Summary: A message on what our nation is facing if we do not turn to God in repentance.

THE JUDGMENT OF GOD

Nahum 1:1-15

INTRO: We hear a lot of talk today about how God is not a God of anger, or that He wouldn’t let some men go to Hell, while He let others go to Heaven.

Today, we will examine the scriptures to see what they say concerning the wrath of God.

I. HISTORY OF NINEVEH.

A. Nineveh was a God-fearing city.

1. Jonah preached to Nineveh and the city was converted.

2. For 100 years Nineveh was the most religious city in

all of Asia.

a. The great cities of the United States have had

the great evangelists to preach to them just as

Jonah preached to Nineveh.

i.e. D. L. Moody, Billy Sunday, Billy Graham.

b. The United States used to be the religious

country of the world.

B. During the time of Nahum.

1. Nineveh turned from God.

2. She was the lowest of all the cities in Asia (Romans

1:21-23).

a. The United States cities are rapidly taking

Nineveh’s place as the lowest morally city ever.

b. The United States are following in her footsteps.

C. Nahum preached the destruction 100 years before

Nineveh was destroyed.

1. Not a call to repentance, but:

2. An unrelieved warning of Judgment.

a. There is no remedy for Apostasy.

b. Just utter judgment.

c. Apostasy is punished by catastrophic destruction.

3. God is speaking to the cities today.

a. Maybe we have 100 years.

b. Maybe we have less.

II. GOD IS A GOD OF ANGER.

A. Why do people today disbelieve in God’s judgment?

1. The Lord is slow to anger.

a. Because of this, people don’t think He will judge

us.

b. His anger will be shown during judgment time.

B. He is a God of power.

1. We can see His power in nature all around us.

a. In the temperature extremes.

b. In the parting of the Red Sea.

2. He has all power to rule the universe.

C. He is a jealous God.

1. He will not acquit the wicked.

a. The scriptures declare this (v. 3).

b. All of our disbelieving will not make it not true.

III. GOD IS A GOD OF LOVE.

A. He provides for His own.

1. He promised us a place in His kingdom.

a. If we love Him, and:

b. Keep His Commandments.

CONC: We all know the story of how Nineveh was overthrown by a vast army

and destroyed. Our own century is following the same past that Nineveh followed before she fell.

If our nation doesn’t turn from her ways, she too, will fall just as Nineveh did.

The only way our country can turn from her ways is for her people to repent of their ways and return to God.
