Sluggards
Introduction: Man is not born lazy, it is his circumstances that make him lazy. Man basically becomes lazy because of the lifestyle he chooses and because of his circumstances. God hates his children being lazy. The proverbs has some inputs on lazy life. Let us look what the Bible has to say about laziness or sluggards.
How to Identify a Sluggard?
1. Refuses to Work
Proverbs 20:4
4 A sluggard does not plow in season; so at harvest time he looks but finds nothing.
Proverbs 21:25
25 The sluggard’s craving will be the death of him, because his hands refuse to work.
2. Loves excessive Sleep
Proverbs 19:15
15 Laziness brings on deep sleep,
and the shiftless man goes hungry.
3. Unteachable and Careless.
Proverbs 6:6-9
6 Go to the ant, you sluggard;
consider its ways and be wise!
7 It has no commander,
no overseer or ruler,
8 yet it stores its provisions in summer
and gathers its food at harvest.
9 How long will you lie there, you
sluggard?
When will you get up from your sleep?
4. Irritating to others
Proverbs 10:26
26 As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so is a sluggard to those who send him.
5. Too lazy to cook food.
Proverbs 12:27
27 The lazy man does not roast his game, but the diligent man prizes his possessions.
6. Great wasters
Proverbs 18:9
9 One who is slack in his work
is brother to one who destroys.
7. Permits property & Resources to Ruin
Ecclesiastes 10:18
18 If a man is lazy, the rafters sag;
if his hands are idle, the house leaks.
The consequences of being Lazy.
1. Becomes servant to others
Proverbs 12:24
24 Diligent hands will rule,
but laziness ends in slave labor.
2. Life full of troubles.
Proverbs 15:19
19 The way of the sluggard is blocked with thorns, but the path of the upright is a highway.
How are we then to Live?
1. Live wisely
Ephesians 5:15-16
15Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
2. Work with your hands.
1 Thessalonians 4:11-12
11Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, 12so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.
Warning against idleness/laziness.
2 Thessalonians 3:6-15
6In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers, to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching you received from us. 7For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, 8nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. 9We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to make ourselves a model for you to follow. 10For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "If a man will not work, he shall not eat."
11We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies. 12Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat. 13And as for you, brothers, never tire of doing what is right.
14If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of him. Do not associate with him, in order that he may feel ashamed. 15Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.
