Message Point: We must be on our guard so as to not fall.

Focus Passage: Matthew 26:69-75

Supplemental Passage: But Peter said to Him, "Even though all may fall away because of You, I will never fall away." Jesus said to him, "Truly I say to you that this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." Peter *said to Him, "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You." All the disciples said the same thing too. (Matthew 26:33-35)

Introduction: Relate a personal story of how your own pride or hard-headedness created a problem for you.

I. We are stubborn and heard-headed (vs 33-35)

a. Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before stumbling.

b. Isaiah 5:21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes And clever in their own sight!

c. Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, But a wise man is he who listens to counsel.

d. The Bible speaks volumes against pride but sums it up in I Cor 10:12

i. Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. 1 Corinthians 10:12

II. We think we are better than others (vs 33, 74-75)

a. Peter thought he was strong

b. He couldn’t live up to his own boasting

c. His perception was different than reality

III. We fail to acknowledge the weakness of our flesh (vs 41,75)

a. In essence, Peter acknowledged what the Lord said all along

b. Our flesh (intellect, knowledge, gumption, will, etc) is unfit to keep us

c. Luke 22:61 The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, "Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times."

Application/Invitation:

1 The closer we look to Jesus, the more He affects us

2 The more Jesus affects us the less we stray

3 The less we stray the less we make mistakes

4 The less we make mistakes, the less we repeat them.
