Lords Supper
Luke 22:14 - 20 (KJV) 14And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. 15And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: 16For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. 17And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: 18For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. 19And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. 20Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.
1. INTRO
We come together tonight to participate in the sacrament of the “Lords Supper” It was initiated on the night of the Passover celebration of unleavened bread. This is the day that the Passover lamb would be slain.
a. To understand the Lords Supper.
i. We need to understand the Passover much better, because the two are related.
b. Different understandings of the supper
i. Most of it is because of bad theology.
ii. When we take a verse of scripture and make a whole belief on what a few words say we can cause problems. It is important to compare the whole of scripture when coming up with doctrine or statements of belief.
That’s why to truly understand the Lord’s Supper it is important to understand the Passover.

1. The only thing that saved you was going to be the blood of a innocent lamb.
2. Take the spotless lamb. Sacrifice it and place the blood on the door.
3. As the angel of death would come by whom ever had this lambs blood would be free
v. They also had to eat the lamb that night. All of it.
1. They had to have there cloaks tucked in, sandals on their feet and their staff in their hand as if ready to go on a journey.
2. Showing the world we know we are set free before it even happened.
vi. That night every first born son who didn’t have lambs blood on their door posts was struck down.

18 You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.
b. This is because Jesus became our sacrificial lamb.
i. Instead of a real lamb Jesus took its place
1. This is my body that is given for you.

iii. Read scripture
1 Corinthians 11:17-32 (NIV)
17 In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. 18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it.
19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval.
20 When you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat,
21 for as you eat, each of you goes ahead without waiting for anybody else. One remains hungry, another gets drunk.
22 Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you for this? Certainly not!
23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread,
24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me."
25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me."
26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.
28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.
29 For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.
30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.
31 But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment.
32 When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.

7. PAUL WAS HORRIFIED ABOUT THIS
8. WE MUST EXAMINE OURSELVES
28 A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.
a. Its not to see how good we are
i. As if to say I have no sin
b. Its to recognize our sin
i. 31 But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment.
9. NO ONE IS WORTHY
a. That’s the point
b. We must realize this
c. Examine our sin
d. Confess it before God
i. Lord forgive me I am a sinner
ii. Reveal to me my sinfulness.
iii. Give me the power to over Come
iv. Sin me free from my prison so that I might praise your name
e. But if we are waiting to be sinless before we eat
i. No one will ever eat
ii. That was the Corinthians problem
f. They didn’t take the time to recognize their need for Jesus and His blood.
i. They ate like everything was fine.
32 When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world
10. But when we let the Lord Judge us now, we don’t have to be condemned later when He Judges the world later.
a. Because we have already been judge and declared not Guilty.
11. This is what we remember when we eat of this supper
a. It’s so important.
12. It’s the one meal that brings the whole body of Christ together as we reflect on what Jesus had done.
13. If anyone has anything they are needing forgiveness for now is the time to ask for it.
14. If anyone feels they don’t need forgiveness for anything…..I simply say let the holy spirit open to you what needs to be revealed.
a. This is the time for that.
