Summary: Part 1 of a 2 part series on the Death and Burial of Jesus. By integrating the gospels, we can easily see all of the details provided in all four gospels. This message is the crucifixion story in a logical order with nothing added to Scripture and nothing taken away.

Luke 23:26-34

As the chief priests led Jesus away to be crucified, they laid hold of Simon the Cyrenain. Simon, (the father of Alexander and Rufus - Mark 15:21), was coming out of the country. They laid the cross on him, so that he could carry it behind Jesus.

A great company of people and women followed Jesus. The women bewailed and lamented him.

Jesus (turned to the women): Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children, the days are coming, when they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the breasts which never gave suck. Then they will begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us, because if they do these things in a green tree, what will be done in the dry?

Two others, both criminals, were also led with Jesus to be put to death.

When they arrived at the place, which is called Calvary (the place of the skull, which

is called in the Hebrew Golgotha - John 19:17), they crucified him there. They crucified the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left (and Jesus in the middle - John 19:18). And it was 9 AM - MARK 15:22). (And the scripture was fulfilled, which says, And he was numbered with the transgressors. - Mark 15:28)

They gave him wine mingled with myrrh to drink: but he did not accept it. - Mark 15:23)

Jesus: Father, forgive them; because they don’t know what they are doing.

John 19:19-24

Pilate wrote a title and put it (over Jesus - Luke 23:38) on the cross.

The writing was, (THIS IS - Matthew 27:37) JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. (And the superscription was written in letters of Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Luke 23:28)

Then many of the Jews read this title, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near to the city:

The chief priests of the Jews (to Pilate): Do not write “The King of the Jews;” but that “He said, I am King of the Jews.”

Pilate: What I have written, I have written.

When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and made four parts, a part for each soldier, and also his coat:

The coat had no seam; it was woven from the top to the bottom.

The soldiers (among themselves): The coat has no seam; therefore, Let’s not tear it, instead let’s cast lots for it to determine whose it will be.

This fulfilled the scripture, which says, They parted my garments among them, and

for my robe they cast lots. - Psalm 22:18

Therefore, the soldiers did these things. (And sitting down they watched him there. - Matthew 27:36)

Mark 15:29-31

Those who passed by railed on him, shaking their heads.

Those who passed by: Ah, you who destroyed the temple, and built it in three days, save yourself. And (if you are the Son of God, - Matthew 27:40) come down from the cross.

(And the people stood watching. Luke 23:35)

Likewise the chief priests also mocked.

The chief priests [among themselves with the scribes (and elders - Matthew 27:41)]: He saved others, but he cannot save himself. (Let him save himself, if he is Christ, the chosen of God, Luke 23:35, the King of Israel - Matthew 27:42) Let Christ the King of Israel descend from the cross now, that we may see and believe. (He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. Matthew 27:43)

John 19:25-27

His mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene stood by the cross of Jesus.

Therefore, Jesus saw his mother and also the disciple John, whom he loved, standing by.

Jesus (to his mother): Woman, behold your son!

Jesus (to John his disciple): Behold your mother!

And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.

Luke 23:36-37, 39-43

The soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar.

The soldiers: If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.

One of the criminals hanging on a cross railed on him.

First criminal: If you are Christ, save yourself and us.

The second criminal rebuked him.

The second criminal (to the first) : Don’t you fear God, seeing you are in the same condemnation? And we are indeed justly condemned; because we receive the punishment due for our crimes: but this man has done nothing wrong.

The second criminal (to Jesus): Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

Jesus (to the second criminal): Truly, today you will be with me in paradise.

Matthew 27:45-49

From 12pm there was darkness over all the land until the 3 o’clock hour.
