Flexing to Adjust to What Is

(Acts 6:1-7)

1. This was in Friday’s news:

LAGOS (Reuters) – A father took his 20-year old son to an Islamic court in northern Nigeria for idleness, asking that he be sent to prison for refusing to engage in productive activities, state news agency NAN said Friday.

"He is not listening to words and he is bringing shame to my family. I am tired of his nefarious deeds. Please put this boy in prison so that I can be free," Sama’ila Tahir, a market trader in the northeastern town of Bauchi, was quoted as saying.

Tahir told the court that his son had refused to go to school and accused him of belonging to a criminal gang.

The court sentenced the son to six months in prison and 30 strokes of the cane -- which were immediately administered on the premises -- for being disobedient to his parents, NAN said.

2. The Kingdom of God does not quite work this way. We cannot force people to serve, for it is the ministry of the Spirit to make people willing.

3. But sometimes willing people wait in the wings because churches are not organized enough to use them. The need is there, the solution is there, but no one connects the solution to the need because connecting takes change and innovation.

I. Changing Circumstances Create PROBLEMS (1)

The idea of charity and giving to the responsibly needy without receiving in return comes to us from Judaism, and the church was very much this way; Roman and Greek cultures valued giving only with strings attached -- reciprocation, "owing a favor"

The setting: The church had grown to several thousand people; in that number were widows; a certain percentage of widows had no family in the area to care for them, so the church organized to feed them. How many? Perhaps 50 would be a good guess?

In I Timothy 5, Paul makes a big distinction of responsibility the church has toward widows who have family in the area who are helping them and widows who have no one to depend upon.

In our society, we are so afraid of "discrimination" that we often put people in the same category: a widow is a widow. As a result, the truly destitute widows receive less attention than they should while the widows with family receive more than they need. These widows were of the destitute category.

But there is a form of discrimination that is not based upon circumstances, but upon cultural background. The Grecian or Hellenistic Jews were the Jews whose native language was Greek. Many of them were Jews of the Dispersion who had been raised outside of Israel in places like Iraq, Iran, Italy, and Greece.

These widows may have moved to Israel with their husbands, because many Jews wanted to die in the holy land. Their husbands died first, and they were left widows. Most of them would have had enough wealth to get by, but some did not. Or perhaps they lived longer than anticipated.

The Hebraic Jews were from the Israel and probably spoke middle Hebrew, a Hebrew that incorporated some Aramaic phrases and words. This group was culturally related to the Apostles, who were all Hebraic Jews.

The Apostles had a lot on their plate, but they probably saw to it that "meals on wheels" were delivered to these widows in a piece-meal fashion. This was really not their realm, but leaders often end up doing odds and ends that fall between the cracks, and they usually don’t do them very well. As a result, the Hebrew widows probably knew the apostles and their families, while the widows who did not have roots in Israel did not. There was no intentional slight, but you are more likely to note the needs of those you know in contrast to those you do not.

A. The church needed better ORGANIZATION

1. The balance between freedom and organization is subjective. The more organization, the less freedom

2. Some people are spooked by organization, some by freedom

3. But sometimes the need for more organization is obvious; it is time.

B. Being overlooked does not mean being SLIGHTED

1. People tend to emotionalize what happens or does not happen

2. Being overlooked may feel like, "nobody cares," but it is often the result of people being busy or absorbed elsewhere…

3. All of us want to be somebody, and we are deathly afraid of being nobody… and conflict comes when we feel like others view us as nobodies…

4. Remember, the vast majority of conflicts are about respect…

C. When people feel slighted, they COMPLAIN

1. Bringing up an issue that needs to be addressed is often right and good

2. γογγυσμοσ though, means a murmuring, used in the Greek translation of the OT for the murmuring of the children of Israel in the wilderness.

3. Not a "we have a problem to address" complaint, which is good, but playing the role of a martyr and victim and stirring up support and affirmation as to how one has been cheated and the "poor little old me" mentality is the entrenched mentality of many people 2,000 years ago and many people today.

4. It is hard to leave ego out of church life, but we have to accept the reality that ego -- in its various manifestations -- is an issue for each of us.

Application: We too, in our personal lives have to address changing times and the problems they bring. We might find ourselves single again -- not by choice; our kids may choose not to walk with the Lord; our job might be gone; we might never find that ’right person;’ we might have to move or surrender our independence because of health issues. Even our happy routines on earth do not last forever.

II. Good Leaders Are Pro-Active (2-4)

A. Apostles came up with a PLAN (2a)

1. Before they got everyone together, they had a plan to offer

2. To my way of thinking, a leader is an influential person who takes initiative and offers a plan

3. They create a "mechanism," a system or procedure to address problems…

4. Non-leaders talk without resolution and then keep recycling the process…

5. I have been on a number of committees and boards outside our church, and I have often experienced a sort of token whining without resolution… nobody really intends to address matters, but everybody pretends that someone will…

B. They sold the plan to the PEOPLE (2b)

1. Immature leaders may think they are in authority, that they can do as they please; sometimes newlywed husbands think this…

2. But the church is a family, and every believer is a priest; there is no caste system

3. It takes rapport with the people, not coercion, to get things done

4. Most people must buy into the plan, or it will flop

C. They kept the WORD front and center (2c)

1. It takes real determination to keep the Word of God central in a church’s ministry; like our daily quiet times, it can be so easy to postpone those times because of the "tyranny of the urgent," so pastors and leaders are asked to participate in everything and anything, thus eliminating study time…

2. Pastoral ministry is like that; a pastor can aim to please people or to prioritize based upon the Word of God

D. They set up CRITERIA for the congregation to choose (3)

E. Not DELEGATION, but helping people have a MINISTRY (4)

Application: We too have a choice: we can face life passively or bravely. We can make the Bible our obsession, or we can choose to build upon other foundations. We can sit by while others do the work of the Kingdom and amass treasures in heaven, or we can join in based upon who we are.

III. New LAYERS of Ministry Address Current Issues (5-7)

A. We now have the Twelve and the SEVEN (5)

• Interestingly, these 7 were all Grecian Jews.

• Were these the first deacons?

• The infinitive form of "deacon" διακονειν is used in verse 2, "to wait" or "serve" on tables

B. The Apostles indicate their BLESSING (6)

• Changes of structure can be disconcerting, even early on

• It is important for leaders to reassure the flock during times of change

C. The Word spread and many PRIESTS believed (7)

1. Many priests came to believe in Jesus. There were thousands of descendents of Aaron among the Jews; they were all priests by birth. Today we would recognize these descendents by their last names, Cohen, Cohan, Conn, or Kahn.

2. When church leaders address problems that arise by taking them seriously and coming up with a popular solution, this adds to the morale and enthusiasm of a church…

3. When Christians are enthused, churches grow and lost people are brought into the fold

4. I hope you feel like you can take pride in our church. We want this to be a church family that you can be proud of.

CONCLUSION

1. Our church, nation, and world have a lot of problems to face.

2. The economic downturn is among the ones on most minds right now.

3. We have changing moral values, the deterioration of the family, the tensions of growing ethnic and religious diversity.

4. The early church was in the "adaption" mode; so are we. But we need to be ready with a quick "response time." We live in changing times, and we need to constantly ponder how to address modern life while never sliding off the solid rock of God’s Word.
