Summary: If you are not a sold out follower of Jesus Christ, you’re living your life no different than an atheist.

Practical Atheism

May 18, 2008 Morning Service

Immanuel Baptist Church, Wagoner, OK

Rick Boyne

Message Point: If you are not a sold out follower of Jesus Christ, you’re living your life no different than an atheist.

Focus Passage: I Samuel 17: 1-11, 24-27, 33-37, 45-47

Supplemental Passage: Luke 9:23 And He was saying to them all, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.

Introduction:

I. To focus on the physical, not the spiritual

a. The army was concerned about Goliath’s size & strength and David’s size & youth

b. David recognized this as a spiritual battle (“defy the armies of Israel” which was an affront against God since everyone knew Israel to be the children of God”)

II. To forget, instead of remember God’s past actions

a. Israel had just had a great victory: Jonathan and his armor bearer defeated the Philistines (I Sam 14)

b. The army was afraid of some of the same folks they had just defeated.

III. To not act, instead of act

a. They were there, being taunted for 40 days! Every day the same thing.

b. They were so afraid, they wouldn’t defend their country. They were acting like any other army; not like the Army of the Children of God!
