SERMON: “Security of the Believer”
REF: John 10:28-30
INTRODUCTION
- We have had several receive Christ
- Important to understand we are in a spiritual war
- 2 Cor 10:3-4, “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds”
- It is vital to understand and know that once you have received Christ, received His gift…
- Once you have been made new…that you can be secure in knowing you belong to God for eternity
- Today, I just want to examine again what the bible says about the “Security of the Believer”
- Turn to our text JOHN 10:28-30
- Pray
TRANS: In understanding the security of the believer we must first understand the…
1. The Nature of Salvation
- First, understand salvation is God’s work
- Rom 8:29-30, “For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son…whom He predestined, He also called, who He called, He justified, whom He justified He glorified.”
- John 3:16
- John 1:12, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God…”
- Eph 2:8,9, “For by grace are ye saved through faith, and NOT OF YOURSELVES, it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
- Heb 12:1,2 Salvation begins and ends with Jesus (author and finisher)
- Phil 1:6, “He that began the good work in you…will complete it”
- Salvation is God redemptive work in restoring man to Himself
TRANS: In understanding the nature of God’s salvation, many have asked…
2. Why Do We Need Salvation?
- It goes back to the beginning of time with Adam & Eve (Expound)
- Many believe they don’t need God…they have their own way
- Not what John 14:6 says
- God never intended to be separated from man…but sin causes that separation
- Luke 16:26, “between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to here.”
- Without receiving God’s salvation…you are damned for eternity
TRANS: Man, seeing the need for God, then begins to ask…
3. How Do You Obtain Salvation?
- Jesus won’t force it on you…He won’t break down the door of your heart (Rev 3:20)
- It can’t be earned (Eph 2:8-9) Expound…look what I am doing!
- Bible says you have to receive it (John 1:12)
- In receiving it you must confess it (Rom 10:9-10) Turn there
TRANS: Once you have received God’s gift of eternal life…once you belong to Jesus, then you need to understand it is…
4. God WILLS To Keep You
- The Father’s will is that none be lost (John 6:39)
- 2 Peter 3:9, “…not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”
- Same passage in John 6:38 “Son’s will is to do the Father’s will”
- Turn to John 17:12 as Jesus says He has lost NONE
- Ephesians 4:30 says you have been sealed for the day of redemption
TRANS: Not only is it God’s will to keep you but…
5. God has the Power to Keep You
- Turn to 1 Peter 1:3-5
- We have an inheritance that is imperishable and does not fade away
- How? “Kept by the power of God through salvation”
- Jude verses 24 & 25 says, “Now to Him who is able to keep you from falling…”
- John 10:29, God is greater than all
- Again Eph 4:30 says we have been sealed for the day of redemption
TRANS: God has the ability to keep you because when we are saved, we now have a…
5. Spiritual Union with Christ
- John 14:20, “…I am in my Father, and you in Me, and I in you.”
- Turn to John 17:21-23
- Inseparable connection yields eternal life
- John 14:19, “…because I live, you will live also”
- John 6:57, 58, “As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me WILL LIVE because of me. This is the bread which came down from heaven—not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread WILL LIVE FOREVER.”
- Our spirits are now inner-twined together—they are inseparable
TRANS: Now let begin to close as we look at some…
6. Absolute Statements from the Bible
- John 6:39, 40 All you have given me none have I lost…raise up on the last day
- John 10:28, 29 They shall never perish…neither shall any pluck them
- John 6:50-51 Eat of this bread shall not die…live forever
- John 11:26 Believes in me shall NEVER die
- Rom 8:35-39 asks who shall separate us from the love of God?
- Matt 28:20, Jesus…I am with you always…even to the end of the world
- Many would believe they can remove themselves from God and walk away
- John 10:29 says differently
- Eph 1:4-5 says we have been adopted as sons of Jesus Christ
- Story of Disowning blood son but not adopted son
- Others would say also this is a dangerous doctrine…walk an aisle
- But bible is specific about fruits…if I plant a peach tree…get peaches
- God’s seed planted in my life…things of God should be produced
- Turn to Matt 7:17-20
- Prayer of Jesus
- John 17:11, keep them in thine own name
- John 17:20, All believers who will believe
- John 17:24, those you gave me be with me where I am
CONCLUSION
- If you can lose your salvation, Jesus died on the cross for nothing
- No where does Jesus ever say, “Once you have fallen, when have gotten lost again, here’’ how you can be REBORN again"
- Once you are God’s…truly born again…salvation is forever
- Heb 7:24, 25 Turn there as we close
- Pray
