“Pentecost The Rest of the Story”
Pentecost is one of the busiest days in Jerusalem. people have come together from all over the ancient world to Jerusalem, the city of God. Speech differences are overcome
Have you ever been to a big yard sale? People are moving around looking for bargins often crowded. Just think of the joy your grandchild will have riding up and down the sidewalk on this spectacular trike. Fire-engine red. Tassels that dangle from the handles. And, listen to this, a little bell that sits on the handlebar. Again, a great bargain. I’m offering it at one-third the original price. With these savings you can take the entire family out to dinner! There is, however, the small matter of one missing wheel. But the trike still has two. Little Johnny will eventually need to ride a two-wheeler anyway. Might as well start him out right. Buy him this two-wheeled trike. Then add a third wheel. (Max Lucado God’s Promise)
Many believers settle for a two-thirds God. They rely on the Father and the Son but overlook the Holy Spirit. The Bible refers more than a hundred times to the Holy Spirit. In Genesis the Spirit moved over the face of the waters. The Hebrew word for Spirit is Ruah =”breath” Then when God created Adam from the dust of the earth He “breathes into His creation of mud..and Adam became a living Spirit made in the image of God. The holy Spirit is the necessary third wheel.
In the New Testament Jesus says more about the Holy Spirit than He does about the church or marriage. In fact, on the eve of His death, as He prepared His followers to face the future without Him, He made this great and precious promise: I will be with you only a little while longer, you will grieve but your grief will turn to joy.
The Jesus they saw with their eyes, touched with their hands and heard with their ears would on the day of Pentecost take up residence in their hearts, bodies and mind. Leonard Sweet Jesus a Theography)p.275
After spending 40 days with the disciples after his resurrection, He ascended back to the glories of heaven from which He had come. (John17:5)
On Pentecost God “breaths” His Spirit, the Same Spirit that resided in Jesus into the 11 disciples in Jerusalem.
The church, the new living body of Jesus was created.
Ever since the 2nd century we confess “I believe in the Holy Spirit and the Christian Church. You can not separate the Spirit from the Church. The church is the continued presence of Jesus. The Apostle Pul remind us That this same Spirit that lives in each Christian is the same who raised Jesus from the dead and will also raise each believer. (Romans 8:11)
ON the night of the Passover Jesus said: When the Counselor, my Spirit comes He will teach you all things. He will convict the world of sin and judgment. Just as the Spirit gave me the Father’s words so He will speak not on his own but what He hears from the Father. (John 16:5-13)
How does that work? A journey through the Book of Acts.
Acts 2 After Pentecost the new body of believers met for prayer reviewed the teachings of Jesus, shared the Lord’s Supper.
Acts 4 Peter and John are going up to the temple to pray. On the way there acrippled man on the steps was begging for money. Peter said: Silver and Gold I do not have. Taking the man by his hand Peter said “but what I have I give you in the name of Jesus. Immediately his feet and legs became strong he jumped up and when into the temple leaping and praising God. The Spirit told Peter what to do.
They were then arrested and brought before the Jewish High court the Sanhedrin. Luke writes: And Peter filled with the Holy Spirit said “This man was healed by the power in the name of Jesus of Nazareth whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead.
Acts 5 Ananias and Sapphira. Tell the story. When they brought their offering pretending they gave the full amount Peter said: Ananias you have lied to the Holy Spirit, the invisible presence of Jesus.
ACTS One of my favorite stories so I’m sure you’ve heard this before. The Spirit said to Philip “Go down the road from Jerusalem to Gaza. I notice the Spirit didn’t tell him why. I don’t know how far or how long he walked but eventually the Spirit said “Go stand near that Chariot.” The e=rest is normal conversation. Philip hear the man reading a passage from Isaiah and he asked a Question “do you understand what you are reading” Philip explained the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. He was baptized.
