Twinkies and Root Beer
A little boy wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with Twinkies and a six-pack of Root Beer and he started his journey. When he had gone about three blocks, he met an elderly man. The man was sitting in the park just feeding some pigeons. The boy sat down next to him and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his root beer when he noticed that the man looked hungry, so he offered him a Twinkie. The man gratefully accepted it and smiled at boy. His smile was so pleasant that the boy wanted to see it again, so he offered him a root beer. Again, the man smiled at him. The boy was delighted! They sat there all afternoon eating and smiling, but they never said a word. As it grew dark, the boy realized how tired he was and he got up to leave, but before he had gone more than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the man, and gave him a hug. The man gave him his biggest smile ever. When the boy opened the door to his own house a short time later, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked him, "What did you do today that made you so happy?”He replied, "I had lunch with God." But before his mother could respond, he added, "You know what? God’s got the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen!" Meanwhile, the elderly man, also radiant with joy, returned to his home. His son was stunned by the look of peace on his face and he asked," Dad, what did you do today that made you so happy?" He replied, "I ate Twinkies in the park with God." However, before his son responded, he added," You know, he’s much younger than I expected." Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Embrace all equally! Author unknown
1 Peter 1:6-12 Our greatest weapon is the Word of God
We are in a world that has tried to say that the word of God is not true and because it has thrown out the Bible in many areas of our lives there is no morality. Without God and His word, what do we have to make us do the right in our lives? How many times have we seen evil triumph over good because it was man who decided what should be done? O. J. Simpson, Kennedy assassination, Clinton lies, anti-abortion- pro-choice, choice of life style, creation vs. evolution in Maryland. To win a war one needs to have superior weapons to defeat what the enemy throws at us. In the Gulf war, Saddam Hussein fired a total of 86 Scud missiles but these blown out of the sky by our Patriot missiles. Critics of the Patriot missiles said they would not work but in the heat of t he battle they showed they could defeat the enemy. You may remember that as the Desert Strom. Right after Jesus was baptized, He encountered the first Desert storm war. 2 Cor. 10:4 “We use God’s mighty weapons, not mere worldly weapons, to knock down the Devil’s strongholds.” IS 54:17 “No weapon that has been made to be used against you will succeed? You will have an answer for anyone who accuses you. This is the inheritance of the Lord’s servants. Their victory comes from me," declares the Lord.”
When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, He did not use philosophy or human reasoning but said, “It is written.” In our scripture reading today, it says that our faith is being tried with fire to make it pure. I want us to look at what Jesus believed about the Word of God that it might increase our faith in this book. We will look at the four Gospels to see what Jesus believed about the Word of God. JN 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
1. Jesus believed that the Bible was God’s Word. He believed in the inspiration of the Word of God. He knew that God used human writers as instruments to record what should be said. God was the true author. He said in MT 4:4 “every word proceeds out of the mouth of God.” This is not a book written by men with their wisdom. MK 7:13 Because of your traditions you have destroyed the authority of God’s word. And you do many other things like that." JN 10:35 “The Scriptures cannot be discredited.” Jesus said that what David wrote in the Psalms was inspired by the Holy Spirit. Paul said 2 Tim. 3:16 “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right.” Inspired means the breath of God. 1 Thes. 2:13 “And we will never stop thanking God that when we preached his message to you, you didn’t think of the words we spoke as being just our own. You accepted what we said as the very word of God, which, of course, it was. And this word continues to work in you who believe.” 2 PT 1:21 “No prophecy ever originated from humans. Instead, it was given by the Holy Spirit as humans spoke under God’s direction.” All that we have in this book was given to us by the Holy Spirit.
