Summary: The sermon describes what provoked Pentecost and the purpose of Pentecost which is to fill us, prepare us, and to pour out on us.
Pentecost Acts 2:1-21
When is Pentecost?
A. Pentecost is the 50th day after the Sabbath of Passover week (Lev 23:15-16),
What is Pentecost?
A. The word derives from the Greek for "the 50th day." It was the Jewish Feast of Weeks (Exod 34:22; Deut 16:9-11), variously
called the Feast of Harvest (Exod 23:16) or the Day of First fruits (Num 28:26), which fell on the 50th day after
the Feast of the Passover. It is also the birth of the church.
Where is Pentecost?
Where the God fearers are
5Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.
1. What Provoked or triggered Pentecost? UNITY
A. People of Faith came together, vs 1 "they were all together in one place." half can't be here but the whole
note vs 3 They saw, vs 4 all of them were filled, vs 6when they heard the sound, they had to mcuh wine,
vs 5 they were staying in Jerusalem
B. The Psalmist claims it is good to have unity
Psalm 133:1How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!
C. Paul tells the church to live in harmony live as family
Romans 12:16Live in harmony with one another
Romans 15:5May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow
Christ Jesus, 6so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 cor 1:10I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there
may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in mind and thought
2. What is the Purpose of Pentecost? To fill us to be what He wants us to be
Acts 1:. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in
all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
3. The Purpose of Pentecost is to Prepare for the Last Days 17" `In the last days, God says,
Isaiah says 13:6Wail, for the day of the LORD is near; it will come like destruction from the Almighty.A
7Because of this, all hands will go limp, every man's heart will melt. 8Terror will seize them, pain
and anguish will grip them; they will writhe like a woman in labor.
Ezekiel says, 30:3For the day is near, the day of the LORD is near-- a day of clouds, a time of doom for the nations.
Joel says3:14Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the LORD is near
in the valley of decision. 15The sun and moon will be darkened, and the stars no longer shine.
4. Pentecost is also a time of shouting because God has poured Out on us
I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams
Jesus poured out His blood, the Pentecost I experience is Grace.
1 Timothy 1:14The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
Jesus poured out his blood, the Pentecost is I am forgiven
Jesus poured out his blood, the Pentecost is I become a new creature
Jesus poured out his blood, my Pentecost is I am reconciled,
Romans 5:10we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son
Jesus poured out His blood, My Pentecost is My name is written in the Lambs Book of Life
