Have Thine Own Way, Lord
Acts 9:6
Intro
At the beginning of his Christian pilgrimage, Saul who was to become Paul, asked, “Lord, what will you have me to do?” This question was the expression of the surrender of his heart to the complete sovereignty of Jesus Christ. He came to the end of his journey with the great consciousness that he had let the Lord have his way in his life.
Adeladie A. Pollard expressed the sentiments of the apostle Paul in the musical prayer that I have selected for us tonight to learn. So let’s sing together “Have Thine Own Way, Lord.”
I. Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!” (stanza 1)
a. “Mold me (Jer. 18:3)
“Then I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was, making something on the wheel.”
b. Make me” (Jer. 18:4)
“But the vessel that he was making of clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter; so he remade it into another vessel, as it pleased the potter to make.
II. Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!” (stanza 2)
a. “Search me and try me” (Ps. 139:23-24)
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there by any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.”
b. “Whiter than snow, Lord, wash me just now” (Isa. 1:18)
“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says, the Lord, though your sins are as scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they will be like wool.
III. Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!” (stanza 3)
a. “Wounded and weary, help me, I pray” (Luke 4:18)
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor, He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed”
b. “Touch me and heal me” (Mark 1:40-41)
“And a leper came to Jesus, beseeching Him and falling on his knees before Him, and saying, “If You are willing, You can make me clean.” Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.”
IV. Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way!” (stanza 4)
a. “Hold o’er my being absolute sway” (Phil. 2:9-11)
“And for this reason, god highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
b. “Fill with Thy Spirit till all shall see Christ only, always living in me” (Gal. 5:22-24)
• The fruit of the spirit, that is what the world will see, when we live totally for Christ.
Closing
When the vessel was marred in the hand of the potter, Jeremiah saw him crush it and make another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. If you have failed to cooperate with the divine Potter, it is not too late for you to be made into a useful vessel if you will yield to him and let His will be your will in all ways. Let’s close tonight by singing this prayer once again.
