Boasters, Bragging, Pride!
In this sermon outline we see that God does not approve of boasters, braggers and proud look. The Bible teaches us to humble our selves before the Lord. (James 4:10 KJV) Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up. (1 Pet 5:6 KJV) Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: God would have us walk humble before Him.
I. God looks and sees our actions.
1 Sam 2:3 Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out
of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him
actions are weighed.
A. God can change things in our lives.
1 Sam 2:8 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the
beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to
make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the
earth are the LORD’s, and he hath set the world upon them.
B. He can make us a new person out of the old. 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV) Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
C. Look at the Pharisee and Sinner, see which one was justified.
Luke 18:9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in
themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
Luke 18:10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee,
and the other a publican.
Luke 18:11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I
thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners,
unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. .
Luke 18:12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I
possess.
Luke 18:13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so
much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast,
saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
Luke 18:14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather
than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be
abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
1. Works did not do it.
2. He humbled himself and he was justified.
3. By faith we are saved and not by works.
a. Jesus already paid the price for our salvation.
D. Then there was the rich young man.
Matt 19:16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what
good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? .
Matt 19:17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is
none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into
life, keep the commandments. .
Matt 19:18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no
murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not
steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, .
Matt 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven:
and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in
heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be
loosed in heaven. .
Matt 19:20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept
from my youth up: what lack I yet? .
Matt 19:21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell
that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have
treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. .
Matt 19:22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away
sorrowful: for he had great possessions. .
1. Someone once said what if he had done what Jesus asked him to do? He may have become the richest person in the world because God Word declares in (Luke 6:38 KJV) Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
2. The rich man love his riches more than the Lord.
E. Paul was someone who could be proud but look what he said.
Phil 3:4 Though I might also have confidence in the flesh. If any other
man thinketh that he hath whereof he might trust in the flesh,
I more: Phil 3:5 Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; Phil 3:6 Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. Phil 3:7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Phil 3:8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, Phil 3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: Phil 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;.
1. Paul counted all his accomplishments as ’dung’.
2. He humbled himself so that he might win Christ.
II. We should always give God the Glory and credit for everything.
Ps 149:6 Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged
sword in their hand;
A. Our mouths should be filled with His praise.
B. The Word the two-edged sward should be in our hands.
1. This is living and walking in His Word. Doing His Will.
2. We need to receive His salvation and obey His Word.
Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit,
which is the word of God:
C. The Word will help us examine our hearts.
Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than
any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of
soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a
discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. .
C. We need the Word in our hearts and even in our mouths if we will truly walk with a humble spirit before the Lord.
Rom 10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth,
and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
III. God knows everything about us and hears every word we speak.
1 Sam 2:3 Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out
of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him
actions are weighed.
A. We walk in faith but we need to show our faith by our works.
(James 2:18 KJV) Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works.
