Summary: The Lord Jesus said "I am a worm". The humble worm has many important lessons for us. Handicap, honour, health, home.

Charles Darwin spent his life promoting the wicked theory of evolution. In his final years, however, all this changed. He turned his back on evolution and received Christ as his Saviour (evolutionists do not want people to know this). On one occasion Darwin was speaking about worms. This is what he said. "It may be doubted whether there are many other animals in the world which have played so important a part in the history of the world". Such a statement may seem absurd. But it isn’t. It is actually very true. Let us learn some precious truths from the little worm.

1. THE HANDICAP FOUND IN WORMS

Worms are blind. They have no eyes. We are reminded of a far more serious type of blindness. 2 Corinthians 4:4 - "the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them".

Come to the light, ’tis shining for thee;

Sweetly the light has dawned upon me.

Once I was blind, but now I can see:

The Light of the world is Jesus!

2. THE HONOUR GIVEN TO WORMS

Christ called Himself a worm. Psalm 22:6 - "I am a worm". The Saviour was speaking of the Scarlet Worm, from which the Israelites got red dye.

This worm furnishes us with a wonderful picture of Calvary. When the mother worm is laying eggs, she attaches herself to wood. She dies when the young are born. As she dies, a red dye is secreted from her body which covers the wood, her young and herself.

I love Thee because Thou hast first loved me,

And purchased my pardon on Calvary’s tree;

I love Thee for wearing the thorns on Thy brow;

If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.

3. THE HEALTH SPREAD BY WORMS

These little creatures tunnel through the soil allowing water and air to permeate the ground. The more worms in the soil the better. If there are worms in your garden, it is a sign of healthy soil.

We are taught here the value of Christians to their country. They improve its spiritual health. We cannot see the work done by worms. It is under the surface. This speaks to us of private prayer. An improvement in the spiritual health of any nation comes about when the prayer closet becomes precious place to those who profess Christ.

4. THE HOME PROVIDED FOR WORMS

(a) A humble home

Down low, in the soil, below ground, out of sight.

Humble thyself and the Lord will draw near thee,

Humble thyself and His presence shall cheer thee;

He will not walk with the proud or the scornful,

Humble thyself to walk with God.

(b) A hurtful home

Sometimes people trample on little worms. This reminds us of the persecution of Christians. In Iraq, believers are being crucified (literally) by Muslim extremists. Christ’s little worms are being trampled on by Satan and his agents. But one day the tables will be turned.

At Thy feet I fall, yield Thee up my all,

To suffer, live, or die for my Lord crucified.

Isaiah 41:14 - "Fear not, thou worm Jacob".
