Summary: Paul is departing and he leaves a message for Timothy.

Passing the Mantel 2 Timothy 1:1-14

1. Paul is passing the mantle to Timothy

• He writes To Timothy, my beloved child: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

• He writes I am grateful to God

• He writes I remember you constantly in my prayers night and day.

• He writes rekindle the gift of God that is within you

• He writes Guard the gospel entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us.

2. While Paul his end days are near so he is passing the mantle down to Timothy

• Paul’s second letter to Timothy is deeply personal. It’s written from a prison cell,

• His letter is filled with hope, His letter is filled with conviction,

• His letter is filled with spiritual fire.

• Paul is passing the torch—reminding Timothy of the faith that shaped him, the gift that empowers him, and the gospel that calls him to endure.

3. Paul is passing the mantle because he is free he fought the good fight

• I worship with a clear conscience,

• Paul begins with gratitude. Even in chains, his spirit is free.

• Pauls worship is sincere, and his prayers are constant.

• He remembers Timothy—not just as a disciple, but as a spiritual son “I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that lived first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and I am sure, lives in you.”

4. Paul is Passing the mantle and he gives some advice

• “For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands.”

• Paul urges Timothy to rekindle or stir up the flame.

• Don’t neglect The gift of God—whether it’s preaching, teaching, leading.Paul writes “For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.”

• Timothy may have been timid, but Paul reminds him: fear is not from God.

• The Spirit within us is bold, loving, and disciplined. It’s not reckless it’s divine empowerment.

• What gift has God placed in us? Has it grown cold? It’s time to rekindle it— with holy fire.

5. Paul is passing the mantle to Timothy and warning him

• Paul warns him “Do not be ashamed, then, of the testimony about our Lord or of me his prisoner…”

• Paul challenges Timothy to embrace the gospel fully—even when it leads to suffering.

• The gospel isn’t just good news; it’s costly news. It demands courage. Paul writes “…but join with me in suffering for the gospel, in the power of God…”

• God empowers us to endure, Are we willing to suffer for the gospel? Are we unashamed of Christ? Are we willing to pay the price

6. Paul passes the mantle of the gospel to Timothy he tells him

• He tells Timothy to Guard the Gospel He tells Timothy to teach it

• He tells Timothy to live it He tells Timothy to believe it

• He Tells Timothy to love it He tells Timothy to pass it on

“Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.”“Guard the good deposit entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us.”

7. Paul passes the Mantle sharing you need a faith that endures.

• Paul’s words to Timothy are a call to courage, conviction, and continuity.

• Faith is not stationary it is active —

• Faith is rekindled, tested, and guarded. And through it all, the Spirit empowers us.

I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
