Jesus Light of the World Jesse Bennett
John 20:30
1) Last week we talked about moving on from miracles to Jesus, with strong faith.
John had a purpose in writing The Book of John for one reason and I believe he states this in John 20:30 that we might believe in Jesus and have life.
John uses the term sign/for miracles… sign is more than a miracle a sign is a miracle that instructs. A miracle with a message.
Every parable that Jesus gave was a miracle of instruction.
Every miracle that Jesus performed was a parable of teaching.
Now I’m not saying miracles don’t happen, we need to look beyond the miracles and on to Jesus Christ the Light of the world. The King that gives light.
What was the message in these miracles?
1. The miracles were signs that pointed to Jesus last week we talked about when:
A. ++Jesus turned water into wine (Jesus is Gods answer to mans disappointment)
B. +++A nobleman who came to have his son healed. (Jesus is Gods answer to mans doubt)
C. +++ Then there was a man paralyzed waiting by the pool to be healed. (Jesus is Gods answer to mans disability
D. Then there was a time when the crowds were hungry and Jesus took a little boys lunch and Fed 5000 men + women and children (Jesus is Gods answer to mans desire.)
Now we will discover Jesus is the answer to mans darkness.
Now were going to see Jesus heal a man born blind.
Let’s go back to John Chapter 9:1-3.5 (Read)
Truth: spiritual blindness makes beggars of us all.
This man illustrates what a man is like without Jesus, He is spiritually blind.
John begins his gospel and speaks of Jesus in John 1:4 Jesus being the light of the world.
What happened when man sinned?- How did he die (not physically)
When Adam was originally created he was perfect and he was a temple wherein God dwelt. In the garden when Adam sinned he became spiritually blinded and dead to the light of Christ.
When Adam sinned the spiritual life when out of Adam.
When the Lord went out the light
When the light went out the life went out.
The Lord left..He was what? DEPRAVED
When the life went out….he was what? DEAD
When the light went out…….he was what? DARKENDED
And so now man is DEPRAVED DEAD AND DARKENED
Because he doesn’t have the Lord in him anymore…That’s the definition of lost.
You don’t have to be a rapist, murder, or thief to be lost, you just have to be minus GOD!!!
As sons of Adam, we all die without Jesus.
What did Jesus tell nicodemus? (John 3:3) Unless a man be born again he cannot see!!!
He cannot see the kingdom of God.
He might see physical things but blind to spiritual.
Eph 4:18 says of every person---has the understanding darkened.
18Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart
There is more than one kind of Blindness
1. Blindness of the eyes
2. Blindness of the heart.
This man was born blind: the disciples asked a question why is he blind
Jesus said: okay here is an opportunity to teach about being born blind.
Scripture illustrates our depravity:
3Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
By his nature he was born blind:
Now we see he became a beggar:
What did God create Adam and Eve to be?
King and queen of the earth, to have dominion over it, to rule over it.
Man is now he is a blind beggar.
Rev 3:17
17Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked
What a picture of mankind without Jesus Christ.
II. The blind need more than light to see.
John 9:4-7 He need sight… some of you have loved ones that are lost so listen!!!
(Tell story of working in the underground mine)
Men need more that light to be saved they need sight to be saved.
It can be bright as day but without sight you are still darkened.
Men need more that light to be saved they need sight II Cor 4:3-4 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: 4In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them
Satin can’t put out the light so he tries to take away a person sight… it takes more than light to see he needs sight.. It can be daylight outside but a blind person can’t see….
You can’t argue, preach or teach someone into heaven!!!
They need the Holy Spirit to give them sight…that’s why an unsaved person needs prayer…
I can preach truth but only the Holy Spirit can impart truth!!!
We need to pray!!!
You must let your light shine and pray they see.
Vs 6 and 7 Jesus spits in the clay and makes mud and anoints the mans eyes and tells him to wash in the pool of Siloam (it means sent)
Why did Jesus tell him to go there? Go to Chapter 8:12 then 8:23 then 8:26 He that sent me is true (with me)
Chapter 9:4 Sent me 9:7 pool called sent..
THIS POOL REPRESENTS JESUS; THE ONE SENT FROM THE FATHER TO GIVE LIGHT TO THE WORLD!
Opened eyes, Eyes once opened must learn to see…
9:35—37
Jesus knew he had been thrown out of the temple.
The Pharisees threw him out (they got after him) and Jesus sought him out.
Jesus is the light of the world and they are the Blight of the World…
Religion without Jesus is a blight!!!
Look at the mans testimony “once I was blind and now I see”
Now this man can see. Now Jesus works with this person so he can have a saving faith.
The man didn’t know who Jesus was just that he could see…
This man had honest ignorance..
So Jesus starts to instruct him… Guiding him in the truth.
PROGRESSIN OF THE MAN (growing faith) NOTICE THE PROGRESSION
1) HE SAID vs 10-11“A MAN PUT MUD ON MY EYES” At this point just a man
2) VS 17 “NOW MORE THAN A MAN -BUT A PROPHET” Now Jesus is a Prophet
3) Vs 31 “NOW HE IS A MAN SENT OF GOD” Now he’s got a little more, sent from God
BUT HE’S STILL NOT THERE YET…
LOOK IN VS 35-38 HE NOW GETS A SAVING FAITH…HE WORSHIPS JESUS….
His eyes are opened now and learning to see!!!
That’s how a person is saved…hearing-accepting and acknowledging
Proverbs 4:18 18But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.
We are born blind beggars and God opens our eyes.
We must confess our need to see>>>Vs 39… There are none so blind as thoughs who refuse to see…
Mans greatest need is to see there spiritual blindness…
Man needs to glorify God
Light refused makes a man more dark..
No greater sin than to refuse the light…now a man is judged for the disease of sin but also FOR refusing the cure…
What does this miracle show “JESUS IS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD”
Step into the light and come to Jesus..
Are you saying this morning “LORD I’M IN DARKNESS…I NEED YOU….PRAY THAT GOD WILL OPEN YOUR EYES!!!!
