:2,3). This is love that unites the believing church in service to others.

to be united in love for God and for one another.
II. JESUS PRAYS HIS BELIEVING CHURCH TO SHARE IN GOD’S GLORY.
A. The unity of the Father with the Son, the Son with the disciples, disciples with believers is important.
1. Verse 22. Jesus has shared his glory with the disciples. God’s glory is unlike man’s glory.
2. God’s glory is seen in Jesus’ suffering and death. Jesus prays in the Garden of Gethsemane.
a. Judas comes to betray. b. This betrayal is the time for God’s glory to be revealed.
B. The disciples had also seen Jesus’ glory in his miracles. They saw God’s glory in gospel preaching.
1. Jesus reveals his glory in his sacrifice. Verse 24. Jesus’ crucifixion was for God’s glory.
2. The disciples would eventually see Jesus’ glory in his resurrection (and later, his ascension).
C. The glory of Jesus was his from the very creation of the world.
1. Verse 25. The disciples saw the very glory of God in His Son, Jesus.
2. Jesus opened the disciples’ hearts to see and understand. Jesus was one with the Father.
D. Today you and I see God’s glory. The glory of God is seen all around us in nature. It is very clear to everyone who pays attention to the power of God. Believers also see the glory of God by faith. Believers no longer sit in the dark. This is the glory of God that the world around us tries to cover up or deny. Too often the world puts all of its confidence, hopes, desires, and dreams in the glory that mankind has to offer. This glory of man always falls short and fails the true need of peoples’ souls. As believers the Lord God Almighty has greatly blessed us. "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light" (1 PETER 2:9). Consider all those titles our gracious God uses to describe believers.
E. Now, more than ever, we truly need to not only see God’s glory, know God’s glory, believe in God’s glory, but also clearly, bravely reflect God’s glory. As believers we have lives that are filled with peace and joy and contentment. Let others see these lives of satisfaction. Let others ask why we can be so calm in a world gone wild. Tell others that it is the Lord’s glory that preserves us and calms us. "And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit" (2 CORINTHIANS 3:8). Yes, the very same God who created the heavens and the earth and all things has given each one of us his Holy Spirit.
F. We can reflect God’s glory with patient lives. Humble Christian living also reflects that very glory of the Lord God Almighty. When everyone is so selfish and self-centered we are able to share God’s glory and tell them that their sins are forgiven and God loves them. We can and do show and share God’s glory not on our own – but by and through the power of Christ. Remember that the Lord Jesus himself prays for us. "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me"(GALATIANS 2:20).
CONC.: This is God’s glory to see Jesus, our Savior and live for him because he lived for us. Our world is filled with hatred and terror, fear and trembling. Now is the time to shine with God’s glory. We may not always feel confident in sharing God’s glory, his love. We might not even feel very well equipped for such a task. It is then we are reminded to pray. We are reminded that Jesus is also praying for us. Jesus constantly prays for us to be united in his love. Jesus constantly prays for us to share in God’s glory to show God’s glory to others. We may fall short but the Lord Jesus never does. Our Savior is bold and confident in pleading our case. "After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly" (ACTS 4:31).
