A false view of worship
Text: Gen. 22:1-19
Intro: Tell what most people think worship is.
If you want to know the true meaning of a word go to the first time it is used in the bible. ( Mark 5 Different from Gen. 22)
Verse 1 says after these things- what things?
To know what true worship is you must know about Abrams life before this.
1. God called him away from his family and all that he knew.
2. He goes to Egypt to avoid a famine.( God called him and then things dried up, Satan will fight)
3.He lies to Pharaoh about his wife.
4.He goes back to Canaan.
5. He has a falling out with a family member( Lot) this aint never happened to any of us.
6. God gives him a promise of blessing. Gen 13:14-18
7. Lot is taken captive by the enemy, (this aint never happened to us.)
8.Abram goes and gets Lot.
9. The King Melchizedek give him a blessing.
10. He refused to take anything the king os Sodom tried to give him.( Children of God don’t need to take worldly things).
11.Gen. 15 God promises a great blessing.
12.The problem with Sara and Hagar.
13.Ishmael is born
14.God gives the promise of Isaac.
15. Angels come and tell Sarah is going to have a child.
16. He finds out that Sodom will be destroyed.
17.Isaac is born, Ishmael is sent away.
( Isaac type of spirit- Ishmael type of flesh)
WHEN THE FLESH IS TAKEN CARE OF THE BLESSINGS COME.
AFTER ALL THE THINGS IN HIS LIFE HE FINALLY GOT THE BLESSING HE HAD BEEN LOOKING FOR.
GOD DID TEMPT- TEST
1. TO WORSHIP GOD YOU MUST LISTEN TO GOD. VS.1
WHY DON’T MOST PEOPLE LISTEN TO GOD?
A) They cant hear him.
John 12
47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.
The flesh will keep us from hearing God.
Abraham sent Ishmael away a type of the flesh.
WE CAN NOT WORSHIP IN THE FLESH.
WE CAN JUMP AND SAY AMEN IN THE FLESH BUT NOT WORSHIP.
There is a difference.
Praise- to give glory
Rejoice-to be "cheer"ful,
Worship- a primitive root; to depress, i.e. prostrate (especially reflexive, in homage to royalty or God):--bow (self) down, crouch, fall down (flat), humbly beseech, do (make) obeisance, do reverence, make to stoop, worship.
I WANT TO HEAR GOD WHEN HE TALKS TO ME SO THAT I CAN WORSHIP HIM LIKE HE WANTS ME TOO.
2. YOU MUST BE OBEDIENT TO GOD. Vs 2&3
Abraham did not say “ tell me that one more time”
“ you want me to do what”
In that day people were doing human sacrifices.
GOD HAD NOT GIVEN THE LAW YET SO ABRAHAM DID NOT KNOW THAT GOD WAS GOING TO STOP HIM.
1Sa 15:22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
Joh 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
1Jo 2:5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
1Jo 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
DON” TELL ME YOU WORSHIP GOD AND DON’T KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS.
THERE IS A LOT MORE THAN THE TEN MOST PEOPLE THINK OF.
CHURCH ATTENDANCE, TITHES, GOSSIP, BACKBITTING,
TO TRULY WORSHIP WE MUST OBEY.
ABRAHAM NEVER QUESTIONED GOD.
HOW MANY TIMES HAVE WE QUESTIONED GOD?
3.IT TAKES WORK TO WORSHIP. VS3
A) he chopped the wood.
Why not wait until you get there to get the wood?
YOU NEED TO BE READY TO WORSHIP BEFORE YOU GET THERE.
ABRAHAM DID NOT KNOW WHERE THERE WAS!
BUT HE KNEW WHEN HE GOT THERE HE WAS READY FOR WHATEVER GOD HAD IN STORE.
B) IT TAKES TIME TO WORSHIP.
HE WENT FOR THREE DAYS.
SOME COME IN AT 11 O’CLOCK AND WANT GOD TO MOVE RIGHT OFF THE BAT.
IF YOU WOULD HAVE COME TO SUNDAY SCHOOL YOU WOULD HAVE 45 MIN IN PREPARATION TIME FOR GOD TO MOVE.
4. WORSHIP IS ABOUT BEING WILLING TO GIVE UP SOMETHING YOU LOVE.
A) After all it took to get Isaac don’t you know Abraham loved his son?
Ge 22:2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest,
He had another son Ishmael, but not in Gods eyes.
Isaac was the best Abraham had.
GOD WILL NOT SETTLE FOR SECOND BEST FROM YOU AND I.
B) What is it that you love that keeps you from true worship?
** WORSHIP IS ABOUT PROVING TO GOD THAT YOU LOVE HIM MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE IN YOUR LIFE.
Ge 22:12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
5. WORSHIP IS ABOUT YOU AND I TRUSTING GOD MORE THAN OURSELVES.
A) Abraham trusted God so much that if he killed him God would bring him back from the dead.
Ge 22:5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship,
**He knew what God had told him about Isaac.
Ge 21:12 And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
Hebrews 11
17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,
18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
WORSHIP IS ABOUT TRUSTING GOD.
WORSHIP IS NOT ABOUT IF YOU FEEL GOOD.
HAD A GOOD DAY.
GOT A GOOD REPORT FROM THE DOCTOR.
ABRAHAM DID NOT KNOW GOD WAS GOING TO STOP HIM.
B) Worship is knowing God will provide not matter what your circumstance.
Verse 7&8 He never wavered in his faith.
VS. 1-10 PREPARATION FOR WORSHIP- 11-14 TIME FOR WORSHIP.
Ps 29:2 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
Ps 95:6 O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.
Ps 138:2 I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.
WE NEED TO WORSHIP GOD LIKE HE DESERVES.
