Summary: To bring out the benefits which accrued to the Early Church on account of persecution. The truths thereof are very much appilcable to us too!!!
Post Pentecostal Trials and their benefits!!!
Let's get it straight...being at the receiving end of persecution is indeed painful. But have we considered that our Heavenly Father in His infinite wisdom permits it for our benefits.
In this Message, Yours Truly is inspired to share both the "Macro" and the "Micro" benefits of being at the receiving end of Persecution.
Firstly the
Macro Benefits…
... You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the Earth - Acts 1:8
... On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles *were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria*- Acts 8:1
For our own good, in order we get greater Heavenly rewards (for doing our Lord's work in the manner He desires), if we simply stay stuck in our own "Jerusalem" (our comfort zone) disobedient to His instructions in “Acts 1:8” to go beyond our own "Jerusalem" then the good Lord to bring us out of our comfort zones can reverse the situation...1:8, now becomes oh boy...oh boy... exactly... 8:1 by permitting persecution_ whereby we go to "Judea and Samaria" also...
Those who had been scattered preached the word *wherever they went (hmmm...Judea and Samaria, also) .- Acts 8:1-4
In all this, we do not see the Christians of the Jewish background not complaining about going through the painful process of Persecutions but rather taking it in their stride and virtually virtually striding forward in their act of Gospel preaching....
Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that broke out when Stephen was killed traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, spreading the word only among Jews. 20 Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus. 21 The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.- Acts 11:19-21
Another Macro benefit of faithful ones' sportively bearing persecution is it inspires the coming generation to toe their line...
Some faced jeers and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were put to death by stoning; they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated he world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves and in holes in the ground. These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.- Heb 11:36-40
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. *And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us* - Heb 12:1
Now coming to the
Micro Benefits….
_We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they are good for us—they help us learn to be patient. And patience develops strength of character in us and helps us trust God more each time we use it until finally our hope and faith are strong and steady- Romans 5:3-4_
We hear often of vicious cycles…do not we? A person would take a small dose of narcotic drug “to enjoy a bit of life” or due to peer pressure say in a college. Subsequently when the body starts craving for a “similar high”, he needs to take a greater dose of that drug (as the previous dosage would not give him a necessary kick) so much so progressively and unwittingly he becomes entrapped in that vicious cycle. Ditto with burrowing money for “Demonstration effect” (to use the parlance of Economics) for purchasing luxury items to show-off in a society…before one comes to his senses, he would be caught in a debt trap with maxed Credit cards. Be that as it may, let me bring before you the intricacies of yet another cycle…which in stark contrast is a Blessed one at that. Before doing so, I need to state that the main purpose of our Heavenly Father saving us-Christians- is to make us like His Son (Christ-like- 2 Cor 3:18). In Eternity, the Christ-like obedience, patience, humility, gentleness, meekness, self-control borne out of deep love for the Father would keep us united with Him forever and ever (unlike the Devil who fell away courtesy Pride). Now how do we absorb these Christ-like qualities in a measure (or close to it) our Saviour possessed? Do we get them by attending a Bible college for say 5 years? Welcome to the subject of “Virtuous cycles”!!! The main purpose of Yours Truly coming up with this message is to highlight the benefits of being “caught” in a virtuous cycle (read imbibing Christ-like virtues) in stark contrast (I repeat) to a vicious cycle!!!
