Revelation 2:1-7
Ephesus: The Cold Church
As John pens these words under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, you will discover several noteworthy items in chapters two and three. First, you will discover that Jesus identifies Himself to the church. He then records their accomplishments and states their deficiencies. But, He always provides a remedy for their defects. Finally, Jesus gives them a word of encouragement to stay strong in Him!
Jesus is the Sovereign Savior 1
You will find that nothing escapes His attention! The word angel is aggelos that means a messenger, envoy, one who is sent, an angel, a messenger from God. This messenger is sent from God to shepherd His flock and prepare them for eternity with Him!
He has a great affection for you. He loves YOU!
He also has great authority over you. (he holds) You belong to Him. Remember that the church is the called out ones.
And He is active among you. Jesus invites you to join Him in what He is doing.
Jesus is the Slighted Savior 2-4a
Expect His candor. Jesus is very open, honest and knowledgeable. He knows oida your exertion.
Because He knows, listen to His commendation. There were five elements they excelled in: their work & labor, endurance, hatred of evil, testing of doctrine, and resiliency. Ephesus was a church that worked! But, Jesus had a great concern. He stated “I have this against you…” They had forsaken their first love. Something was going to change.
Jesus is the Steadfast Savior 4-7
Jesus encourages us to remember. Go back to the place of your salvation. Recall what you were like before your new birth. Consider the change in your life and what a difference it has made.
As you do that, Jesus then wants you to repent. This is a change of the mind, heart, and will. Seek God’s forgiveness.
Finally, He wants you to return to your passionate love! Continue what you are doing with the right motive in loving Him!
