Summary: Paul the Apostle begins his letter not with problems, but with praise. Before speaking about Christian duty, he reminds believers of their Christian riches. Many believers live defeated lives because they forget how blessed they already are in Christ.

1. The Gift of Grace and Peace (v.2)

“Grace to you and peace…”

Grace is God’s unmerited favor. Grace starts right from our salvation. Without His Grace we would not even survive. Grace should not be taken as a license to do anything we want.

Peace is the result of receiving grace.

Grace deals with our sin; peace deals with our condition.

True peace comes only from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. You cannot have peace without grace. When we understand God’s grace, our hearts rest in His peace. He is the Jehovah Shalom, the Prince of Peace. The Bible talks about Peace that passeth all understanding.

2. The Source of Every Blessing (v.3)

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ…”

We bless God because He first blessed us.

God is both Father in terms of relationship and our Lord in terms of authority.

Our blessings flow from a personal relationship with Him. It is Him alone and none else. He is the only source of all resources. Every little thing that we have and enjoy comes from Him.

Instead of focusing on what we lack, we should learn to praise the Source of our blessings.

3. The Richness of Our Spiritual Blessings (v.3)

“…who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.”

Every spiritual blessing. It covers all. There is nothing missing.

Spiritual blessings are eternal, not temporary.

They are found in Christ alone. Apart from Him there is no blessing.

Our position is in “heavenly places” symbolises that we belong to a higher kingdom. He has seated us in the heavenly realms. We need to understand our position. We need to recognise our identity. The Bible declares that Righteousness, Peace, Joy in the Holy Ghost determines the Kingdom of God. They are to be understood first. If we do not know their potential then we cannot understand the content of the power.
