POCKET FULL OF ROCKS

II Sam. 21:15-22; I Sam.17:40

Introduction:

Ever wondered why David picked up 5 smooth stones from the Brook, I started looking into this thought a little bit more and found some enlightening things about this thought.

I have found in II Samuel 21:15-22 tells of 4 more giants that warred against the Nation Israel and the victory that came over each one of them.

As we head back to I Samuel 17 we can see the battle in full swing when David comes on the scene, lets pick it up from there.

„» I want you to notice that the battle was not just against the Philistine(s) but even his oldest brother Eliab VS.28 and Even Saul the king VS.32-33.

Whenever you start to do something for the Lord God, not only will the enemy rise up against, so will your family, church people, and even the lost will send doubt your way

A. We must say....Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. (I John 4:4)

B. We must say¡KI can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. (Phil.4:13)

Let¡¦s see what David used these 5 Smooth Stones for¡K

1. HE NEEDED A STONE OF FAITH

VS.37 SAYS¡KDavid said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.

„» You and I are going to face things in this life that we are going to have our faith tried, some things will be spiritual, some will be in the flesh, whatever they may be, you better have a Stone of Faith to hit that GIANT square in the head and knock it down out of your way.

II Corinthians 1:24c says¡Kby faith ye stand.

Job 37:14 says¡KHearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.

II Corinthians 5:7 says¡K(For we walk by faith , not by sight:)

---He was confident. Look at VS.37---He Has delivered, He Will deliver

Galatians 2:20 says¡KI am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

„» David had FAITH, Faith that he could STAND firm in, WALK tall in, and LIVE by. DO YOU?

2. HE NEEDED A STONE OF STRENGTH

VS.34-36 SAYS¡KAnd David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock: And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

„» It was his FAITH from the past that STRENGTHENED him for the future.

„» He delivered me from the Lion and the Bear and he will give me the STRENGTH to overcome this uncircumcised Philistine.

Psalm 20:2 says¡K Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion;

Psalm 121:1 says¡K I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

„» David knew where to draw his STRNGTH from in the heat of the battle. DO YOU?

„» When the enemy comes with a full head of steam, do you have a STONE of STRENGTH to knock him down?

3. HE NEEDED A STONE OF WILLINGNESS

VS.32 SAYS¡KAnd David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.

Matthew 26:41says¡K Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

„» I like to think that David the writer of the Psalm (songs) went willingly singing a song¡K

¡¨Because He lives all fear is gone, because I know who hold the future, and life is worth the living just to know He lives.¡¨

„» I guarantee if you have a song living inside your heart, your more apt and willing to go

„» I like to think that David knew the verse in II Peter 3:9¡K

II Peter 3:9 says¡K The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
