Praise And Worship
Contributed by Steven W. Satterfield on Mar 10, 2022 (message contributor)
Summary: verses about it
Praise is to be clamourously foolish, loud, (the main definition, 88 times), shouting, sing in the Spirit, hope, surrender, sacrifice
Worship is to bow or fall down, crouch, humbly beseech, do obeisance (in the Hebrew), to kiss, like a dog licking a master's hand, or wagging its tail/whining), to prostrate oneself in homage (in the Greek)
Horizontal ("Majesty") vs. Vertical ("Thou Art Worthy") singing about or to God
There are many kinds of songs in the Bible. There are songs of:
Merrymaking- Genesis 31;27, Judges 11:34, Job 21: 11-12, Isaiah 5: 12, 24:8, Jeremiah 7: 34, 25: 10, Amos
5: 23, Luke 5:25
Work - Isaiah 5: 1, 16: 10
News- Isaiah 48: 20, Ezekiel 27: 25
National rejoicing - Numbers 21: 17
Victory in battle - Judges 11:34, 1 Samuel 18: 6-7, 21:11; 29: 5, 2 Chronicles 20:28
The King's court - 1 Samuel 16: 12-16, Ecclesiastes 2: 8
The shepherd boy - 1 Samuel 16: 18
The young men at the gates - Lamentations 5: 14
The feasts - Isaiah 5: 12; Amos 6:5
Mourning - 2 Samuel 1: 18-27; Lamentations; Matthew 9: 23. We should praise and worship God all the
time, regardless of our circumstances.
2 Chronicles 5: 12-14 is about the shekinah glory.
2 Chronicles 20- "King Jehoshaphat sent the musicians and singers out in front of the army to defeat the enemy. This happened after a great time of seeking God, praise, worship, celebrations, shouting, etc. This is a great picture of the power of praise in defeating the enemy."
Psalm 22: 3 "But you are holy who INHABITS the praises of Israel." (NKJV) Evil can't be there.
Psalm 40: 3 "He has put a NEW song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God Many will see and fear, and put their TRUST in the Lord." Praise results in awe and trust with God.
"PRAISE is not (just) fast songs, or the particular words that are sung - WORSHIP is not just a slow song . . . PRAISE is operated as an act of faith and sacrifice, WORSHIP is the expression of our response to (God's) presence. PRAISE says "I love You for what you have done, are doing, and are going to do, but WORSHIP says "I love You for who You are, for I have seen You and known You." God honours faith with his presence - the worship takes over - this is out-worked in our lifestyle, as we are worshippers - we don't do worship."
John 4: 24 "God is Spirit; and those who WORSHIP Him must WORSHIP in spirit and in truth." No facades, don't feign worship. It can be a sacrifice.
2 Corinthians 3:18 "But was all, with unveiled face beholding as in a MIRROR the GLORY of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from GLORY to GLORY, just as from the Lord, the Spirit." We become like what / who we worship.
Ephesians 5: 19, "speaking to one another in PSALMS and HYMNS and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with you heart to the Lord"
Colossians 3: 16 "Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with PSALMS and HYMNS and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God."
