INTRODUCTION:
Every believer has been given supernatural authority by Christ to overcome the works of darkness. In Luke 10:19, Jesus declares a powerful truth: we are empowered to trample upon serpents and scorpions—symbolic of demonic powers and destructive forces. These words were not poetic; they were a divine empowerment for spiritual warfare.
The enemy often tries to afflict believers with fear, confusion, oppression, and destruction, but God has not left us powerless. He has equipped us with divine authority to subdue and destroy every satanic activity that threatens our peace, progress, or purpose.
As we study this topic, let us understand the nature of our authority in Christ and how to exercise it boldly. The time has come for the Church to walk in power and not in fear—for serpents and scorpions are under our feet!
1. THE NATURE OF SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY
We have divine backing to act in Christ's name.
a) Spiritual authority is given, not earned
(Luke 10:19) – “Behold, I give unto you power…”
b) It is rooted in our relationship with Christ
(John 1:12) – As many as received Him… He gave power to become sons.
c) It is greater than all the enemy's power
(1 John 4:4) – Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world.
d) It is meant to be used, not stored
(Mark 16:17) – “These signs shall follow them that believe…”
Biblical Example: Jesus gave His disciples power to cast out devils and heal all manner of sickness (Matthew 10:1).
2. UNDERSTANDING THE SYMBOLISM OF SERPENTS AND SCORPIONS
They represent spiritual opposition and demonic attacks.
a) Serpents symbolise deception, poison, and satanic craftiness
(Genesis 3:1) – The serpent was more subtle than any beast…
b) Scorpions represent pain, torment, and hidden attacks
(Revelation 9:10) – Their sting was like that of scorpions…
c) Both indicate the hostile environment we must walk through
(Psalm 91:13) – “Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder…”
d) Our authority neutralises their danger
(Acts 28:5) – Paul shook off the serpent and felt no harm.
Biblical Example: Paul was bitten by a viper on Malta but was not harmed, to the amazement of the people (Acts 28:3–6).
3. EXERCISING POWER IN THE NAME OF JESUS
Victory lies in enforcing our authority daily.
a) The name of Jesus carries unmatched power
(Philippians 2:10) – At the name of Jesus, every knee must bow.
b) Faith activates divine authority
(Mark 11:23) – If you say to this mountain and do not doubt…
c) Our words must agree with God's Word
(Proverbs 18:21) – Death and life are in the power of the tongue.
d) The blood of Jesus silences the enemy
(Revelation 12:11) – They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb.
Biblical Example: The apostles declared healing in the name of Jesus, and miracles followed (Acts 3:6–9).
4. LIVING A LIFE ABOVE HURT AND HARM
Divine covering is part of our kingdom heritage.
a) Jesus promised protection from harm
(Luke 10:19) – “Nothing shall by any means hurt you.”
b) The enemy may try, but he will fail
(Isaiah 54:17) – “No weapon formed against thee shall prosper.”
c) God keeps His own even in dangerous places
(Daniel 6:22) – “My God sent his angel…”
d) We must stay under divine covering through obedience
(Psalm 91:1) – He that dwelleth in the secret place…
Biblical Example: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out of the fire without a burn (Daniel 3:24–27).
CONCLUSION:
We are not helpless or defenceless. As believers, we have authority over every form of darkness. Serpents and scorpions cannot dominate us because Jesus has placed us far above them. It’s time to rise in boldness, rebuke the enemy, and enforce the dominion we’ve been given.
Remember, this power is not for display but for dominion—over sin, sickness, satanic attacks, and anything else that threatens your destiny. Walk in your God-given authority, and nothing shall hurt you.
PRAYER POINTS:
1. Father, thank You for giving me authority over every power of the enemy.
2. Lord, open my eyes to recognise and defeat hidden attacks in my life.
3. I declare every serpent and scorpion operating around me exposed and defeated.
4. Cover me and my family with divine protection from all satanic harm.
5. I receive grace to walk in power and not in fear every day of my life.
