INTRODUCTION:
Strife and conflict are some of the greatest threats to peace and progress in the lives of believers and the church. Even among the closest relationships, disagreements can arise that, if left unchecked, can lead to bitterness, division, and loss. The story of Abram and Lot teaches us the wisdom of resolving conflicts before they escalate and the importance of making room for peace in our hearts and communities.
In Genesis 13, the increasing wealth of Abram and Lot led to tension between their herdsmen. Instead of allowing strife to grow, Abram took the initiative to separate and offer Lot the first choice of land, prioritising peace over personal gain. This teaches us that avoiding strife requires humility, sacrifice, and a heart committed to unity rather than selfish ambition.
Today’s message challenges us to identify and eliminate the sources of strife in our lives and relationships. It is a call to be peacemakers who choose reconciliation over conflict and who build environments where God’s peace can reign fully.
1. RECOGNISE THE DANGER OF STRIFE
a) Strife causes division (Genesis 13:7):
The quarrel between Abram’s and Lot’s herdsmen threatened their unity.
b) Strife hinders progress (Proverbs 17:14):
Once a quarrel begins, it can escalate quickly unless addressed.
c) Strife is often rooted in selfishness (James 4:1):
Desires and covetousness fuel conflicts among people.
d) Strife grieves the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:31):
It brings bitterness and anger, which God hates.
Biblical Example: Cain’s jealousy led to murder, showing the destructive power of unresolved strife (Genesis 4:3-8).
2. TAKE INITIATIVE TO MAKE PEACE
a) Abram’s example of humility (Genesis 13:8-9):
Abram chose to let Lot decide first to avoid conflict.
b) Peace requires selflessness (Romans 12:18):
Do all you can to live peaceably with everyone.
c) Forgiveness is key to peace (Ephesians 4:32):
Forgiving others removes barriers to harmony.
d) Actively pursue reconciliation (Matthew 5:9):
Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called children of God.
Biblical Example: Joseph forgave his brothers, restoring family peace (Genesis 45:1-15).
3. CHOOSE WISELY TO AVOID FUTURE STRIFE
a) Lot’s choice of land had consequences (Genesis 13:10-12):
His decision brought him near conflict zones later.
b) Consider long-term peace over short-term gain (Proverbs 3:5-6):
Trust God’s guidance when making decisions.
c) Avoid places or situations prone to conflict (1 Corinthians 15:33):
Bad company corrupts good morals.
d) Walk in God’s wisdom daily (James 3:17):
Wisdom from above is peace-loving and considerate.
Biblical Example: Solomon asked God for wisdom to lead his people in peace (1 Kings 3:9-12).
4. MAINTAIN A HEART FREE FROM STRIFE
a) Guard your heart against bitterness (Hebrews 12:15):
Bitterness causes trouble and defiles many.
b) Cultivate patience and gentleness (Galatians 5:22-23):
Fruits of the Spirit help maintain peace.
c) Speak words that build up, not tear down (Ephesians 4:29):
Your words can either promote peace or strife.
d) Pray for a spirit of peace and unity (Philippians 4:6-7):
God’s peace will guard your heart and mind.
Biblical Example: Moses interceded to stop the Israelites from fighting, showing a heart of peace (Exodus 32:30-32).
5. EXPERIENCE THE BLESSING OF PEACE
a) Peace brings joy and rest (Psalm 29:11):
God blesses those who live in peace.
b) Peace is a sign of God’s favour (Romans 5:1):
Justified by faith, we have peace with God.
c) Peace enables effective witness (Colossians 3:15):
Let the peace of Christ rule in your heart.
d) Peace is a fruit of revival and blessing (Isaiah 57:19):
God speaks peace to His people when revival comes.
Biblical Example: The early church enjoyed unity and peace, resulting in growth (Acts 2:42-47).
CONCLUSION:
Strife is a dangerous enemy that can destroy relationships, hinder progress, and grieve God’s Spirit. Yet, as Abram showed us, we have the power to choose peace by acting in humility, selflessness, and wisdom. God calls His people to be peacemakers who build bridges, not walls.
Let us commit today to eliminate strife from our hearts and communities. By embracing God’s peace, forgiving others, and seeking wise choices, we position ourselves to experience His abundant blessing and favour. Remember, in every situation, there is no room for strife where God’s peace reigns.
