Summary: Here is the simple outline: It took Christ, a great need, a praying mother, odedient servants, and someone to taste the wine!

"Five Ingredients of the First Miracle"

What is a miracle?

Let me suggest this definition for you:

A miracle is when God intervenes to reverse the curse that caused the natural downward flow of death to all things.

God is the one who has placed the natural order of things. God can use his "higher power" to overturn that natural order. The natural orders of all things, is death. Christ came to bring us resurrection and life. We shall see this principle applied in the very first miracle.

Five ingredients of the first miracle: There would not have been a miracle unless:

1. Jesus has been invited.

(John 2:1 KJV) And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:

(John 2:2 KJV) And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.

If Christ had not been invited, there would have been no miracle!

2. A great need.

(John 2:3 KJV) And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

The great need of more wine became the gateway of the miracle. If we never had a need in our life, we would not see our great need for the God of miracles.

3. A praying mother.

(John 2:3 KJV) And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

Notice how brief and exact was the prayer of Mary. We do not need to cry loud long prayers in order that God might respond to us. Mary simply brought to the attention of Christ, "They have no wine."

4. Obedient Servants.

(John 2:5 KJV) His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

Without the servants to bear the water, the miracle would not have occurred. Before God can bless us with grace, we have got to become as willing humble obedient servants.

5. The wine had to be tasted.

(John 2:9 KJV) When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,

I do not believe that the water became wine until the governors lips were put to the mouth of the cup. God expects us to walk by faith.

Conclusion:

When Moses came to Pharaoh with his miracles, the miracles were those of death. Moses represented the law. The law could only bring about the conclusion of death. Christ came with grace, providing life. Moses turned the water of the Nile River into blood, making it undrinkable. Christ turned the water into wine.

May we celebrate the new life miracles that we have in Christ. The life changing miracle of all is that of the salvation of a soul. Through Christ and his grace, we can take the miracle of salvation to all of those who would receive it!
