How Big Is God?

2 Chronicles 2:1-6
And Solomon determined to build an house for the name of the LORD, and an house for his kingdom.
2 And Solomon told out threescore and ten thousand men to bear burdens, and fourscore thousand to hew in the mountain, and three thousand and six hundred to oversee them.
3 And Solomon sent to Huram the king of Tyre, saying, As thou didst deal with David my father, and didst send him cedars to build him an house to dwell therein, even so deal with me.
4 Behold, I build an house to the name of the LORD my God, to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him sweet incense, and for the continual shewbread, and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts of the LORD our God. This is an ordinance for ever to Israel.
5 And the house which I build is great: for great is our God above all gods.
6 But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him? who am I then, that I should build him an house, save only to burn sacrifice before him?
I want to remind you this morning about the God we serve, and that He is able to meet any need in your life.
We sing “Great and mighty is He,”, “He is able to deliver thee,”
“He is more than enough,” and other songs reminding us of the might, power, and sovereignty of God, and it is time we believe what we profess.
As I grew up in the church, we used to see the handiwork of God more frequently because technology, medicine, and procedures were not at the level they are today so people had to trust God.
I thank God for the technology that we enjoy today, but let us be careful that we do not get to where we have a misplaced trust in what man can do and put God in a box.
When I was a boy I pictured God as this huge, vast, unreachable person that was too big to be personal.
Even the description in our text this morning describes Him in this manner if you follow the words without the relationship.
Solomon had it in his heart to build a place, a house for God to dwell.
Solomon said, “Who is able to build Him a house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain Him?”
Think of it, the heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain him.
Right now we know that there are billions of stars, and millions of galaxy’s and planets, and they are finding new ones continually.
I was thinking this past week as we were in Monterey, California, playing Pebble Beach Golf Course, I looked at the most beautiful place I have ever laid eyes on, I thought, If God made this in six days, Heaven is going to be awesome.
Eye hath not seen, ear hath not heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man what God has in store.
I sat on that plane coming home reading the Bible and began to read how awesome God is, the heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him, my cup began to overflow, right there on that plane.
How big is God, how big and wide His vast domain,
To try to tell these lips can only start,
He’s big enough to rule this mighty universe,
Yet small enough to live within my heart.
Statements like Solomon wrote tend to give readers of the Bible a mystical impression of God, being too mystically large to be physically personal, but let us remember what John wrote.
John 1:1-14 NIV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.
Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
What Solomon was saying is that God is not limited to any one place.
God is omnipresent – the ability to be in all places at all times.
Manufactured idols can only be in one place at a time.
God looks on the outward and inward of man at the same time.
He is the creator and sustainer of time and space, He’s everywhere.
God is omniscience – Having superior wisdom and knowledge.
He knows all things.
He knows our thoughts.
He prophesies the events of the future, even Christ’s death on the cross, His bodily resurrection, the coming of the Lord, and death being overcome.
God is omnipotent – the all-encompassing power of God, the creator of all things.
For thine is the Kingdom and the power, forever and ever.
He is the all knowing, all-powerful God who David said is a present help in time of trouble.
There is no God like Jehovah!
When Pharaoh would not let the people go God told Moses that He would show Pharaoh that there was no God like the Lord God.
When the waters of Marah were bitter were made sweet Moses said, “Who is like unto thee O’ Lord God among god’s.
In Deuteronomy 33 Moses said, “There is none like God who rideth on the Heaven’s.
In Jericho, Rahab told them they heard of the Lord God of Israel how He dried up the Red Sea, how he defeated their enemies and their hearts were faint and they lost their courage, for the Lord God, He is God in heaven above and earth beneath.
I don’t know how big your situation is this morning that you are going through, but don’t put God in a box, place your situation in the box.
How big is God? He’s big enough to rule this mighty universe, yet small enough to live within your heart.
The earth is His and the fullness thereof.
The heaven is His throne, and the earth is His footstool.
How big is God?
The Psalmist proclaims, the heaven declares His glory, and the firmament shows His handiwork.
His love is limitless, His promises are sure,
His mercy is everlasting, His grace is sufficient, His reign is righteousness,
His yoke is easy and His burden is light,
He is enduringly strong, eternally steadfast, and impartially merciful.
Are you getting a picture of who He is?
John declared Him the only begotten of the father, full of grace and truth,
He is the centerpiece of civilization and the miracle of the ages.
He is the giver of every good and perfect gift, for He alone can supply all of your needs.
How big is God?
He is the doorway to deliverance, the pathway to peace, the roadway to righteousness, the highway to holiness and the gateway to glory.
I wish I could describe Him to you but He’s indescribable, incomprehensible, invincible, and irresistible.
The heavens cannot contain Him, let alone man explain Him.
You cannot outlive Him, and you can’t live without Him.
Pilate found no fault in Him, Herod could not kill Him,
Death could not handle Him, and the grave could not hold Him.
He had no predecessor, and He will have no successor,
There was none before Him and there will be none after Him.
How Big Is God? He’s big enough to rule this mighty universe, yet small enough to love within my heart.
