Summary: How The Lord alone can satisfy us in the midst of trouble - Encouraging Message

The Song of the Satisfied Soul

Psalms 63

Intro:

The Writer and Occasion is stated in the Superscription

It Says “ A Psalm of David When he was in the Wilderness

of Judah

This Psalm, Just Like Chapter 62 probably belongs to the Time of Absolom’s Rebellion.

There are Several Reasons why this is thought to be when Absolom was rebelling

I. The Writer is a King vs.11

II. He is Away from Home and in a Weary Land vs.1

III. He Longs to be Back in the Sanctuary vs. 2

IV. Enemies Seek to kill Him vs. 9

V. He is Confident of their Overthrow vs. 9,10

VI. And he Himself Rejoices in God vs. 7

The Theme of this Psalm is Satisfaction

David with his loyal Followers have left Jerusalem by the Jericho Rd. which led through the Northern Oart of the Wilderness of Judah

This is the Same Wilderness where David Often Found Refuge from the Actions of Saul, But this Time He’s fleeing from his own Son

No Doubt his Heart was Heavy, No Doubt there were Many Obstacles Along the Way

But it’s in these times that the Grace of God Becomes Reality

I’m glad that The Grace of God Is Sufficient for Every Need

The Language of this Psalm Suggests that it was Written at Night Vs. 6 for Example

Under the Circumstance David Was not Likely to Sleep Restfully, and Yet his Soul Found Rest in Communion with God

David Did Not Stop Singing because he was in the Wilderness. But He Simply Adjusted his worship to fit the Situation.

Though there was a Desert all around DAVID SANG ON

Though the Enemy was hot on his trail DAVID SANG ON

The situation might have looked Hopeless But HE SANG ON

He was away from Home in a far country – BUT HE SANG ON

A SOUL THAT IS SATISFIED CAN SING NO MATTER WHAT THE CIRCUMSTANCE ARE!!!

THE OLD SONG SAYS “IF YOU CAN SING WHEN IT SEEMS THERE IS NOTHING TO SING ABOUT- THEN I’LL KNOW THAT YOU KNOW MY SAVIOUR”

I’m Glad that No matter what Comes to a Christian--YOU CAN KEEP YOUR SONG

I’m glad in the Dry & Dusty Wilderness of Life – We can still have a Song

I Want to Look at four things in this Chapter and preach

“MY SOUL IS SATISFIED”

I. CRAVING OF FELLOWSHIP - vs. 1-2

a. Communion

David’s Communion with God was so Sweet that he Wasn’t going to let the Desert Get Him Down

HEY!!! Aren’t You glad that God can be just as real in the desert as he is on the Mountain top!!!

The God on the Mountain – IS STILL God in the Valley

AND BY THE WAY

Our Vision on the Mountains should be our Comfort in the

Valley

Did you know – When your on top of a mountain you can see where the Valley Ends

So When Your on the Mountain - Take out your Spiritual Video Recorder So you can remember that the Valley Will End

Get all you can on the Mountain and It will help you when you hit the Valley

Come to Church and load Your Wagon Cause the Ways gonna get Rough

Find Out What a Big God he is on the Mountain Top

And Remember it when you Get in the Valley

That’s Why I Like Recording Services

Cause The Devil can get you Down So Bad Sometimes and you

can go Plug in a Tape of a Holy Ghost Service

AND SAY IT MAY BE BAD NOW BUT I REMEMBER WHEN IT WASN’T THIS WAY I KNOW THAT GOD”S STILL GOD

OUR VISION ON THE MOUNTAIN SHOULD BE OUR COMFORT IN THE VALLEY

OUR VISIONS IN THE SANCTUARY SHOULD BRIGHTEN OUR VIEW IN THE SOLITUDE

THAT’S WHY I NEED THE HOUSE OF GOD

How Many times have we experienced a problem on

Monday that was preached about on Sunday

How Many times have we needed the strength we got on

Wednesday when the Difficulty came on Thursday

Thank God for the Good Times – THEY GIVE US STRENGTH FOR THE BAD

I was looking this morning at different people who met God in the Desert

On Many Occasions God Appeared to his children while they were in the Desert wilderness

HAGAR saw God in the Wilderness - Gen. 16:13

Moses “ “ “ “ “ “ “ “ “ - Ex 3:1-4

Elijah - I Kings 19:4-18

And Others spent their Times in the Wilderness

But Here David finds out that God is just as real in the Wilderness as he was in Jerusalem!!!

Thank God I want to say – I’VE MET THE LORD IN THE

WILDERNESS

I’ve been thirsty and found him to be my water

I’ve been Hungry and Found him to be my bread

I’ve been Weary and found him to be my resting Place

I’ve been weak and found him to be my strength

I’ve been Bruised and found him to be the Healing ointment

I’ve been discouraged and found him to be my support

I’ve been an outcast and found him with open arms to welcome me

I’ve been frightened and found him to be my Peace

I’ve been in the Valley and found him to be the Lily

I’ve been distressed and found him to be Comfort

I’ve been to the end of the rope and found him to be my solution

I’ve been Lost before and Found him to be the Way

I’ve been hurt and found him to be the Balm in Gilead

I’ve been Condemned and found him to be the Sacrifice for my Sin

THANK GOD -- I’M TRYING TO TELL YOU – I’VE MET THE LORD IN THE WILDERNESS!!!

David Could Enjoy Communion with God in the Wilderness because of his Personal Relationship to God

He Said, “O God, Thou art my God”

Jehovah was the God of David --

Not Only by Creation -- But By Covenant

Not Only by Commandment -- But also by David’s Choice

Not Only by Conversion -- But By Consecration

David Had a Personal God Who Was Present Even in the Wilderness Experiences

Now Every Child of God is Gonna Go through the Wilderness

But it’s in the Quietness and Loneliness of the Wilderness that you can here the Still Small Voice of Comfort

Aren’t You Glad that You Have A God That’s Present in the Wilderness

When Everthing’s Going Wrong -- When the Devils Fighting

I’m Saying David Had a Craving for Communion

David Said “Early will I Seek Thee”

There Three Things That We should Seek God Early in:

1. IN LIFE

Almost 90% of all Saved People Received Christ Before 24

Years of Age

The Older a Person is the more difficult it is for them to be Saved

If you’re a Young Person here tonight - You need to Seek God

Early in Life

2. EACH DAY

In the Morning, While the day is Fresh is the Best time to

Meet with God.

Before Your Mind Gets Cluttered with Cares of the day

you need to spend some time with Him

I met God in the Morning

When my day was at its Best

And His Presence came like Sunrise,

Like a Glory in my Breast

All Day Long the Presence Lingered;

All Day Long he Stayed with Me;

And we Sailed in Perfect calmness

O’er a Very Troubled Sea

Other Ships were Blown and Battered,

Other Ships were Sore Distressed,

But the Winds that Seemed to Drive Them

Brought to us a Peace and Rest

Then I Thought of other Mornings

With a Keen Remorse of Mins

When I Too had Loosed the Moorings

With the Rpesence left behind

So I Think I Know the Secret

Learned from Many a Troubled way

You Must Seek him in the Morning

If you Want Him through the Day

Then You need to seek him early

3. IN EVERY PROBLEM

We always try to work it out by ourselves -- And End up Making the Problem Worse --

We Use God as a Last Resort

It’s Been Said, “The Wise Man Does first what the Fool Does Last

PETER SAID, “CAST YOUR CARES ON HIM”

Don’t Try to Carry what only he can Handle

Take your Burden to the Lord and Leave them There

Notice this now where David Said, “MY SOUL THIRSTETH FOR THEE, MY FLESH LONGETH FOR THEE”

The Soul and Flesh Denote the Whole Man

His Whole Being Was went out After God

A WEARY PLACE AND A WEARY HEART MAKE THE PRESENCE OF GOD MORE DESIRABLE

Trials Make God’s Promises Sweeter

Trials will liven up your Prayer Life

Matt. 5:6 Blessed are they that Hunger and Thrist after Righteousness For they Shall be Filled

Some of You have come in here this Week -- Dragging Bottom

Some of you have been Fighting Hell by the Acre

No Doubt some of you are on the Brink of Giving Up

You’re Hungry, You’re Thirsty -- You Want a Drink

Right here is a Promise in the Word of God -- They Shall be filled

David was in a “Dry and Thirsty Land” where there was no Water –

This is True Literally because the Wilderness of Judah was Desert Country

But it was also true Figuratively

But David Was Dry Spiritually - David was in Exile from his throne and the Place of Worship -- But he still had his Song

I. CRAVING FOR FELLOWSHIP - VS. 1-2

II. CONTENT WITH FAVOR - VS. 3-6

Testimony vs. 3

It is Quite Evident that David regards “Life” here more than Mere Existence, Because he Statement implies that Life is Good.

David Regards the Loving-Kindness of God As Better than a Life of Prosperity and Pleasure

David is Saying he would rather have God’s Lovingkindness in the Wilderness than to have Prosperity and Pleasure in Jerusalem.

He Realized the Truth in Acts 17:28 “For in him we live and Move and have our Being.”

David is Saying like the Songwriter I’d RATHER HAVE JESUS

You Can Have this World

You Can have its Gold

You can have the Fornication and Drugs and Alcohol

I’LL TAKE JESUS

I’m talking about a Satisfied Soul

We Not Only see the testimony but we see the

Thanksgiving vs. 4-6

We Need to Bless the Lord with our Lives as well as our lips

The Lifting up of the Hands was the attitude of worship and symbolized the lifting up of the Heart.

Hebrews12:12 Says “Wherefore lift up the Hands which Hang Down”

We’ve Got So Much to Thank him For

In Vs. 5 David passes from thirst to Satisfaction.

vs. 1 “My Soul Thirsteth for thee”

vs. 5 “My soul will be Satisfied”

It is the Saviour Alone who can give Satisfaction

The Provisions of God for the Spiritual Needs of Men are Represented in the Scriptures as a Sumptuous Feast

The Words Marrow and Fatness in vs. 5 express the Idea of Bountiful Provision

The Hebrews were more fond of fat than we are, and their highest idea of festive provision is embodied in the two words, marrow and fatness:

A soul that has his hope in God and full of his favour will be feeding upon the best of the best, the delicasy of a royal banquet.

Whatever God Gives he Gives Abundantly

Isaiah 55:7 says, “He Will Abundantly Pardon”

Psalms 130:7 Says “ He Gives Abundant Redemption”

II Cor. 9:8 Says “Abundant Grace”

God Gives Abundantly

Vs. 6 Reveals that David not only had a feast in the Night, but also a Song in the Heart

Have you Ever been Laying in the Bed just thinking about the Goodness of God.

Recollections Remind us of Who God is and what he can Do

That’s what David is Doing – But Remember he is in the wilderness

He is in a Storm

He is in a Trial

David found a good occupation for those nights he Couldn’t Sleep

Now Remember Meditation is Not Daydreaming—

Meditation is not a Daze

Meditation is not State of confusion

Meditation is Continuos Thought-----Meditation means to turn over In ones Mind

Meditation is a Bible Word – It’s used throughout the Word of God

The Same word is rendered in different ways -- Meditate, Muse, Study, ponder, imagine

IT’S A LOST ART IN THIS SOCIETY – WE’RE TOO BUST TO THINK – IT’S A SAD DAY

We have to let the New Media tell us who to Vote For

We have to let the Preacher tell us what we believe

We have to let the Food Network tell us what to eat

Commercials what to Buy

I could go on and on -- Let me challenge you to use your imagination

THINK A LITTLE – GET THE THING’S OF GOD IN YOUR MIND’S EYE

BEFORE YOU WRITE ME OFF – LET ME SAY THIS

It’s Amazing how we will allow the Devil and the Flesh to use

our Imagination – BUT WANT LET THE GOD WHO

MADE IT USE IT

We need to Meditate on the Goodness of God

Meditation is Like a Cow Chewing her Cud

Turning it Over and Over In your Mind

Meditation Has been Neglected and it has caused many a Person to Be Defeated Christians

It’s an Important Mental Excercise of the Spiritual Life!!!

It’ll Cause you to Realize how big Your God is

And You’ll Forget about the Problems,

You’ll Forget about the News,

You’ll forget what kind of shape this world’s in

You’ll forget about what you don’t have because you’re excited about what you do have

AND YOU’LL GET YOUR SONG BACK!!!

I. CRAVING FOR FELLOWSHIP - VS. 1-2

II. CONTENT WITH HIS FAVOR – VS. 3-6

III. COMFORT FROM THE FATHER - VS. 7-8

1. Shelter vs. 7

Protection is well assured

It is Guaranteed by both God’s Promises and by Man’s Experiences

Here the Word of the Lord had been Trusted

The Promises of the Lord were Tested

The Deliverance of the Lord was Treasured

I’m Glad that You Can trust the Word

“Forever is thy Word Settled in Heaven”

My Word is No Good, Your Word is No Good

BUT YOU CAN TRUST GOD’S WORD

“In the Shadow of thy Wings” here is a Beautiful Picture

Rain and Snow can’t Pierce it

The Wings make a Complete Covering

There is Resistance in the Feathers Without and Softness in the Feathers Within

To That Baby Chick, the Mother Hen’s Wings Means Scurity, Comfort, Rest.

Aren’t you Glad that The Lord Has Put his Wings over Us

for Protection from the Winds, and the Rains.

We Have Comfort in the Wings of the Father

2. Support -- vs.8

In this Verse we Find that the Seeker is Sought

The Expression “My Soul Followeth hard after thee” literally Means “is Glued to thee”

David is Saying “My Soul Completely Depend upon thee”

We see a Mutual Relationship here

David Depends on and Cleaves to God And God Holds him up with his Powerful Right

It is our Business to Depend on Him and By Faith Believe

And I’m Glad that God Always Come through for Us

Have you ever just turned to God and Said I Can’t Do It

What Did God Do?

Did He Leave you there to Die?

Did he Say Figure it Out yourself?

NO!!! He Took it For You and Took Care of whatever you Were Going Through

There are three Ways that God Upholds Us

He Upholds us

1. As to Sin -- Lest we should Fall by it

2. As to Suffering -- Lest we should Sink Under it

3. As to Service -- Lest we should Decline From It

I. CRAVING FOR FELLOWSHIP - VS. 1-2

II. CONTENT WITH HIS FAVOR – VS. 3-6

III. COMFORT FROM THE FATHER - VS. 7-8

IV. CONFIDENCE IN THE FUTURE VS. 9-11

A. The Punishment of the Rebellious -- vs. 9-10

While the Path of the Righteous leads Upward

The Path of the Rebellious leads Downward

David Here Looks Confidently to the Defeat and Destruction of his Enemies

Do You Know Why I Can have a Song I my Heart and a Skip in my Heal when the Devil is On My Back

BECAUSE I KNOW THAT HE KNOWS HIS DAY IS COMING

LET THIS WORLD HAVE THERE FUN AND THERE DRINKING AND THE ROCK MUSIC-- THEIR TIME IS COMING

LET’EM TALK ABOUT THE CHURCH AND TALK ABOUT HOW FOOLISH WE ARE FOR SERVING GOD

THEIR DAY’S COMING

David was Confident of the Punishment of the Rebellious

B. The Prosperity of the Righteous --- vs. 11

I’M GLAD THAT THERE IS A BETTER DAY COMING

THAT’S WHY I CAN HAVE SONG IN MY HEART

I KNOW THAT THIS IS NOT ALL THERE IS TO IT
