PSALM 46 "PEACE IN THE STORM "

The psalmist rests assured that God's people are safe and secure under God's mighty protection.

I. THE PROTECTION FROM GOD (1-3): God is our refuge and strength The psalmist finds security and peace in knowing that

God watches over his people.

A. Its availability (46:1): God is always ready to be our refuge.

B. Its dependability (46:2-3): We should not fear, since God is with us through all circumstances.

1. Though the world is destroyed (46:2)

2. Though the oceans roar (46:2-3)

C. Its suitability It is said of Martin Luther, when some disheartening news or discouraging word came to him, he would respond by saying, "come let us sing the 46th Psalm. 1. THERE'S A REFUGE FOR THE SAINT. V 1 ,

2. A REST IN STRIFE. V 2 Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed,

3. A RIVER OF SALVATION. V 4 There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God,

II. THE PARADISE OF GOD (4-5):There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, The psalmist describes the perfect tranquility of the city of God.

A. His Provision Its river brings joy (4).

B. His Presence It is God's home (5).God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved:

C. His Permanence It is eternal (5): The city cannot be destroyed.God shall help her, and that right early.

Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

III. THE POWER OF GOD (6-8):6 The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.

(a) THE RAGING OF THE HEATHEN. V 6

(b) THE REST OF THE HOLY 7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

(c) THE REVELATION OF THE HOPE 8 Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth.

A. We behold the mighty works of God.

B. We believe in the protection of God.

God brings destruction on the world.

IV. THE PEACE OF GOD (9): He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.

He will someday end wars throughout the earth.

(a) Wars Ended Universally He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth

(b) Wars Ended Unilaterally he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder;

(c) Wars Ended Unendingly he burneth the chariot in the fire.

V. THE PRAISE TO GOD (10-11): Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. 11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

A. God is seen in the quiet time. Be still, and know that I am God:

B. God will be seen in due time. I will be exalted among the heathen,

C. God should be seen at all time 11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

1 Peter 3:16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.
