This sermon explores how to prepare for Jesus' return through mastering our minds, maintaining physical readiness, and molding our hearts according to 1 Peter 1:13-16.

Introduction

Welcome, dear friends, to this beautiful sanctuary where we gather, not as strangers, but as a family united in Christ. Let us cast aside the worries of the world for a moment, and turn our hearts and minds to the Word of God. It is a profound privilege to stand before you today, sharing the timeless wisdom of Scripture, and I pray that the message we discover together will not only enlighten us but also embolden us to live out our faith with renewed vigor.

It was the great preacher Charles Spurgeon who once said, "Visit many good books, but live in the Bible." Today, we shall heed his wise counsel and live in the words of the Apostle Peter. Let us turn to 1 Peter 1:13-16: "Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'"

In these verses, Peter provides us with a blueprint for living a life of preparation, a life that is mentally, physically, and spiritually ready for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. He calls us to Mental Mastery, to Maintaining Physical Readiness, and to Molding a Heart for Preparation. These are the main points we will ponder upon today.

But before we do, let us bow our heads and hearts in prayer. Gracious and loving God, we thank You for gathering us here today. We thank You for Your Word, which is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. As we meditate on the words of Your servant Peter, we ask for Your wisdom and understanding. Open our minds to grasp the truths You have for us, and soften our hearts to receive Your message with joy. Help us to live in readiness for Your return, living each day as if it could be the day we see Your face. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Transition. Now, with our hearts attuned to the Spirit and our minds open to the wisdom of Scripture, let us consider these profound truths that Peter has shared with us. How can we master our minds, maintain our physical readiness, and mold our hearts in preparation for the coming of our Lord? These are the questions we shall seek to answer today. Let us do so with humility, with reverence, and with a willingness to be transformed by the power of God's Word.

Mental Mastery for Preparation

Being alert involves a keen awareness of our thoughts and attitudes, a vigilant watchfulness over the inclinations of our minds. It means being mindful of the influences that seek to shape our thinking, the voices that vie for our attention, the ideas that clamor for acceptance. It means discerning between truth and error, between wisdom and folly, between the eternal and the temporal.

Being sober-minded, on the other hand, involves a disciplined control over our thoughts and emotions. We are not allowing our minds to be swayed by every passing whim or fancy, every fleeting feeling or emotion. We should not be carried away by irrational fears or unfounded worries, by vain imaginations or idle speculations. It means maintaining a balanced perspective, sound judgment, a steady focus.

This mental mastery is not an end in itself, but a means to a greater end. It is a preparation for the grace to be brought to us when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. It is a readiness for the glorious hope that awaits us, the blessed assurance that fills us, the divine inheritance that is ours in Christ.

In this process of preparation, we are called to be obedient children and resist the pull of our old sinful nature. This obedience is not a burdensome duty, but a joyful response to the love of our heavenly Father. It is not a grudging submission, but a willing surrender. It is not a reluctant compliance, but a heartfelt commitment.

This obedience is made possible by the transforming power of the Holy Spirit, who renews our minds and changes our hearts. It is He who enables us to discern what is good, pleasing and perfect in God's sight.

Application. In this journey of mental mastery, let us remember that we are not alone. We have the Holy Spirit as our guide, the Word of God as our map, the community of believers as our companions. Let us encourage one another, pray for one another, bear one another's burdens. Let us spur one another on toward love and good deeds, let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
