“Facing Giants”
I Samuel 17:47-51
How to Kill a Giant or A Giant Killer (Use a Can of Raid)
Introduction: Giants. We must face them. Yet, we need not face them alone.
Max Lucado’s book, Facing Giants, takes a profound look at the life of David and digs deeply into the defeats he suffered, and the victories he won, as he faced the giants in his life. When David focused on God, giants tumbled. But when David focused on giants… he stumbled.
Goliaths still roam in our world. Debt. Disaster. Dialysis. Divorce. Deceit. Disease. Depression. These super-sized challenges swagger and strut into our lives, pilfering our sleep, embezzling our peace and robbing us of our joy. The purpose of this sermon is to help us see that while these giants try to dominate our lives, we have the weapons to defeat the giants that try and invade our lives!
I. David was a Man of Faith (47, cp. 45-46)
• David spoke in faith (46, 47)
• (v.45) David walked in faith (came in the name of the Lord)
• We walk by faith, and not by sight (2 Cor. 5:7)…it did not look good
• Without faith it impossible to please God.
• The battle is the Lord’s, God has a track record handling battles.
II. David’s Lack of Fear (48)
• A person cannot fight in the Lord’s battle and win with fear.
• “God has not given us the spirit of fear, but power and of love and of a sound mind.”
• When the giant comes hastens toward you, don’t run from, but run to it and stand up to it in the power of the Lord. It has been said, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” (James 4.7)
III. David did not Fake It (49, cp.39-40)
• Keep it real. Don’t fake and shake. Be real!
• 39,40 – David took off the armor given him by Saul.
• He took it because he had not tested it.
• “…for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looks on the outer appearance, but God looks on the heart.” (I Sam. 16.7)
Conclusion: David Fought the Enemy and Won (49b-51)
• Jesus had a battle with death and grave in the ring. But he won the battle.
