Introduction

Good morning, church family. Today we're going to dive into a sermon about prayer - its urgency, its power, and the comfort it brings.

We're going to focus on Psalm 102:1, which says,

"Hear my prayer, O LORD; let my cry for help come to you."

Now, you may be thinking, why the urgency? Why the power? Why the comfort? Well, these are three pillars that uphold our communication with God.

Oswald Chambers once said, "Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; prayer is the greater work."

Let's open with a word of prayer.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for this opportunity to gather in Your name and study Your word. Guide our hearts and minds as we learn about the urgency, power, and comfort of prayer. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

The Urgency

The urgency of prayer is a concept that is often overlooked in our modern, fast-paced world. We tend to view prayer as a last resort, something we turn to when all else fails. However, the Bible teaches us that prayer should be our first response, not our last resort. This urgency is not born out of panic or desperation, but out of a deep understanding of our dependence on God.

Psalm 102:1 encapsulates this: The Psalmist doesn't merely ask God to hear his prayer, he pleads with Him. The use of the word 'cry' suggests a sense of desperation, a need for immediate attention. This is not a casual conversation, but a heartfelt plea for help. The Psalmist understands that his only hope lies in the Lord, and so he urgently seeks His face.

The intensity and sincerity of our prayers: It's about recognizing our need for God and coming to Him with a sense of expectancy. It's about understanding that every moment we spend away from God is a moment wasted. It's about realizing that our prayers are not just words, but powerful tools that can move mountains and change the course of history.

Prioritizing our relationship with God: In a world filled with distractions, it's easy to push prayer to the back burner. But the Psalmist reminds us that prayer should be at the forefront of our lives. It's not something we do when we have spare time, but something we make time for because we understand its importance.

The immediacy of God's response: When we cry out to Him, He hears us. He doesn't put us on hold or make us wait in line. He listens to our prayers and responds in His perfect timing. This should give us confidence to approach Him with boldness, knowing that He is always ready to hear our prayers.

Don’t rush God or try to manipulate Him into doing your bidding: It's about aligning our hearts with His and seeking His will above our own. It's about coming to Him with open hands and an open heart, ready to receive whatever He has for us. It's about understanding that prayer is not a one-way conversation, but a dialogue where we speak to God and also listen to what He has to say.

Our need for God and His readiness to hear us: It challenges us to prioritize our relationship with Him and approach Him with a sense of expectancy. It encourages us to pray with intensity and sincerity, knowing that our prayers have the power to move the hand of God.
