Explores how our trust in God is reflected in our words, honesty, and integrity, emphasizing the importance of these values in our daily lives.
Good morning, church family! It's so good to see all of your bright and shining faces today. We're going to be getting into a really important topic today, one that I believe will touch our hearts and challenge our daily walk. We're going to talk about the words we use, the honesty we carry, and the integrity we live with.
I recently came across a quote from Curtis Vaughan that I think sets the stage for our discussion today. He once wrote, "One’s mere word should be as trustworthy as a signed agreement attested by legal witnesses." Isn't that powerful? This is exactly what we’re going to be talking about today.
Our words, our honesty, and our integrity are all reflections of our trust in God.
In the book of Matthew, Jesus gives us a clear directive about the words we use. He tells us to simply say 'Yes' or 'No'. This is a profound teaching. It's about more than just avoiding lies or keeping promises. It's about the power that our words hold.
Our words: They have the ability to create and to destroy. They can build up or tear down. They can encourage or discourage. They can bring life or they can bring death. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 18:21 that "death and life are in the power of the tongue." This is a powerful truth that we need to grasp.
More than just communicating information: When we speak we are shaping reality. We are influencing the people around us. We are impacting the world. This is why Jesus emphasizes the importance of our words. He knows the power they hold.
Not just about the words we speak: It's also about the words we don't speak. Silence can be just as powerful as speech. When we choose not to speak, we are making a statement. We are saying that we don't care enough to speak up. Or that we are afraid of the consequences of speaking out. This is why Jesus tells us to simply say 'Yes' or 'No'. He wants us to be people who speak the truth, even when it's hard.
Recognizing the impact of our words: Every word we speak has the potential to affect others. We need to be mindful of this. We need to think before we speak. We need to consider the potential impact of our words.
