Summary: Plain Sailing

Acts 27 v 1-12 Plain Sailing

Paul - The Master of Destruction,

Becomes The Master of Construction (Church Planting)

and The Master of Instruction (His Companions are with him)

1. The Trip -

The Determination - 1 And when it was determined

The Destination - that we should sail into Italy, (Luke also)

The Designation - they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus' band.

The Transport - 2 And entering into a ship of Adramyttium,

The Travel - we launched, meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia;

The Trio, one Aristarchus a Macedonian of Thessalonica being with us

His Courage - Acts 19:29 the city (Ephesus) was filled with confusion:

and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions in travel, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.

His Companionship - Acts 20:4 And there accompanied him into Asia Sopater of Berea; and of the Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus;

and Gaius of Derbe, and Timotheus; and of Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus.

His Company - Acts 27:2 And entering into a ship of Adramyttium,

we launched, meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia; one Aristarchus,

a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us.

His Captivity - Colossians 4:10 Aristarchus my fellowprisoner saluteth you, and Marcus, sister's son to Barnabas,

His Consistency - Philemon - Paul's Restraint -

1 Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother,

His Request - 10 I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:

His Resolve - 22 But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.

His Respect - 23 There salute thee Epaphras, my fellowprisoner in Christ Jesus; 24 Marcus, Aristarchus, Demas, Lucas, my fellowlabourers.

His Regard - 25 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

Amen.

2. The Trail -

The Welcome - 3 And the next day we touched at Sidon.

And Julius courteously entreated Paul, and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself.

The Wind - 4 And when we had launched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.

The Way - 5 and when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia,

we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.

The Win - 6 And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy; and he put us therein.

3. The Trials

The Pace - 7 And when we had sailed slowly many days,

The Progress - and scarce were come over against Cnidus, the wind not suffering us, we sailed under Crete, over against Salmone;

The Pressure - 8 And, hardly passing it, came unto a place which is called The fair havens; nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea.

The Peril - 9 Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past,

(after the Day of Atonement.) (held late September or early October)

The Prophesy -

It's Timing - 9 Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past,

It's Teaching - Paul admonished them,

It's Testing - 10 And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship,

It's Telling - but also of our lives.

The Presumption - 11 Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.

The Proposition - 12 And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter; which is an haven of Crete, and lieth toward the south west and north west.
