I. Introduction
A. Valvano and Victory
1. Former NC State coach’s first college coaching job.
a) He was 23 years old and coaching at a small school.
b) He was known for his overwhelming desire to be victorious.
c) A player finally got the nerve to talk to him about it.
2. A Loaded Question
a) “Coach, why is winning so important to you,” asked the player.
b) The young Valvano said, “Because the final score defines you. You lose and you are a loser. You win and you’re a winner.”
c) The player said, “I think what defines you is character. How you play the game and how you relate to teammates defines you; regardless if you win or lose.”
3. A reflective coach.
a) Twenty four years later Valvano was in a life struggle with terminal spinal cancer.
b) Just before his death the now famous coach stated, “The kid was right twenty four years ago. It’s attitude and effort. It’s trying and launching out that is really important. I can’t help think what a great human being I could have been, if I would have had this awareness years ago.”
B. Jesus and Victory
1. The right approach.
a) The player was certainly correct in his thinking.
b) Attitude and effort will produce good results.
c) The same is true in Christianity.
2. The Victory is Assured
a) Through Jesus the victory is already won – Revelation 1:18
b) Our attitude and actions will determine if we are own the winning team.
c) In I John 5:1-13 we are assured of victory in Jesus.
