HONOR AND HONORING MOTHERS
INTRO: WHY GOD MADE MOMS:
Answers given by 2nd grade school children:
Why did God make mothers?
1. She’s the only one who knows where the scotch tape is.
2. Mostly to clean the house.
3. To help us out of there when we were getting born.
How did God make mothers?
1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us.
2. Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring.
3. God made my Mom just the same like he made me. He just used bigger parts.
What ingredients are mothers made of?
1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in the world and one dab of mean.
2. They had to get their start from men’s bones. Then they mostly use string, I think.
What did mom need to know about dad before she married him?
1. His last name.
2. She had to know his background. Like is he a crook? Does he get drunk on beer?
3. Does he make at least $800 a year? Did he say NO to drugs and YES to chores?
KEY TEXT:
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise: that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” (Ephesians 6:1-3).
HUMOUR: A little boy forgot his lines in a Sunday school presentation. His mother was in the front row to prompt him. She gestured and formed the words silently with her lips, but it did not help. Her son’s memory was blank. Finally, she leaned forward and whispered the cue, "I am the light of the world." The child beamed and with great feeling and a loud clear voice said, "My mother is the light of the world."
THE BIG IDEA: God wants us to give honour to whom honour is due, and specifically we are going to look at the importance of honouring our mothers. When we honour those God has placed in authority over our lives, we attract God’s favour and blessing.
• This morning, we want to honour and celebrate the gift God has given us in MOTHERS
I. WHAT IS HONOUR?
• Honour is defined as: “value, appreciate, esteem, respect, regard favourably. To value, to see as weighty and precious.” (John Bevere, Honor’s Reward).
• We are living in day and age when authority is no longer honoured. (media influence)
• God’s Word, however, commands us to give honour where honour is due (Rom. 13:7).
II. WHO ARE WE TO HONOUR?
1. PARENTS: “Honour your father and mother.” (Eph. 6:2).
This is the first authority we are placed under. Being attacked in the media!
2. CIVIL OR GOVERNMENT LEADERS: “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God.” (Romans 13:1). (Along with this we include police officers).
STORY: Of when we went to Parliament Hill in Ottawa for The Cry prayer meeting two summers ago. Faytene Kryskow’s ministry honours elected officials.
3. EMPLOYERS: First Timothy 6:1. (Along with this we include coaches & teachers).
STORY: The challenge coaching my soccer team = disrespect for the referees.
4. CHURCH LEADERS: “Honor those who are your leaders in the Lord’s work. They work hard among you and warn you against all that is wrong. Think highly of them and give them your wholehearted love because of their work.” (1 Thess. 5:12-13).
QUOTE: “Submission to authority is an aspect of true honour. To say we honour authority, yet refrain from submission and obedience to it, is to deceive ourselves.” (John Bevere).
• If we want our children to honour authority, are we modeling it to them in our homes?
III. WHY IS HONOUR IMPORTANT?
“Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with promise: that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.” (Ephesians 6:2-3).
• There is a blessing and a reward that comes from honour.
TEXT: “1 Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him. 2 And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, "Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands! 3 Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?" And they were offended at Him. 4 But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house." 5 Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them” (Mark 6:1-5).
• Because the people did not honor Jesus, they did not receive a blessing!
“He who honours you honours Me, and he who honours Me honours Him who sent Me. He who honours a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward.” (Matt. 10:40-41).
PERSONAL TESTIMONY: In my ministry as a youth pastor, I found that I received honour more from people from other countries – Chinese Church, Spanish Church and Filipino Bible Camp. We saw miracles there because of the honour that they gave the position of pastor. We don’t see that as much in our North American culture.
THE STORY OF HANNAH:
• Open – give background of the first 8 verses…
“9 So Hannah arose after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the tabernacle of the Lord. 10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the Lord and wept in anguish. 11 Then she made a vow and said, "O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head." 12 And it happened, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli watched her mouth. 13 Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk. 14 So Eli said to her, "How long will you be drunk? Put your wine away from you!" 15 And Hannah answered and said, "No, my lord, I am a woman of sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor intoxicating drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord. 16 Do not consider your maidservant a wicked woman, for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief I have spoken until now." 17 Then Eli answered and said, "Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him.” (1 Samuel 1:9-17).
APPLICATION: HOW DO WE HONOUR OUR MOTHERS?
1. Tell them how much you appreciate them!
2. Do nice things for them – helping out around the house!
3. Honour them – when they ask you to do something, do it! Do it without being asked!
CHALLENGE: To all to honor their mothers and do something special to recognize them!
