INTRODUCTION
Famous Levites in scripture - Aaron (Exodus 4:14) & Barnabas (Acts 4:36). They were descendants of the tribe of Levi and were assistants to the priests.
Four words spring to mind in connection with Levites:
1. PRACTICAL
Their work was practical rather than spiritual.
OT Levites = NT deacons. There is a great need for people to look after the practical side of church life.
People who will keep the grounds tidy, people who will hoover the church, people who will open up & lock up, people who will look after the heating, people who will shake hands and give out hymnbooks, people who will put up hymn numbers, people who will give a glass of water to the preacher. The list goes on. Thank God for modern-day Levites - they are essential in any church.
2. PRIVILEGED
Their work was connected with the tabernacle.
The Levites:
(a) Dismantled it
(b) Erected it
(c) Guarded it
(d) Carried it

3. PROUD
Consider the parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10. In verse 32 the Levite refuses to help the injured man. The spiritual parallel is the person who refuses to share the gospel with the lost. May we never be guilty of that.
4. PRINCIPLED
In Exodus 32:26-28 we read of the Levites leaving those who were engaged in the golden calf idolatry and joining Moses on the Lord’s side.
Who is on the Lord’s side? Who will serve the King?
Who will be His helpers, other lives to bring?
Who will leave the world’s side? Who will face the foe?
Who is on the Lord’s side? Who for Him will go?
By Thy call of mercy, by Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side — Saviour, we are Thine!
Jesus, Thou hast bought us, not with gold or gem,
But with Thine own life blood, for Thy diadem;
With Thy blessing filling each who comes to Thee,
Thou hast made us willing, Thou hast made us free.
By Thy grand redemption, by Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord’s side — Saviour, we are Thine!
