PHILIP—THE DISCIPLE OF JESUS
INTRODUCTION:
I. Jesus chose 12 men to be His disciples, and later his apostles (the sent out ones). A study of them is a valuable study. We would be surprised sometimes at the list that Jesus comprised.
II. Today we will study about Philip.
1. Who is Philip?
2. How did he meet Jesus?
3. What lessons do we learn from his life?
BODY:
I. WHO IS PHILIP?
We do not know much of him…
He was from the town of Bethsaida, where Peter and Andrew were from. He was a friend of Nathaniel, known also as Bartholomew.
II. HOW DID HE MEET JESUS?
John 1:43-49
III. WHAT LESSON DO WE LEARN FROM HIS LIFE?
a. Have faith in Jesus, as remarked in his conversation with Nathaniel—John 1:44-49
b. Feeding of 5,000—If we focus on human levels tasks seem overwhelming--John 6:7 "Eight months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!"
c. He is mentioned in 12:21-22
d. Who has seen Jesus has seen the Father—John 14:8-9. Jesus answered: "Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ’Show us the Father’?”
CONCLUSION:
Philip is an interesting case study. Not much is said about him, but the lessons of his life are very valuable. The life of Philip teaches us to…
a. Have faith that is shared with others.
b. Focusing on God makes overwhelming tasks easy.
c. See Jesus is to see the Father. He “…is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being…” Heb 1:3.
These are possible only if we have a daily close walk with God!
