No Sin Greater Than God's Grace

Summary: This message of this sermon is this: No one is beyond the reach of God's grace.
Introduction
A young man once came to me after a church service. His eyes were filled with tears as he asked, “Pastor, can God really forgive me? You don’t know what I’ve done. My sins are too big. I don’t think God’s grace can reach me.”
That question is not new. Many people carry a heavy burden of guilt, believing their sins are too shameful, too many, too dark to be forgiven.
But I told that young man what I want to tell you today: There is no sin greater than the grace of God.
The Apostle Paul writes in Romans 5:20, “But where sin increased, grace increased all the more.” That is the heart of the gospel.
1. God’s Grace Is Greater Than Our Sin
Let us look at the lives of people in the Bible.
David, a man after God’s own heart, fell into adultery and even arranged the death of an innocent man. Yet when he humbled himself and cried, “Have mercy on me, O God” (Psalm 51), the Lord forgave him and restored him.
Peter, one of Jesus’ closest disciples, denied Him three times on the night of His trial. Imagine the shame of betraying your best friend in His hour of need.
But after the resurrection, Jesus did not cast Peter aside. Instead, He asked, “Do you love me?” and commissioned him to feed His sheep.
Paul, once known as Saul, was a violent persecutor of Christians. He dragged believers out of their homes and approved of their deaths.
Jesus, however, met him on the road to Damascus, turned his life around, and made him the greatest missionary of the early church.
These stories remind us that no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace. If He forgave murderers, traitors, and persecutors, then He can forgive you and me.
Think of the ocean. If you throw a stone, it sinks. If you throw a mountain, it still sinks. God’s grace is like an ocean — vast, deep, immeasurable. Whether your sin feels like a pebble or a mountain, His grace can cover it all.
2. The Sin That Cannot Be Forgiven
But then we come to a sobering warning from Jesus. In Matthew 12:31 He says, “Every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.”
What does that mean?
It is not simply saying a wrong word in anger. It is not doubting. It is not failing in weakness. No — blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is the willful, hardened, lifelong rejection of the Spirit’s work of pointing us to Christ.
The Spirit convicts us of sin, whispers to our hearts, and shows us the way to forgiveness through Jesus.
But if we keep saying, “No, I don’t want You, I don’t need Your mercy, I will not repent,” then we shut the very door of forgiveness.
Imagine a drowning man in the ocean. A lifeboat comes, the rescuers throw him a rope, and shout, “Grab hold, and we will save you!” But the man, in his pride, says, “No, I don’t need your help.” If he keeps refusing, he drowns — not because the rescuers lacked the power to save, but because he rejected their help.
In the same way, the only sin that cannot be forgiven is the sin of rejecting the only Savior who can forgive.
3. The Good News of God’s Invitation
Here is the good news, beloved: if you are worried that you might have committed the unforgivable sin, that’s proof that you haven’t. Why? Because your very concern shows that the Spirit is still speaking to your heart.
The unforgivable sin is not a one-time mistake, but a lifetime of hardened resistance to God’s grace. And if today you feel His tug on your heart, that means the door of mercy is still open.
Jesus says in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
So come. Lay your burdens down. Your guilt, your shame, your failures — He already bore them on the cross.
Conclusion
So let us never believe the lie that our sins are bigger than God’s mercy. The cross of Jesus Christ stands as eternal proof: His grace is greater.
But let us also not harden our hearts. The only danger is rejecting Him until it’s too late.
Friend, don’t delay. Don’t gamble with eternity. The Spirit of God is calling you now. Run into His arms, for His mercy is greater than your past, greater than your guilt, greater than your sin.
Let us pray.
Lord, we thank You for the immeasurable grace we have in Christ. We confess that our sins are many, but Your mercy is more. Forgive us for the times we doubted Your love. Today, we open our hearts to You anew. For anyone here who feels unworthy, remind them that the cross is proof of their worth in Your eyes. For anyone who has been resisting Your Spirit, soften their hearts and draw them close. May we live each day not in guilt but in gratitude, for we are redeemed by Your blood. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
