INTRODUCTION
Spiritual sight is one of the greatest blessings a believer can receive. Many people walk through life with physical sight but lack spiritual understanding. In Psalm 119:18, the psalmist cries out, “Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of Your law.” This shows that divine revelation is necessary for us to fully grasp God's truth.
Just as physical blindness prevents a person from seeing the world around them, spiritual blindness hinders people from perceiving God’s will, His promises, and His divine plan. Without the opening of our spiritual eyes, we may live below our potential, struggle with confusion, and miss the supernatural realities God has prepared for us.
This sermon will analyze the need for spiritual sight, the obstacles that hinder it, and how we can receive divine enlightenment.
1. THE NEED FOR SPIRITUAL EYES TO BE OPENED
a) To understand God’s Word (Psalm 119:18)
Without divine revelation, the Scriptures remain a mystery to many.
b) To see God’s divine protection (2 Kings 6:17)
Elisha’s servant was fearful until his eyes were opened to see the chariots of fire surrounding them.
c) To recognise Jesus in our lives (Luke 24:31)
The disciples on the road to Emmaus walked with Jesus but did not recognise Him until their eyes were opened.
d) To walk in God’s purpose (Ephesians 1:17-18)
Paul prayed that the eyes of believers be enlightened to understand their calling.
e) Biblical Example: Paul’s Conversion (Acts 9:3-18)
Paul was physically blinded but received his sight along with spiritual revelation after his encounter with Jesus.
2. OBSTACLES TO SPIRITUAL SIGHT
a) Sin and disobedience (Isaiah 59:2)
Sin separates us from God and blinds us from seeing His truth.
b) Spiritual laziness (Proverbs 25:2)
God hides deep revelations for those who seek Him diligently.
c) Pride and self-reliance (Revelation 3:17-18)
The Laodicean church thought they were rich but were spiritually blind.
d) The influence of the enemy (2 Corinthians 4:4)
Satan blinds the minds of unbelievers so they cannot see the light of the gospel.
e) Biblical Example: The Pharisees' Spiritual Blindness (John 9:39-41)
Despite witnessing Jesus’ miracles, they remained blind to the truth because of their hardened hearts.
3. HOW TO RECEIVE SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT
a) Prayer for divine revelation (Jeremiah 33:3)
When we ask God for wisdom and understanding, He grants it.
b) Studying and meditating on God’s Word (Psalm 119:105)
The Bible is a lamp that brings light to our path.
c) Walking by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7)
Spiritual sight requires trusting God beyond what is physically visible.
d) Being filled with the Holy Spirit (John 16:13)
The Holy Spirit guides us into all truth and reveals hidden mysteries.
e) Biblical Example: Bartimaeus’ Cry for Sight (Mark 10:46-52)
Blind Bartimaeus persistently called on Jesus, and his sight was restored.
CONCLUSION
The cry, “Open my eyes, Lord!” should be the daily prayer of every believer. Without spiritual sight, we may live in confusion, fear, and ignorance of God’s plans. But when our eyes are opened, we gain revelation, direction, and a deeper relationship with God.
God is willing to reveal Himself to those who seek Him. Like Elisha’s servant, the disciples at Emmaus, and Paul, our lives can be transformed when our spiritual eyes are enlightened. May the Lord open our eyes to behold His glory and walk in His divine purpose!
